Bill Maher apologizes for N-word. HBO/Sasse also comment

People have been saying this because

1. he doesn't hesitate when he says it; he doesn't appear to be reaching for a word that's outside of his normal vocabulary

2. hearing the word "field" and then immediately jumping to slavery makes it seem like he's got slavery on the mind already
He's got slavery on the mind? Lol okay. I'm not ever gonna defend half the shit Maher says or does because he's a fucking turd, but this is reaching.

he made a mistake. he apologized. Time to move on.. This movement on this internet to cancel his show over this is ridiculous.

Why?

For me it's more of a final straw thing. The Islam stuff. The Milo stuff. Now this. This racist joke wasn't clever. It wasn't insightful. It didn't offer a valuable perspective.

It was just racist. Not just in it's use of the N word. In it's presumptions. It says a lot in my eyes about Maher, that he would throw out a joke like this, then try to play it off as 'just' a joke.

Freedom of speech works because you are held accountable for what you say. I don't see why Maher hasn't run out of second chances by now.

You are more than welcome to move on. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing.

I wonder if any black guests will reference it in the future or at least ask him why he feels comfortable enough to say it.

I was real tired guys! And c'mon, everyone has "house n- " in the chamber at all times
Didn't he say "I'm always tired on Fridays cuz I usually say something I regret that keeps me up and this was worse than usual?"

Sincere question not a defense cuz it's irrelevant. I just keep people saying he used being sleepy as a defense but it kinda read the opposite.

Yeah people are reading his statement wrong, he's not saying he said the n-word cause he was tired. That'd be so dumb.

I'm not interested in defending him either though he acted indefensibly.

Highlight in my post where I said you were white. Waiting. You can be purple and a woman for all I know. But you made sure to comment so I want those receipts.

Okay.

You won't have to apologize if you just don't say it.

You heard fellas, Nuu said us colored folks should not be offended that a white man thinks it is okay to say nigger casually in a joke. Let's go home.

Now serious. People should not dwell on Bill Maher or try to cancel his show, his popularity is at an all time high and nothing will come from it, but it is idiotic to say that no one should find offense in his words. The best likely outcome was an apology with all stakeholders speaking up. That's what they did. This adds another reason why I think Maher is a shit head.

Saying "us colored folks" implies that I am not part of such a group.

The GOP haa controlled all three branches of govt many times just as the Democrats have.
But they don't now. If a party loses this badly, it's because they don't make people want to vote for them. The Democrats are doing something wrong, period.

Its just people not reading past the "I am always tired on friday". and not really caring about his apology anyway.

What pisses me off the most about Bill Maher is that he has so much fucking potential to be the antithesis to the idea that political correctness is a liberal thing. He could have been the kind of liberal who isn't afraid to:

- Tell conservatives they are pussies who can't handle seeing a black guy take knee during s song

- Tell cops they aren't getting a fucking safe space from criticism

- Tell Sean Hannity to get Trump's dick out of his throat

- Make numerous abortion jokes

- etc.

But instead Bill Maher is only politically incorrect in the worst ways such as:

- defending scumbags like Ann Coulter and Milo

- Using the N word casually

- Hating muslims more than many conservatives do

- Sucking up to numerous conservatives

I mean can someone please just convince HBO to kick out Bill Maher and replace him with someone more like the people that roasted Ann Coulter last year?

Okay.

Then why are you trying to police others?

Not that it changes anything, but I hope people know this a reference to Django lol. If you haven't seen that movie, go watch it.

Each person is created with intrinsic value and worth, and has infinite value and inalienable rights. In times like these, its better to forgive than to dehumanize those who hurt us. As Martin Luther King said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

Martin Luther King- love your enemies

I don't this this is necessarily true. People could have just as easily thought Democrats had it in the bag and relied on others to take care of it.

Those who aren't accepting his apology, what else do you want him to do?

There is nothing he can do, and Bill said a slur, and its not his first time he belittle an group of people. He also said it so easily, like do Bill used the slur privately? So in my mind, he's blackball. I'm not watching his show no more, and I hope HBO take his show away.

you have the timeline mixed up, the being sleepy came after the comment. he was sleepless because of the apparent remorse he felt for saying what he said.

