Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

I want there to be a scene in Infinity War where Tony sees some space tech and starts geeking out about it to Quill thinking he made it, then Quill motioning to Rocket and Tony realizing that a raccoon is the engineering genius of the group.

"Rocket Raccoon was able to build this in a cave.....with a box of scraps?!"

"Just like you in Iron Man 1, mofo!"

I wanna see Rocket meet a racoon just for his reaction.

Im quite happy to live in mexico. I wanna say that we saw it a week early than US so I guess thats one good thing. Also the movie is good, but the golden race sucked bad. The only purpose was to build adam warlock so...

Yeah, this improper usage of that term is the fucking worst thing.

Girl I was with started calling me daddy and it was the biggest damn turnoff.
Hey, daddy means something else now. We ruin everything
Apparently, Michael Rosenbaum was in the film too. He was the Martinex, the ice dude that was with Stallone's character.
Yep, I just want more Rosenbaum. Wish the Wonderman stuff wasn't cut

Hahaha.

This has me thinking though, who's handling the writing and could that potentially be a concern or do we trust everyone involved can keep them in line with their mainline selves?
Same writers as WS and CW. And Gunn is a producer on the next Avengers movies.

Being a casual, I didn't know Yondu was gonna die and I was upset because I really liked Michael Rooker in that role :(

I enjoyed the movie way more than the first one, I felt like the humor was a bit forced but I liked the whole Father/Son storyline they had going for them here also Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone still got it, holy shit.

I can't get over how goddamn adorable Baby Groot was

And that damn Cat Stevens song got me all misty eyed thinking about my relationship with my father.

Damn good movie.

The part I laughed the hardest, brought to tears and cheek cramps trying to contain it so I didn't seem like a crazy person and so I, and the people around me, could hear whatever came next:

*giant boulder hits Mantis*

Drax: "Mantis, look out!"

...in my defense, I was just recovering from the Mary Poppins line.

From the earlier post The Watchers apparently are a big deal. Are they considered good or bad? Also, are they stronger than Thanos and Galactus, which I believe both are considered the strongest Marvel villains?

Yeah. Probably a Zune 4gb or something.

More rare than an Infinity Stone.

I can't decide which is more strange. A Zune appearing in anything in 2017 or Sylvester Stallone playing The One Who Knows (sort of).

I was glad to see short interview with Gunn saying he's going to push Disney to release a 4k Blu-ray of the movie alongside the Blu-ray and digital releases. This movie looked unbelievable.

The Mary Poppins line is a work of magic. I was laughing so hard.

Saw this movie on Friday night with friends and thoroughly enjoyed it, though I admit I liked Vol. 2 more. Much more personable and dug the family theme.

That said, myself, my friends and the entire theater completely lost it with the Mary Poppins line. Coupled with seeing the promo art again after seeing the movie - the hint was there since the beginning.

Off tangent, I'm looking forward to the new Mary Poppins film coming.

Just came back from seeing it, absolutely adored this movie. Liked it better than the first. Ego was amazing, probably my favorite Marvel movie villain so far (which I guess isn't a very high hurdle to cross). My only disappointment was that Mantis didn't get to do a whole lot.

A race of beings that collects knowledge from the universe. They are extremely dangerous, but cannot lift a finger to help people because they are they to observe and record.

Are they considered good or bad?

They are neutral. They observe and record events of great importance but swear an oath of non interference.

Also, are they stronger than Thanos and Galactus, which I believe both are considered the strongest Marvel villains?

No, Watchers are strong but nowhere near either of those.

EDIT: Actually I think they can hang with vanilla Thanos, but not Galactus.

One of the Watchers "hosted" a comic called What If...? that showed a different alternate universe story every issue. It was actually a great vehicle for me to learn about the history of the Marvel Universe as a kid.

The Mary Poppins line is even better because Peter means it as a bit of an insult, but walks it back when Yondu asks if that means he looks cool

Two things, Big props to Gunn for not going the Star Wars/Trek route with his FTL travel. The invisible grid thing looked great.

2. Gunn is the best thing to happen to Ego since Kirby. Every fucking time he shows up in comics Ego gets a new dumb origin.
EDIT: It's happening again in Ultimates 2 apparently. Hope Ewing doesn't screw up.

Honestly, I loved every other part of their subplot, but that scene really bugged me. I thought it was way too hamfisted and probably didn't need to be spelled out in the text. Even after a second viewing (where most of my quibbles with the pacing evaporated) that scene still bugged me.

Personally, I think their subplot needed that scene. The way both characters are, they keep their emotions pretty hidden so if they didn't have that scene, it might have seemed to come out of nowhere at the end for some people to see Rocket being sad that Yondu decides to sacrifice himself and at the funeral when you pan out from Rocket's sad look. I think what did it for me was the scene in a cell because you can see how they are both kind of cautiously feeling each other out to see what the other's motive is. It was a pretty subtle scene because it's not an outwardly emotional scene at all, but the way they feel out the other person and their intentions under the veil of sarcasm and joking makes it interesting to see them build up respect for one another. Even the way Rocket asks about why Yondu didn't give Peter to Ego was because Rocket actually cares and was trying to find out what this guy's real motives were and Yondu gives him the "because he's skinny and can fit into small places" line that Rocket knew was bullshit, but he let's it go because he knew it was because he cared for him.

Honestly, Yondu and Rocket's dynamic was good the first time I saw it but it was soo much better the second time I saw it, because everyone has a sort of bittersweet moment mourning the loss of their friend but they all had gotten to grow a bit in their journey and had found a little bit of happiness connecting with others. Rocket is bawling on the inside because he realized he lost someone that really understood him, and at the end of the film, he's still that cranky dude that shuts everyone out and he still feels alone, standing by himself out in front of everyone while literally being surrounded by people who care about him, even though he's a jerk to them.

All that is not spelled out in the text, in fact, and I sort of missed it the first time because obviously they had that moment on the ship and Rocket is like "yeah, shit, I guess you are like me. Damn, I don't want to see you go now." but I didn't think about how much that must have resonated with Rocket. The whole "you are just like me" speech is a bit of a cliche, but it's been Rocket's arc through the first film and this one; he's a jerk to everyone and Groot was his only friend in the entire universe. Now he has other friends but even then he doesn't treat them great. The way he stuns Gamora when she wants to run out and save Quill was pretty selfish, even if he thinks it's in her best interest to keep her from dying as well. Rocket is such a tragic character, it's hard not to pity him even when he makes poor decisions. Everyone else in the Guardians has begun the healing process of their past traumas but I'm not sure Rocket is ready yet.

Going back to the scene you mentioned, I think that's why that had to be made explicit, not just for a cool scene between the two characters, but because Rocket needed someone who really understood him to yell at him to snap out of it, to tell him to stop pushing people away before it's too late. I think Yondu kind of needed it as well, like that was his moment of stepping up and being a dad to Quill.

Hopefully there's a scene where Rocket actually gets to see real earthling raccoons too. Still bummed the movies haven't explained his origin.

Yeah, that whole exchange becomes a touching moment in a pretty subtle way.

It really shows that James Gunn really knows what he's doing and isn't just throwing together jokes and cheap sentimentality as a way or manipulating the audience into feeling something. There is a real earnestness to the emotion in these films.

And Cliffhanger.

I love that movie because this guy behind Rooker is smiling and laughing like a motherfucker when that woman falls.
