I mean it's definitely a POV thing, but I think the announcements I've been most excited about have more often than not been in the directs throughout the year rather than E3. Wind Waker HD and Majora's Mask 3D come to mind.

Idk personally about Retro with DK again, I remember them once saying that working on metroid became boring so I would've thought that working on another DK game would become boring for them which is why I wouldn't see them working on DK again but on something new... hopefully!

I think E3 2016 also deserves a shoutout, even though it was primarily one game. I was utterly spellbound by the demos of the Great Plateau. I must've watched the Treehouse's food gathering/cooking demo like 100 times. Such a fantastically well-designed area.

I doubt this E3 will be underwhelming. They already have a good foundation with games we know about, but haven't seen any or enough gameplay for yet. Odyssey, Rabbids, FE Warriors, Xenoblade 2. If they show even ONE unannounced game people have been clamoring for then that's already a good E3. If they show multiple... it could be one of the best E3 presentations ever.

It'd be great to get another 3D platformer. With Odyssey coming though I'm uncertain if we'll see another 3D platformer so soon. If Retro is working on DKR2, I'm not sure I'd expect to see it yet with MK8D having just released.

Would you be okay with upgrade fees? I believe that was the last rumor we had, from Eurogamer last year.

I badly want a DK two pack so I can get DKCR with normal controls, on a TV, at 60 frames. Shake to roll mechanic just wasn't my jam.

More than likely they'll have one or two games at E3 that will be slated for an early 2018 release just to cover their bases.

Federation Force is the reason I'm on GAF. It is the thing that drove me to comment on the internet.

2016 had no exciting announcements. I was not sold on BotW, especially not the aspects that e3 focused on. Moreover, I was hungry for new and exciting content that spoke to me, something Nintendo had left me hungry for after e3 2015. Throw in anxiety about NX.

And I'm still looking for a stand out e3 this year. I don't think I'll get it. I'm in a better way because BotW won me over and Switch is a very good product but I'm not going to be excited by the fairly conservative showing of the sort I expect Nintendo to put on.

If Retro is there and their game speaks to me, if 3DS style support looks closer at hand than it seems, and so on...I'll be happy.

Agreed. They have to leave some reveals for later in the year and next year. If recent E3 presentations are any indication, the focus will mostly be on games coming in the next 9-12 months, which a few exceptions, and at this point we know more of the Nintendo lineup for the rest of the year than we normally would.

Usually, when Nintendo says focus - and based on previous Directs and E3 presentations - I expect we will mostly see games coming in the next 9-12 months, with a few exceptions.

I remember your concern about the hunting. I'm a huge animal lover myself, but the hunting in BotW is so quick, painless, and cartoonish that I didn't mind shooting everything I see, lol. I just reason that everything reincarnates in Zelda's world.

Still a tad surprised it's in the game, though.

January was on point with Switch being a JRPG machine. Just didn't seem close at hand. The other stuff there looked even farther afield or more inchoate.

I do also want to see more things like a Phoenix Wright announced for Switch. More VNs/adventure stuff. I want that DS legacy to continue.

And then from Nintendo I want Retro. I want Metroid. I want FE to look like my dreams.

So if I were Nintendo:

Maybe the stuff they plan to show for Super Mario Odyssey is SO AWESOME that, like Zelda last year, it could easily carry its own show. And thus I (as Nintendo) may reason that — along with Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Mario + Rabbids and more on Splatoon 2 and a final push for ARMS — there's not much more needed to show at E3.

So, while I might have a Smash in the wings, or a Pokemon Stars... I decide to save it for another time. I further reason that we're already going to sell every Switch we can possibly manufacture for the foreseeable future. The logistics of creating enough Switches to satisfy demand for Monster Hunter XX and Splatoon 2 in Japan alone are bordering on impossible.

On the other hand... If I went into overkill and unloaded more big guns at E3, it'd be good for my company's stock prices. It'd increase demand when supply inevitably runs short (no need for artificial scarcity, either), which will at least help new shipments sell out quick when they finally arrive.

In conclusion: If I were Nintendo, I don't know what I'd do, lol.

I'm really curious where they go from here. Will this year's "Spotlight", as they call it, be something that can top their performance at E3 2014? Will Koizumi and/or Nintendo's marketing team continue the trend of wacky skits, solid trailers and visually-eclectic interviews? This Spotlight, which is probably what they're going to call all their big clusters of reveals (I see the name getting re-used for TGS announcements this year), is going to define how they proceed with their information distribution online. They've already showed that they have what it takes to continue the game-centric and smaller Directs, but I want to see how this plays out, because it will reflect how Nintendo is going to proceed for a good chunk of the Switch generation.

Yeah, those really stood out to me on his list. In my opinion, the reception to those two conferences are part of the reason why Nintendo stopped doing live presentations at E3.

Also, their 2006 conference was a fair bit better than "decent".

So I don't think this could really generally be seen as a disappointing E3, unless they really don't announce anything new. Which I very much doubt will be the case.

It may not be one of the best E3's either, but I have high hopes that they'll choose to show a lot more of their cards than people are thinking.

I looked back at some comments from the E3 2014 thread and as well as the Giant Bomb thread and it looks like some of the non-fans weren't exactly enthused with it. I kinda see why, it was mostly a lot of "niche" stuff like Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors and Xenoblade, and some smaller scaled titles like Kirby Rainbow Curse, Captain Toad and Mario Maker. I mean the big Smash character reveal at the end was an anime trailer revolving around a secondary character from a minor Nintendo franchise.

Of course, I am a core Nintendo fan, and I happen to adore that secondary character from that minor Nintendo franchise, so E3 2014 was pretty great for me. But, I could kinda see why people who don't particularly care about stuff like Bayonetta, Xenoblade and Kid Icarus probably weren't hugely enthralled by the event.

Overall, I think Nintendo's E3 should be good. I find it a bit hard to believe we saw EVERYTHING they had to offer for the rest of the year and early 2018 back in January. Usually, Nintendo tends to keep their hands a bit close to their chest and they're not shy about announcing games only a few months from release. Not to mention, seeing as the Wii U has been mostly left for dead these past few years and they began to mostly move away from the 3DS last year as well, I think we may be surprised by how much they have to show. Of course, since Nintendo also has their Directs to announce new games and make some odd decisions here and there, their E3 can disappoint but I'm cautiously optimistic here

Nah, 2013 was pretty good, with games like 3D World, Smash, Tropical Freeze, etc. Wasn't the most entertaining but had pretty good announcements overall. In recent years, starting from around 2010, I'd say only 2011, 2012, and 2015 were outright bad. Everything else was decent to good, with some, like 2010 and 2014, being great. Last year was mainly on BotW and, considering the hype it drummed up that didn't end even after the game's release, I'd say it did its job

- Announce a new imprint called 'Nintendo HD Classics' where they will bring HD GC, Wii, Wii U & 3DS games to Switch

- Retro finishing the DKC:R trilogy with a new game featuring K Rool and the Kremlins

- New DLC seasons announced for MK 8: Deluxe

- Tease of a new, massive open world Pokemon adventure featuring classic 'mons and regions

- Advance Wars Switch!

- Luigi's Mansion 3

that's true of anything, really, but the format was key. the digital event with the skits was paced so much better than the typical presser and the debut of Treehouse Live was great. honestly Treehouse Live has been the best thing to happen for off-location E3 viewing in a long long while.

so even if the content didn't resonate with you you can still appreciate the approach
