Life is Strange: Before the Storm (3 Episodes Prequel) Announced (by Idol Minds)

How does this work? Why would I change the default outfit on a narrative game?

Since it is a narrative game and games are interactive, it is possible for the player to shape the narrative. By means of dialog choices, and in this case choice of clothes. If you don't like that you should turn to non interactive narrative media.

Eh. Big LiS fan, but I kind of don't want this to exist. Tacked on additions to existing, self-contained stories (especially prequels) tend to feel superfluous at best, and badly fan-ficcy at worst. Still on the fence about whether or not I will even play this.

Why do bad and fan-fic have to go together?

Ashly Burch acted out the character written and directed by the Dontnod. She interpreted that character and developed Chloe's personality. Good acting means finding access to your character. And the art is a product of the work of all the people involved, it's a joint effort.

After the game, she has become an expert on Chloe and has become her voice. So it definitely is interesting to see her further develop her lore. You might or might not be interested in that but it makes a lot of sense for her to take a creative role for the prequel.

In the same way it makes sense to write fan-fiction for games. As players, we also take the role of the characters we play as. The choices offered to us enabling us to shape and develop that character. Writing fan-fiction after the game has ended is just a continuation of that process.

Obviously not everybody has the same capabilities as a writer. Or has had the same chance to develope their writing. But the genre of fan-fiction isn't inherently bad. It's just very obvious about its inspirations and direct in its referentiality. To dislike fan-fiction in a way means to dislike games as narrative media. It means to dislike taking the active part.

It means you'd rather be a pawn that still takes orders from the king than being the true king.

So wait. Burch is involved?

Not interested in the game, but just popping in to say I'm glad Idol Minds are still getting work. Thought they were on the ropes after Ruin/Warrior's Lair got cancelled.

I was ready to buy it day one, but I'm not a huge fan of prequels. However, I was still ready to get it, but then I saw the price. Pretty expensive for 3 episodes, no? Not even the original devs? And it's a prequel? I'll probably wait for a drop.

Life is strange episodes just got better and better, until it became shit in the final episode. Can't freaking wait for this and i really liked Chloe so looking forward to this.

Didn't really become shit, or did you just not like where it went? Serious question. I have pretty mixed thoughts on the final episode, but I would say the quality was pretty high throughout.

I'm definitely going to be in for the Deluxe. The first game was one of the most affecting pieces of media I've ever experienced. If this even touches that, then it's worth $25 to me.

Yeah at that price it's pretty good. I enjoy the characters so at $25 bucks I'm there. I'm ready to see what songs they pick because the first game had an awesome soundtrack.

Hopefully they have a boxed edition too.

Ashley Burch is writing I think, but not voicing the character.

Not voicing? Seems weird.

Not sure I really want this. While I do like Chloe, what really made me appreciate her was how Max saw her. Like Max is like the calm to Chloe's crazy.

Wait so who was that other Dev team that everyone thought was working on this, deck nine or something like that? I wonder what they're doing ?

Well god dammit. You people posting LiS spoilers in a prequel thread kinda fucked up my PS+ freebie... Grrr.

Anyway... Finishing it up now, might check this out, but i sincerely think overall Life is Strange is kinda overrated... Its not bad, and its DEFINITELY better than anything Telltale can barf out... But... Ehhhhh
Which episode you are?

First episode is ok nothing great
2,3,4 are Very good they take your heart out of your Chest and Beat his ass
5 is meh there are beautiful moments but its not a great episode

Max looks / has the same voice like my highschool girlfriend I dated for six years.. Some reason that really added to the story of LiS and I really enjoyed the game, has continued to make me think about it too. Excited to play more.

I don't know, I liked LiS but the elements that made parts of it so special for me likely won't be present. Not feeling this.

Curious what the mechanics will be, given the first game heavily implied the SF elements were a new occurrence. Also curious where the surprises are going to come, given we broadly know the outcome.

I was surprised to see this coming out so soon because DONTNOD was busy with Vampyr, but then seeing it being made by another developper makes senses now.

This developper doesn't have the best track record, hope they can deliver.

Ok, I get it... but its a non canon outfit.

(But to be honest, I thought her classic outfit had the blue hair too. It's less jarring with just the clothes)

I'm not super hyped about this being a prequel but I'll probably buy it if there are good impressions since I really loved the first game.

Just the fact that the hair/clothes have physics is such a small but crucial detail that was sorely missing in the last game.

It's pretty scummy they're charging extra for a deluxe edition with a chance to play as Max. Makes me want to do the opposite and wait for when it's in a sale.

LiS was one of my GOTY when it came out. I only hope this one doesn't feel forced because I fell into the "get a whole new set of characters for any sequels" camp.

Ashly Burch tweeted just now that the SAG-AFTRA strike is the reason she isn't playing Chloe in this game.

Definitely a shame, but I see myself buying this anyway. I'd love to know more about Rachel.

EDIT: Snap, beaten. :)

Ah, so that's why she's not voicing Chloe... :( Sucks because her performance in LiS was incredible, but good on Ashly for sticking to her principles despite how much the character means to her.

So disappointing, why could they not wait for the strike to be over?

I mean voice acting is something that can be done quite late into development.

With the strike over it seems like there could have been time for her to record her lines before the release and get them all finished.

If I had to guess, SE may not have settled on a contract with SAG-AFTRA at the time that Before the Storm was recording.

Re-recording lines for a finished character might have been one paycheck too many for the developers to withstand as well.

All conjecture, of course. We really have no way of knowing the development cycle of Before the Storm and therefore we don't know how easy or difficult it would have been for the developers to make adjustments.

While playing LiS, about a year after it came out, I felt like I missed out by not being able to discuss the game episode by episode on places like GAF. Looking back over the LiS OT, I felt like it would have been a lot of fun to speculate over the game in real time, and uncover clues and discuss theories.
Yep, I played it last year and luckily had a friend with whom I could talk about it (he's the one who insisted that I play it). This time I'm going to participate in the OT, so hoping to see you there!

Graffiti replaces polaroids in Life is Strange prequel Before the Storm

In Life is Strange: Before the Storm protagonist Chloe Price will 'make her mark' on the world by scrawling graffiti, where Life is Strange lead Max Caulfield took polaroid photos.

This was explained by Chris Floyd co-director at Deck Nine Games, the studio working on the three-part Life is Strange prequel. Speaking at a preview event, Floyd said 'The graffiti feature replaces the photography feature from the first game. Max takes photographs, and Chloe makes her mark.' Sometimes you'll get options for what Chloe will write. We saw her scrawl 'SIT AND SPIN' around a circular saw blade.

I've found it hard to be totally psyched about this since I learned Ashly Birch wouldn't be voicing Chloe. :/

Watching this gameplay here, she doesn't even sound close to Ashly's Chloe. I don't know if I'll play this.
