PITTSBURGH, WHERE WHITE PEOPLE OPEN “90’S STYLE HIP-HOP FRIED CHICKEN” SPOTS IN THE GENTRIFIED HOOD

If this weren’t a real thing that was really actually happening, the concept of a 90’s style hip-hop fried chicken restaurant created by White people in the hood would make for a cute and clever Chappelle or Key & Peele skit.

Of course, White people seem intent on proving they’re able to create realities far more absurd and ridiculous than any fiction. Which is why East Liberty — which used to be a Black Pittsburgh cultural nexus but is rapidly morphing into Yinzer Williamsburg — will soon be home to “The Coop,” which promises to be an “urban, street style type of place” serving fast casual fried chicken, according to Adam Kucenic (the owner). It will sit next to Muddy Waters, an oyster bar created by the same owner. And on Muddy Waters’ other side will soon be another Kucenic creation: “The Big Kahuna” — a poke bowl restaurant with a distinctly Hawaiian feel.

they have a lot of tone deaf businesses like this where I am. the town went through a big tourist boom and is now real hot. it's funny cause the people that open these places think where they are is eclectic but it couldn't be further from the truth. there is an Ethiopian place opened where they took traditional dishes and did all sorts of shit to them that you would expect they would, walls covered in "traditional" art, serving craft beer to drink too lol. also all sorts of "african" art and "buddhist" trinket stores selling touristy stuff and not by people who belong to the cultures that are being appropriated....

Taking other people's culture and shaping it into a parody that you can call your own... Seems to be a tradition among many white people.

Where's all the "hip hop", "90's" and "hood" quotes from the owner?

I saw the owner say "urban" and "Street", but I can't find the other quotes.

This is one of the last things to give a fuck about and does not impact me in any way as a black person. Just another excuse for people to divide and point fingers and learn to hate as they convulse trying to find yet another thing to be offended about.

This looks exactly how I expected it to

every mid tier pub-style place with the exact same goddamn aesthetic.

look at those fries

What... are those double ended glass things.

Fried chicken looks good though not going to lie.

^^^ edit: yo what are those? beer bongs for wine. Looks like a long stem champagne glass for you to classily chug.

Baby you can't taste racism.
What I mean is hows the food taste?

Feel like he just wanted to generate some buzz and took the easy route. Shoulda went all in and called it "Project Chicken," got Lil Wayne

You still pretending to be black huh

Wow, not only is this Kucenic guy appropriating black culture with his "street" fried chicken but he has an "authentic" Hawaiian poke bowl restaurant appropriating Asian/PI culture right next door. Truly the American dream - where white men can make it in American by appropriating and exploiting minority cultures for profit.

Eh, here in Nashville the whole idea of Nashville Hot Chicken has blown up with hipsters and cool "aspiring country artists" regardless of its black roots. All sorts of hipster joints revolve around hot chicken and such. This seems like more of the same.

They've already agreed to change the concept. They couldn't call it "the coop" anyway - there's already a Pittsburgh-based food truck by that name.

A Whole Foods once planned to replace the former Penn Plaza apartments was seen as the ultimate symbol of gentrification pushing out long-time residents who could no longer afford to stay in the neighborhood. The company has since hit pause on the project.

this reminds me of a coworker who moved to west Oakland and said it needed a grocery store and more restaurants. bruh

Well, capitalism in effect.

If people like it, it will succeed
If they don't, it won't

Anyone should be free to start a business, regardless of race, if the product is good it doesn't matter.

Locals will vote with their wallets. Personally, good luck to them, starting a business is a huge endeavor and full of obstacles, even if you don't like the idea of something, you shouldn't wish ill will on these folks for trying to make money.

I ran a small business, and if I went bankrupt and had to close it down I'd hope there weren't people cheering it on.

They can feel free to start whatever business they like, but if they're in the business of cultural appropriation I'll be damned if I won't be rooting for them to fail.

Instead of cultural appropriation, maybe it's just some people seeing a business opportunity.

Not sure why the immediate thought is this business is built from the ground up to destroy black people culture. Especially when it seems that's the target demo.

Colonel Sanders, Popeye's and Church's Chicken all had White inventors/creators, and these are the foundation of where the nation wide proliferation and association with black (and all people) and fried chicken began, but there are no protests if a new Popeye's shows up.

The issue here is the context of doing it in a place that is being gentrified with the black people who live there being priced out. You're right that this isn't really the owner's fault, but it does make opening such a restaurant there fairly tone deaf.

Where is the line crossed? I'm a white guy. If I wanted to open a Mexican restaurant, with sombreros on the wall, Spanish music playing, maybe some Aztec stuff strewn about...am I just a restaurant owner who wants to sell some tacos, or a culturally-appropriating asshole who deserves to fail?
