Xbox E3 Conference 6/11 2pm PST

Looking for a pattern in past Xbox E3 briefings I looked at 2013 (new console) and 2016 (recency):

Great data, thanks! Minecraft is its own segment these days, expect to see several minutes on it.

They have the biggest library now. With BC and Xbox One games you are swimming in games.
No. Even if you count the BC 360 games (and you don't count PSNow), Xbox One still has a much smaller library than PS4.

Imagine if og xbox backwards compatibility happened, all xbox games free.
Compatibility I could easily see announced, but putting every game on a digital store, for free?! Apart from the cost of that, would they even have the rights? (And seriously, you can't ignore the cost--it would be immense.)

Additional 4gb of ram for gaming that is also upgraded to ddr5 from being ddr3 in Xbox one.
Actually, for games it's just an extra 3GB of RAM in Scorpio.

The difference is MS likes to do first announces with CGi or in-engine non-gameplay trailer when the game is >1 year away.
No, there's no real differential in this area. They have a slightly higher percentage of games first shown as CG than Sony, but neither platform does that very much. And it seems to be going down, too: for the entirety of 2016 only four conference showings--from Sony and Microsoft combined--were CG.

See, this is inherently false.

What actually happened was the internet exploded against Microsoft and the Xbox (One) and Sony fans/fanboys/enthusiasts/evangelists had an absolute field day wrecking havoc on what Microsoft (deservedly) brought upon themselves (especially after a generation where Microsoft came out of nowhere and knocked Sony around for so long). From TVTVTV to specifications to Don Mattrick to used games to Kinect 2.0 NSA spygate. The people that were actually Xbox fans were called out almost everywhere besides Xbox-centric websites, and even labeled shills at times. That eventually died down but the stigma remained for a long time until Microsoft started righting the ship.

From a rational standpoint, it felt like Xbox fans and even the media at times were just being defensive, and rightfully so. I mean, the FUD spread so badly, people would come to my store and be surprised at the Xbox kiosk because they assumed it had Wii graphics from what they read online. Wii graphics. Seriously. I had trouble selling 1080p TVs in 2013 for anything lower than 46 inches, and I made freaking commission, so imagine that. It wasn't THAT much of a huge visually between both consoles and frankly what should have been a bigger deal IMHO is performance, but I digress.

Scorpio is so, so much more than "true 4k." GDDR5 upgrade, 4GB more RAM, 4K BR drive, much better GPU and ever so slightly better CPU are really great things, but this is what Sony fans will never understand: they went from having the "most powerful" console for 3 years (something that they downplay today whilst talking about games being #1 even though the goalposts for years have been power, graphics and 1080p) to having an EVEN BETTER console because Sony was reactionary to potential PC converts as well as knowing that PS4 would be a terrible way to push PSVR. So, Sony gamers and fans went from having a better console to an even BETTER one, and Scorpio is bypassing them both, and going to be the undisputed best console to play multiplats which account for 95% of the libraries for the next 3 years. And when Sony releases the PS5 in 2020 (maybe late 2019 but I doubt it for many reasons) Microsoft can have a Scorpio2 ready to release a year after and continue the same thing, which will be fully backwards compatible even with your 360 games, something that we don't even know if Sony will do yet. So, it's not "true 4k vs fake 4k" in their minds, it's most likely what I wrote. And this isn't even taking into account all the things PS4Pro does wrong that Scorpio does right, technically wise, like 1080p downsampling or playing 4K blurays (which was a big, big thing for the PS3).

All Microsoft needs to do is three things right now:

Build first party portfolio and Xbox/Win10 exclusives
They will focus on this next since they have hardware already where they want for the coming years

Make internal publishing team to allow every game not first-party/contracted by Sony/Nintendo available on Xbox and or Win10
They just rebranded MS Studios to MS Studios Global Publishing, so maybe this is in the works? I.E., all games available for the best console to play said games, including Japanese games that won't fund a port themselves. Expansion of ID@Xbox which has received phenomenal praise from devs? Likely to start all digital, maybe not physical releases, just sending teams over to port? Thoughts?

Continue to make Xbox Live the best place to play
They have been doing this since console launch and the inclusion of Clubs and LFG have been amazing XBL additions, as well as MS Software Ninjas making the atrocity that was XB1 launch dashboard into what it is today, which is infinitely better. Just continue what they're already doing here.

Anyways, my 2 cents. More like 25 cents :P I'm actually a lot more excited for Switch this year for a couple of reasons but I hope Microsoft has a killer E3!

i agree with everything, last december i bought a xbox one s bundle(it came with gears 1,2,3,4 and halo mcc and 5) for 300$ and got too forza horizon 3 , the first thing that i realised is how great the controller is , my wife even made one with the design lab, and since december ive been only playing on xbox with my wife(i only took a break to play horizon zero dawn) Microsoft has been doing some good thing lately with xbox, im really hyped for MS conference and scorpio

Pretty much. I mean we generally know all of sonys except for the random Japanese curveball game. We know what their studios are doing except for sucker punch and their new IP

Nintendo is easy to guess as well. Pokémon, smash, pikmin etc as well as the games they announced at their console reveal
Yeah, I think that is where Sony's surprises may come from this year - Japanese partnerships.

