Xbox E3 Conference 6/11 2pm PST

Classic GAF suggesting Platinum and From Software should make everything.

Anyway, Fable will probably come back eventually but developer will certainly be up in the air. Not many western devs with RPG chops out there. Maybe Obsidian?

Edit: You know what, how about Ninja Theory for Fable? They're surprisingly solid at world building and are capable of a very good action combat system.

Yeah the latter. I'll probably take Monday off anyway like you said, but it was fun to have your day kind of planned out by the conferences. Now it's just....Ubi and Sony?

Yeah. Sony's conference will probly be good, and Ubi might surprise us. I'm usually off Mondays and Tuesdays, so I actually had to ask for Sunday off. Plus side for me is I get a 3-day weekend! :D

I'm sure people will be negative as fuck over the lack of surprises but to be honest, while the titles won't be new we're going to be learning plenty of new info. We have a good idea of Sea of Thieves because of the closed Alpha and a whole bunch of dev videos but we have only seen some old tech demos for Crackdown destruction and we don't really know anything about State of Decay.

Exactly man. I'm plenty excited to finally see a proper gameplay demo of Crackdown. I hope they knock it out of the park with that one. And yep, State of Decay 2, bigger budget and new engine I believe? Should be good!

I don't want anything to leak, so I should start with staying away from GAF for a while. But it's become a habit to check here daily. :(

Thought it was wrong to leave good ol' Microsoft out so I made a bingo for their conference this year as well! Was definitely the hardest one to make which shows in the 5 different Scorpion predictions
(a Scorpdoku)
. If there are any that are 100% confirmed to not be happening then please say so I can change it.

Haha, not bad. The Scorpio Launch Games made me think... Will the Scorpio only launch with one new game? Say maybe- August: Shadow of War, September: Forza 7, October: State of Decay 2. Or what if they treat it like a whole new console launch, and release multiple games on launch? :D

Well as it shows I'm expecting those three to be Scorpio 'launch' titles. Microsoft seems to be pushing Scorpio as a much bigger launch than Sony did with PS4 Pro (did that even have a new first/second-party launch game?) so having what are very likely going to be three of their biggest 2017 games at launch will do well. They also seem like the best games to show off the graphical upgrades with.

No but i think its somewhat implied. I just dont see the scorpio version of D2 having anything mind-blowing compared to ps4 pro. I think Bungie will absolutely have parity for it. Even if Scorpio could do it, they wont because it implies an 'advantage' and sony definitely wont be happy about it.

When you have a marketing deal with a company, youre not going to out an extra effort on the other console. I dont see any advantage coming to scorpio other than the one that comes out of the box and Scorpio handles itself.

I doubt MS were particularly happy about Witcher 3/The Division/BF4/BF1/etc running better on the PS4 when they had a marketing agreement, but it happened anyway because of the power gap.

We'll see similar differences on Sony-marketed games hitting Pro/Scorpio, for the same reason.

Although I doubt we'll see any particularly dramatic differences from Destiny 2, if only because Destiny 2 seems rather unspectacular from a graphical standpoint in general (some clear upgrades from D1, and the excellent art direction still holds up great, but for a 30fps game in 2017 it's underwhelming at best).

But unless they're actually managing to run at full native 4k on the Pro, I'd still expect a resolution difference if nothing else (seems like 60fps is off the table due to how they've architected the game, sadly).

I wish they'd just reopen Lionhead. It was so shortsighted to shut them down. Just unbelievable.
So you want them to reopen in name? Because the actual employees are long on other studios

It's a mid gen refresh, there's no "launch games". Maybe there's a game like Forza they release day and date but 99% of their market already has Xbox Ones so that concept makes no sense

Ha pretty hilarious.

I'm hoping that MS will bundle the elite controller in with a limited edition day one edition Scorpio. Would definitely get me to pre order as soon as it's announced.

They spent years and millions of dollars on a F2P game that had no chance of making it's money back.