Oh, right.

His apology is still terrible. It basically boils down to

"I've been brooding so much about how bad this makes me look that I feel exhausted. I said something racist, but not super racist, just like heat-of-the-moment, stream-of-conscousness, passably racist. Woe is me.

Really sorry, btw."

Which reminds me about Bill's New Rule, as this is actually the real reason why liberals can never win, but instead of addressing that Maher focused on "we need to be tough guys too!"

Not to the point where he and even HBO has to apologize.

Yeah none of these people actually watch the full 60 minutes of content.
NO ONE is talking about this "Charming" and "Dangerous" Nebraska Republican as Rebecca and Elloit immediately pointed out. Its all about how he invited a celebrity comedian to do farm work out of nowhere and a lame joke came out.

We gonna lose midterms for sure. 2020? Shit will probably go more red.

Okay.

If you're black I can certainly see why you'd be upset about not being included.

I don't think it was racist. It was stupid, insensitive, and he should have never ever said it, but Maher's ego is so enormous that he thought he was cool enough with African Americans to be able to use that word. I know it's impossible for a white guy to ever be that cool, but I still think the mistake was more of being completely self-absorbed than actually being racist.

His apology is still shit, but again it's a product of his bloated ego. His actions should suffer actual consequences.

Then why are you trying to police others?
So people of color can't have different opinions on something?

I don't this this is necessarily true. People could have just as easily thought Democrats had it in the bag and relied on others to take care of it.
I don't agree with this. If people want to vote for you they will.

The Democrats seem to be focusing mostly on Russia when campaigning from the tidbit previews that have come across. The average American doesn't give a shit about Russia. They care about jobs and healthcare.

I don't see how racist is mutually exclusive with stupid and insensitive. I think he was stupid and insensitive which is what caused him to do the racist thing. It doesn't matter that there isn't any harmful intent.

I guess it's how you read it. The apology is so short it either feels like an excuse or trying to show regret made him lose sleep. So I'll cop to that. But him having that specific phrase at the tip of the tongue is not normal

Okay.

Lol you want to argue implications of the word us when it is followed directly by the descriptor "colored folks" to explain the targeted audience of your post.

Yes, you can argue that you are not included in us, but it would be because you are not talking to yourself. Not because you are white/non-poc. Do better.

You saying he wasn't referring Django or that it's not in Django? I'd imagine that's what Maher was thinking in that moment, subconsciously at least.

It's American history. I'm pretty certain Maher was referring to American history than some movie. I realize some of ya'll only know history through movies, but that's besides the point.

Why do people think comedians should be able to say whatever the hell they want in the name of jokes? There is a line, and he crossed it (he crossed it a while ago).

Sit down black ppl, god said to take it up the ass with a smile.

You saying he wasn't referencing Django or that it's not in Django? I'd imagine that's what Maher was thinking in that moment, subconsciously at least.
Or he could just be thinking of the colorful history of slavery that Django was referencing and not at all unique in displaying?

Not that it changes anything, but I hope people know this a reference to Django lol. If you haven't seen that movie, go watch it.

Maybe that's how you found out about the dynamics of slavery, "porch n*****" and how they were hated by their fellow slaves etc, but it's not where that came from. It comes from history.

your position is to silence black people by weaponizing Dr. Kings words? Fuck off.

Of course, the obligatory misrepresentation of who MLK was or what he did.

It's like I'm in the Matrix or something.

not at all actually. you and i probably differ on whether we think Maher is a racist. i already stated that he made a mistake.

What mistake was that? I saw him make a choice. You don't just blurt out a nigger joke as a mistake. He clearly thought he could get away with it.
I grantee he would not have apologized if the network hadn't forced him to do so.

But they don't now. If a party loses this badly, it's because they don't make people want to vote for them. The Democrats are doing something wrong, period.

Show me which Democrats are campaigning on any of this. Also, show me all the times people got mad at those who said racist things about Obama, and then explain how he was able to win two elections if that same kind of reaction is what's suddenly killing Democrats now.
