Wonder Woman (DCCU) Review Thread (RT 93%)

Empire Magazine!

Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad may all have been hits, but they’ve been rather joyless, largely critically savaged affairs that delivered the pow, but little of the wow. Wonder Woman changes all that. And it does so by looking to the past, taking inspiration from the likes of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. But the film’s biggest debt is to Superman The Movie. Both structurally — the opening half-hour in Themyscira is akin to the Krypton segment of Richard Donner’s movie — and tonally. Like Christopher Reeve’s Superman, Gal Gadot’s Diana is a bright beacon of hope in a world of greys.

'Wonder Woman' Review: DC Comics' Best Film Since 'The Dark Knight' - Scott Mendelson

Here's the short version: Wonder Woman is good. It's, by default, the best live-action DC Comics movie since The Dark Knight. It is, by default, the best female-centric comic book superhero movie ever made and is on a different plane from Elektra, Catwoman and Supergirl (and Barb Wire and Tank Girl and Red Sonja). To those who have been waiting for this picture their entire lives, who have yearned to see Wonder Woman on the silver screen in her own movie hacking, slashing and lassoing for justice and compassion, you can take a breath and relax. Even though the finished product has some serious issues, and the final product doesn't quite measure up to that dynamite 2009 animated movie, Gal Gadot makes a spectacular superheroine. Come what may, the much-discussed DC Films has given us a dynamic and definitive big-screen variation of Wonder Woman.

About as good as you can expect from him

This quote from Barker's Variety review is a good one, too:

It says quite a lot about the general tenor of the DC cinematic universe that a film set in the trenches of WWI, with a plot revolving around the development of chemical warfare, is nonetheless its most cheerful and kid-friendly entry. But while “Wonder Woman” may dabble in moments of horror, it never revels in the vicissitudes of human depravity quite like its predecessors. A huge factor in its ability to convey a note of inherent goodness lies in Gadot, whose visage radiates dewy-eyed empathy and determination — and whose response to the iniquity of human nature isn’t withdrawn cynicism but rather outrage.

Chicago Tribune accidently confused Chris Pine with Chris Evans lol.

Edit: happy for everyone involved that this movie seems to have turned out well. Its always fun when we get breakout movie stars.

Erbland's review at IndieWire comparing it to Superman: The Movie
Phillips' review at Chicago Tribune and Nashawaty's at EW comparing it to Captain America: The First Avenger

This is speaking to me. Speaking right to me.

The First Avenger thing really resonated with me beyond just being set in a world war. Both movies go for that unironic earnestness and heroism and it works.

Remember when Gal was announced and people were shitting on her for not being buff enough or whatever?

Yeah...sounds like most critics are saying she is the one that gives the movie it's song.

Another thing I want to say about the movie is that Wonder Woman in this is the most purely heroic character we've seen since Chris Evans Captain America. And I know I've made that comparison already, but it bears repeating. Diana is truly selfless, compassionate, loving, and driven purely by her desire to help others.

This is that classic Chris Reeves superheroism, fam. I love it.