It was too late for Lionhead to turn it around, MS should have done something sooner then maybe we would have Fable 4 and their new IP.

Well I know that it's a refresh and not a new gen or whatever. I just worded it different I guess. I consider a game coming out the same day as new hardware to be a "launch game" :p. Also, I actually think the Scorpio is just as much for ppl without an Xbox, as it is for ppl with one. It'll be a great time to jump in for Xbox 360 BC, Game Pass, and better Multiplatform games. :)

Yup. I know people downplay the sales because of the PS4 Pro, but I think it's going to do monster business. While supplies last of course.

That does not make any sense given the pc version..

Ideally they would start anew with as many key figures as they could get to come back and just start incubating ideas for Fable 4. They had a ton of great ideas going by that Eurogamer article - Lionhead: The Inside Story
"However, we were also under pressure to be enormously profitable. To be clear, Fable 1, 2 and 3 were highly profitable, despite the somewhat protracted developments of Fable 1 and 2, but not being as profitable as one or two of Microsoft's other properties created a certain amount of tension."

It was in this context that a pitch for a Fable 4 game was rejected. John McCormack was the chief architect of the pitch. He wanted to switch to Unreal Engine 4 and move the series into the technological, industrial age, with tram cars and flying machines. "We wanted to hit the late Victorian proper far out Jules Verne shit," McCormack says.

In the first Fable, Bowerstone was a small town. In Fable 2 it was a big town. In Fable 3 it was a city. In McCormack's Fable 4, Bowerstone was London, vast and dense. Jack the Ripper would run the streets, a Balverine in disguise.

The game would lean heavily on British mythology. McCormack planned to take Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, give them a Fable twist and drop them in "this kind of weird fucked up London environment".

"And that was going to be Fable 4, and it would be darker and grittier. And because it was R-rated it would have the prostitutes and the humour. I was like, man, this is going to be fucking brilliant, and everybody was really into it."

If they focused on getting the right ideas in place before expanding, I don't see how they could go wrong on their end. it'd be entirely in the hands of the market, and I think a Fable game could do really well, they franchise has historically as far the mainline games go anyway.

They spent years and millions of dollars on a F2P game that had no chance of making it's money back.

It was too late for Lionhead to turn it around, MS should have done something sooner then maybe we would have Fable 4 and their new IP.

No doubt Lionhead fucked up on their end to no small degree, but I am sick and tired of giving Microsoft a pass every time something happens to their studios. Please read the article I linked above. I place more blame on Microsoft trying to force Lionhead into F2P than on Lionhead for fucking it up - not that I necessarily believe I did, because the gameplay of Fable Legends that I saw on YouTube actually looked pretty good and I would have loved to play that game. At the point they cancelled it, I feel like they should have just launched the game.

Back then they were expensive. Much cheaper now after Brexit.

I dunno anything about that, mate.

FromSoft...

Platinum would be great for Fable

Both awful ideas. Fable needs to retain its British charm. Playground would be good, or a new studio. The only non-British developer who could do the franchise justice would be CD Projekt.

Isn't it obvious? If fable were a priority theyd build a franchise farm to support it

Would seem silly as Lionhead was practically that. Though they didn't have a clue what to do with the franchise. Their concept for Fable IV sounded terrible, like a Dragon Age II style game.

Fable was so bad. Sloppy gameplay, linear environments, stupid humor, no thanks. If it were to come back I'd rather it be totally rethought and reworked and someone other than lionhead (or lionhead staff) working on it, at which you may as well call it something else. Just my 2 cents.

I'm surprised that gamespass is launching before E3

I would've thought gamespass, phantom dust free release and Forza hot wheels would've all been cool stage stuff

You have to start at the beginning of the month, no?

I mean everyone knows it's coming. I'm sure they'll touch on it E3.

MS can't do all these Gigatons in 90 minutes.