This is probably why people are "downplaying" things as you say:

2013:
Microsoft and Sony released their consoles at the same time, the PS4 is 40% more powerful while being 100$ cheaper.

2016:
Sony released a more powerful PS4 that can play games at 4K.

2017:
Microsoft will release a 40% more powerful console while being at least 100$ more expansive, a year later.

So as you can see, the scorpio being more powerful and releasing a year later is quite logical, can you say the same thing about what happend in 2013? there is your answer.

No, there's no real differential in this area. They have a slightly higher percentage of games first shown as CG than Sony, but neither platform does that very much. I was not making comparisons with Sony... I'm refuting the notion that Scalebound was somehow not deep in development just because the game was slated for a far later release than ReCore. I worded my statement poorly.

Personally I've never been a fan of CGI trailers at all. They can look great but also give you no indication of what the game will be like at all. Nah! Give me a nice gameplay demonstration over that any day. If MS really is done with showing or announcing games too soon this should mean the end of CGI trailers too and that's only something I can applaud. For this year however it'll mean a pretty standard show, not bad but probably also nothing that will shock us. That is hopefully E3 2018. Doubt they'll do GC this year.
Any other year, I'd agree, but I think MS needs to show that they have more in the pipeline than Halo, Gears, and Forza until the end of time. While it frustrates me that Sony basically pads their press conferences with CGI trailers for games that won't release for a year or two, they do a good job of hyping up their audience. For example, Shenmue isn't anywhere close to being ready but it was used as a "big" announcement on Sony's stage.

Microsoft needs to show some stuff that's on the horizon that speaks to their investment in first party, if only for the narrative of it all.

Honestly, even Fable would do that. Just announce a CGI trailer for the next Fable game and people's ears perk up.

You are severely underestimating why Sony manages to do the theatrics they do without notable backlash, whereas Xbox's attempt at doing so (back in 2014) was nowhere close to being as effective.

If you look at what games are paraded via CGi trailers or stuff that has to wait forever, they are "dream game" announcement category of "no way this is real" level. People forgive or disregard smokes and mirrors when the announcements are seen as miraculous or unbelievable. Hype takes over the moment.

Or something like Kojima's announcement of DS, where critics and fans tend to give Kojima pass due to his masterful art of trailer editing. And even then, many people do have criticisms regarding it's early announcement.

Whereas when you see other Sony first-party announcements that are highly regarded, they are extremely well-done gameplay segments that many consider to be top-class by E3 demo standards. Horizon's reveal. Uncharted 4 set-piece demo. God of War reveal.

Those are the reveals that stand out when people think of Sony's conferences. And personally I think only Forza Horizon 3 and Titanfall's reveal come close in terms of wow factor.

A CGi Fable trailer would just be met with snark, because fans will remember Lionhead was just closed recently, and people won't believe it's a real game if it's a CGi trailer.

A new Fable reveal needs to be a full 10-minute vertical slice that is absolutely gorgeous if it wants to be a memorable and amazing reveal.

I feel like this approach is a double-edged sword for Microsoft right now. Announcements of future games can really excite people, but they need to be games that'll see release. In a gen where Microsoft hit us with a few "big" projects that either had to be scrapped or re-worked I think fans are a bit more cautious.

I'd love to see them give us a few announcements like that, but I'm just not confident in the idea. I think they want to be relatively safe in that area.

I think that is all it really is. MS would just need to execute properly if they do it again. As you said though, I don't think they want to take that risk again any time soon. The wounds are still too fresh.

A CGI trailer of a new Fable isn't gonna cut it I'm afraid. I get your point and I very much agree but we have to be realistic here. The way Spencer spoke about investing in first party made it really sound like nothing substantial has been done yet. They said they had shown how dedicated they have been to improving Xbox as a platform and service and they first party would get that same kind of dedication. Really sounds like something for 2018 if you ask me.

This E3 will likely be all about the already announced games, maybe some new indie titles, hopefully the new game from Moon Studios and probably one new thing is my guess. MS already confirmed no Halo and Gears at the show. Forza 7 for sure though. Kinda surprises me that they haven't announced it already.

If major work toward improving first party operation has only really begun in the past few months, even 2018 might be too soon. I could see Microsoft just kind of riding out this generation with having the best console hardware and a few successful service games while positioning themselves to slay the next generation.

I find it interesting that a lot of people presume MS has nothing new to show. Has that ever been the case? Is it because of the lack of leaks?

