Nintendo E3 plans detailed

Metroid Prime 4 would be cool, but I'd honestly prefer Retro working on an IP they haven't worked on before. As long as it's still single-player-focused, anyway.

K. Rool is only memorable because he's the first villain. Other then that's he's honestly a pretty lame.

I liked the Snowmads better design wise, but some of them were boring. They did have better theme music tho.

Honestly, if Retro can't do it, I still rather see a Metroid Prime (First Person) style game either developed internally or from another studio.

As long as whatever team is doing it goes back to play the original trilogy first to reconnect with what made them great games, I'll feel better about it.

That would hold some meaning if Reggie had anything at all to do with Nintendo making games, I don't think he does though.

He still knows about what's in development, even if he's not a developer himself.

I'm as excited as anyone for Nintendo's E3, but I think it is going to underwhelm. Given the early success of the Switch, all they need to do is spend more time showing off games that are already announced and it will feed into the frenzy. There may be a few announcements, but nothing too wild. Especially since the conference is only going to be roughly 45 minutes.

Agreed. They almost ALWAYS underwhelm at E3. But, if you put all the announcements they pepper out over the course of any given year into one presentation it's pretty damn sweet. They just don't put as much stock into E3 as everyone else.

And since E3 is mainly for mainstream media to cover, all they need to do is MARIO MARIO MARIO MARIO MARIO.

K. Rool is terrible.

This is Nintendo, Metroid will probably not be there as they have multiple Directs during the year. They are almost definitely not going to show anything that's releasing after December (which is why Mario is the big focus). At best, expect one big tease of a 2018 game, maybe Metroid, who knows. There's no way they're going to show more than one 2018 game, keep your hype in check. But it will be focused on Mario and some of the games releasing between now and Odyssey's release.

Yes it will be about Mario. Don't forget, with Scorpio being shown, and possible new Sony hardware, Nintendo MUST show 3rd party support. They have to assure people it isn't just a Nintendo box. They also need to lift the veil on the online services. With Arms and Splatoon about to release, people will want to know about voice chat.

IMO you will see some 3rd party support announced. They will show during the E3 week Skyrim, Fifa, and NBA as well.

In terms of surprise announcements, a Retro title is more likely than a Metroid one, let alone both. However, any surprise is probably going to be a different game altogether.

Where did you hear this?

I still think we'll hear about the rumored third party developed Metroid title, and we haven't heard from Retro in over 4 years so it would seem to be as good a time as we can get. But you never know.

Their e3 Directs are always around 45 minutes in length.

I'm pretty sure Retro isn't making Metroid or Donkey Kong.

Aren't they closer to an hour typically? I'm just curious if someone has confirmation about the length.

Where did you hear this?

I know there was a thread somewhere where you could add the Nintendo E3 conference as a calendar block to your GMail or some sort of e-mail client, but it only blocked off an hour for the event. Typically, they are just short of an hour, so while it is speculation on my part, I think 45 minutes is a fair estimate.

2013 - 41:19

2014 - 46:55

2015 - 48:26

So yeah, the events have actually increased in length over the years. But the average (rounded) is almost exactly about 45 minutes, the first skewing closer to 40 and the latest skewing closer to 50.

Thanks, interesting. I'm surprised 2015 was longer than 2014, it felt like there was way less content. I guess there still could've been.

Anyway 45 minutes is a safe assumption I guess.

Yeah, that surprised me too. The conference that many people felt lightest was actually the longest.

Though honestly, I think it's because they padded the hell out of it. They had such long segments about why Star Fox Zero's title had a certain kanji, how they made the Yarn Yoshi amiibos, all the people performing the Mario theme... But they didn't actually show off a lot of game footage. I remember the general vibe being more that it was very slow, so seeing it be that long makes sense.

Also I remember the puppet intro being longer than the Robot Chicken intro.

E3 2013 is the shortest because it basically used the typical Direct format, so there weren't any sketches and not a ton of filler.

I have no idea what Retro is making but I just can't help but feel there's going to be a huge backlash to it.

Meanwhile, if it's another DKC, I'll be weeping in a corner while silently praising Nintendo to high heavens.

DKC is a series I always loved. When they announced DKCR at E3 2010, I literally lost my mind. I couldn't believe that series was coming back. While I liked the game when it came out, I was disappointed in the fact that it felt more like Mario than DKC. Tropical Freeze I wasn't too excited for until I heard David Wise was composing the score. Then the game came out and was such a huge leap in the right direction, but I still think there's room for improvement. I really, really want that third game.