It is? Had no idea. And yeah, all of that stuff would have been cool little announcements to flesh out their show. Speaks of confidence... hopefully

How long do you all think the press conference will go for? It will probably be the normal hour and half length but having it on a Sunday might change things. Is it still being aired on TV?

I liked Fable 1 as sort of a proof of concept type deal. I had issues with it but still, I enjoyed it.

Disliked 2/3 though. For me, they went in a direction I hoped they would lessen in sequels. The latter two also weren't very memorable and one of them had such a terrible ending (some dumb things floating in the sky or some such).

I'm still hyped for the E3 conference, but my hype for Scorpio has died down significantly. Not that I don't think the hardware will be worth it, I'm just struggling to find time to play games on my Xbox. I feel like it would need to offer a night and day difference from my One S for me to justify it at this point.

At least we'll have games at the conference too! I'm thinking they'll get Scorpio out of the way right at the start and spend the rest of the show talking software. I'd love to see them announce a few new things for Game Pass too. Launch Sea of Thieves via the service or something.

So since Game Pass is off the books for an E3 reveal, what do we think will be the surprise "available now!" moment. Crackdown 3 Beta? :D. I highly doubt it lol.

Someone from Microsoft a while back when GamesPass was announced tweeted something along the lines of, "if we're announcing something like this now, imagine what we have in store for E3."

So it appears that GamesPass was never intended to be an announcement at E3 in any fashion, and maybe because Microsoft has a lot to announce?

My guess is Fable 4 teaser will close the show, 2018 release date.

Maybe they show the dev, maybe not. But I bet we'll see Fable.

Also, guessing Cuphead will be similar to Inside last year - available now or in two weeks sort of thing.

Someone suggested that maybe we'll get PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in game preview
That would certainly make my E3.

But MS has been revealing a ton of stuff that would have served as nice stage announcements makes me wonder what the hell they have prepped.

You can keep those 2 cents.

Fable was very forward thinking and impressive for its time. The gameplay was simple but fun, and what you dismiss as "stupid humour" was actually great expression of British comedy that clearly resonated with its audience as the franchise leaned more into that over its course. It was that inherent British charm that gave life to that franchise and permeated every inch of Albion, through its lore, narration, story telling, characters and design. I shudder to think what your version of Fable would look like honestly.

Completely agree. Gave 1 and 2 a shot back then, couldn't stand more than 4 hours of either. They also look so bad. The disgusting models and animation were really off-putting for me even at their time. This wouldn't be much a problem if the gameplay was good.

Maybe it gets better? I don't know. I didn't think it was worth finding out.

Come on new Elite Controller! Swappable triggers, bluetooth, USB-C, etc.

I have lots of love for Fable. Hell, even the 3rd one. Just so many ideas crammed into the games. What other games after Fable did good versus evil time altering consequences? What about scars and aging from the first game? What about getting married, firing out some kids, going on an adventure, only to find your kids are in an orphanage? Or going to prison for decades, emerging as a grey old wizard/warrior. How about having to get buff so you could pull a magical sword from a stone?

Damn we need a new Fable.

All of this.

Fable is an IP I wouldn't mind a dedicated studio to. There's no reason Microsoft couldn't have made this their Final Fantasy. A franchise that continually evolves and grows and changes over time.

The name, identity and history of Fable all lend themselves to being a malleable IP. We could have gone beyond Albion. We could have gone to other regions in the lore: Samarkand, the Eastern Kingdom, perhaps revisited Aurora to a great scale, or gone to the Cities of the West, or just a complete new region within that world.

I really appreciate how off the wall some of the ideas in Fable were. You could have a Fable game where your character has a child during the first half of the game, then they die, and you now play as the child growing up, attempting to complete their parent's quest and avenge them. And that sort of stuff would just be par for the course in a Fable game.

Other than making it an MMO though, I don't know how Microsoft would make it a GaaS

Early Fable had a card mechanic for finding beards/tattoos etc. Maybe link it to that. 🤣