I can't remember an E3 where all they talked about was stuff that was already known.

The sad thing is a lot of the criticism or things to improve on , if they were acted upon, they actually became reality. , the people who question the critical posters and what they are saying, would be saying how happy they are.

If you are passionate about something, why wouldn't you want to see it improve and get better? How does it get better if your attitude to criticism is "no, everything is fine".

i think it has to do with insiders saying ms doesn't have anything, and all ms owned studios having known projects

You're right about that. I guess that's possible. It'll be like the last years of 360 again. The best platform for multiplats but exclusives not so much. I hope not though.

I mean I think it was right after Phil became Xbox boss that he acknowledged that first party needed work, yet here we are with no real results. Except for some cancelations and closures of a few studios that in my book shouldn't have been closed. With that in mind, didn't they do anything to try to improve first party? Were all those years really spent on correcting Mattrick's mistakes?

So, MS' conference will seemingly be 60 minutes according to the Twitch image below. Maybe indicative of a change in pace relative to previous years?

https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/1*WkS_-atlfTuebo90tzqg0w.png

What the hell? No I hope not. That's just way too brief. Didn't Major Nelson already confirm it was 90 minutes a while ago?

I don't think it's just begun. First party for MS includes more than just the tent pole stuff of their owned studios

I hope they don't spend 30 minutes talking about Scorpio and then another 30 minutes talking about the games we already know about running on Scorpio.
Why would they do that. Last yeR the 1 s video was like 2 minutes long. Most of the Scorpio impressions will come from the media as it's hard to convey differences in video. They give a short video with release date and price

Hopefully they show off pure gameplay and in game trailers, after all their cancelled projects, no one will trust a cg trailer from microsoft

I know some will react negatively to this, but I see this a sign of a tighter, better paced show.

It's not worrisome on its own, but this supposed shorter conference time is also compounded by a lot of other negative vibes like insiders saying not to expect too much in terms of games, and stuff like smaller booth space doesn't exactly help the feeling, even if it's not really a factor that influences game announcements. (only playable demo games)

How can 60 minutes be enough when you reveal your hardware and have plenty of games to show? Sure they are already announced games but I'd say they need to have a proper gameplay demo for all of them so people know what it is.

On top of that comes mixed reality stuff. Man this is a let down.

And when you consider how little they announced last year and nothing since. Having said that, if it's 60 mins and the show is really good, will anyone give a shit?

I'm thinking they'll take a similar approach as well. They went to DF to get the technical details out of the way for a reason.

What do you guys think Microsoft will show at the PC Gaming show? Could be interesting this year. Some non-games software and Minecraft is probably a safe bet, but we could see some surprises. Age of Empires surprises :).

I don't think we will see lengthy demos at E3 Stage , cause this is quiet a less time for a Show with a hardware reveal , also they have to talk about Game pass and other services.

Kinda jives with what Matt has been hinting at. Don't expect many new games, they going to be focusing on Forza, State of Decay, Crackdown, Sea of Thieves. If it is only 60 though they better get rid of fluff like Minecraft, Final Fantasy horrible gameplay, and cringy Bloodstained whipping. Without that stuff in past years I would have been happier with a tight 60min anyways.

We will see

Minecraft will be there according to Jez Corden

Uh oh. Didn't Phil say he wanted to spend more time "telling the story of our games"? I'm expecting long gameplay demos for Crackdown and State of Decay, similar to how they did Forza Horizon 3 last year. Throw in the usual Minecraft/MR shit on top, doesn't leave much time at all.

You all don't think it can just be a change in pace? Granted, it does make me wonder how exactly this will go because of stuff like Scorpio and Crackdown 3 that will get a chunk of time. Maybe the more filler type stuff will be considerably shorter.

That's so annoying. I get it's popular and all, but is the E3 conference really the time to talk about a game that's been out for years?

Edit: I guess they likely need it to show off MR stuff, but damn I'm getting tired of seeing them talk about the game.

To me it sounds like it will be way too short. For me their shows never felt too long. They now are going to show Scorpio, the price, release date and name. Gameplay demos of Crackdown, Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2. Didn't they also say more mixed reality stuff would be at the Xbox show? Jez Corden mentioned Minecraft for the Xbox show.

Surely they will talk about game pass, Xbox live and new features. Way too fucking brief. So much for Major saying it was 90 minutes. I don't like this.

It's possible. It's possible they can go over 60 mins if that's what they have...if they have pace after pace it can still be a good show.

I think fear is coming that it won't be enough time to show anything new (assuming they have new stuff). We will see how it pans out.

I can still be 90 mins who knows, but also I would hope that MS is smart to not do that VR/AR shit again cause it doesn't translate very well on a live stage. Mentioning it is one thing but trying to show it off just takes too much time.