This thread makes me realized how big Metroid is here on GAF. Wow. Hope you guys will get what you want!

After reading for the first time the tweet from the EG guy, he also did mention Pikmin 4 for Switch. And clarified his claims are backed up by at least 3 sources. So maybe there is indeed a Pikmin switch AND hey Pikmin. Hope regenerated !

I'm actually guessing it will be a longer Direct. Somewhere between 45 and 55 minutes. Depends on how much they decide to announce during Tree house Live.

If David Wise himself told Evb about his involvement in Snake Pass and DK then it probably is true.

That is my hope. It is possible though that the DK project is not a 2D DK, or that Retro is working on multiple projects, or is working on one project internally by themselves and another, like DK, with the assistance of another studio.

wait there is a GAF leaker? Havent kept up with the rumours

Edit: while I am very much hoping for a DK project, I really have no idea if this leak is legit. If the entirety of the info EvB stated is what we said to him (if I read his post correctly), it's possible David Wise is composing for Retro but for another game entirely. (Maybe I'm misreading those posts, though.)

I'm pretty sure all you people begging for Metroid are masochists. You will be in pain if Nintendo doesn't unveil a title at E3 and even if one is shown, the chances of you liking it are pretty low. You've got to like the pain if you keep putting yourself through this.

Hmmmm interesting, thanks!

Idk personally about Retro with DK again, I remember them once saying that working on metroid became boring so I would've thought that working on another DK game would become boring for them which is why I wouldn't see them working on DK again but on something new... hopefully!

For Retro, I think something in the first-person shooter/adventure, RPG, and action-adventure genres would be generally well received. Anything else...not sure.

In terms of IP, I think a new IP is guaranteed to be received well if it doesn't follow in the footsteps of Splatoon and ARMS as a colorful multiplayer game (because I think people see Retro as being capable of bringing a different flavor to Nintendo's portfolio). An old abandoned IP is also probably guaranteed to be received well unless it's something people believe that Nintendo was right to abandon. Doing DK would get some backlash, and I think Metroid would get some as well but in a smaller amount.

I don't think a huge backlash is inevitable since I think there are a few "crowdpleasers" they could release, but I do think some backlash is guaranteed. There is no way they'll please everyone, and no matter what, a group of people will be disappointed.

I wonder what the level of backlash would be if Retro were making an action-adventure DK game. I'm guessing people would wish it was a new IP unless they really explored DK as a character.

No problem! With TF, they said they went back to DK because they had a lot more ideas. Perhaps they have still more they want to execute in that universe. But then again, I think it's entirely possible they are working on something completely different (or as I mentioned, potentially multiple projects since IIRC they've been said to have the capacity to do so.)

What do they both have in common? Arm cannons!!

I wonder how people would feel about Geist. I really doubt it's actually coming but it would fill a genre hole in the Switch's lineup and could have some interesting new mechanics that warrant a revival. People didn't like that game too much though (and with good reason, the second half was pretty awful).

Things like Eternal Darkness and StarTropics would definitely be well received though.

The thing about Metroid is that it is Nintendo's other adventure series. And I like Nintendo's approach to adventure games. I really want there to be more games like them out of Nintendo, beyond just liking the trappings of Metroid.

Ideally, I'd want Retro to be making a Metroid or a game inspired by Zelda and Metroid.

Agreed. They almost ALWAYS underwhelm at E3.
Reallly? In the last 10 years:
2006: Decent
2007: Underwhelming
2008: Awful
2009: Pretty good
2010: Very good
2011: Good
2012: Good outside of fireworks ending
2013: Good (but boring format due to being first digital presentation)
2014: Very good (perfected the digital presentation format)
2015: Underwhelming, but entertaining
2016: We were told going in it would only be Zelda/Treehouse, so I'd say expectations were exceeded with what we got.

They've had about 3 negatively received shows with only 1 being one of historically awful E3 shows. 6 were received pretty positively with 2 being amazing. 2012 was well received up until the anticlimactic ending.

I mean it's definitely a POV thing, but I think the announcements I've been most excited about have more often than not been in the directs throughout the year rather than E3. Wind Waker HD and Majora's Mask 3D come to mind.
