The strangest fucking feeling I've ever had watching a trailer.

Opens with a pig "OH SHIT ITS BG&E2"

Proceeds to show a gritty realistic monkey swearing up a storm "Wait, this sin't BG&E is it?"

Shows desert city "Well, that DID kind of look like this before"

like...what. I'm so hype but it was so weird.

Pretty much my reaction.

Where are people getting prequel from? It's been a long time since I played the first one so I'm genuinely asking. That seemed like older/grizzled Jade to me. I assumed you'd be taking missions/jobs from her or summat.

From Michel Ancel...right after they showed the trailer.

He said on stage it takes place before Jade was born.

I actually can't believe how many people were impressed by this.

I'm gutted. I love Michel Ancel and Ubisoft Montpellier, but this isn't what I expected at all.

The first game was such a gem - with a beautiful stylized art direction and whimsy that fit within that time period so well. Jade and Pey'j were terrific characters, and all the prior mentions of BG&E2 made it seem like we were getting a sequel. Instead we have some fuck-laden game with jiggle physics.

What has been shown so far isn't at all what I wanted on any level. The should call this Beyond Worse and Evil.

In their defense, the sequel I wanted - something more akin to Ratchet & Clank or Psychonauts 2 - probably would perform well in today's market. Maybe they feel that had to make a change to be relevant. Hopefully a new generation of fans can love it, but for now it would appear I'm out.

Sony better pick me up from this low.

They literally said it out on stage. This game takes place before Jade's birth, and that female character at the end has a different name.

Unless they're pulling a Kojima, I think it's safe to assume this is a prequel :P

I mean, i'm not gonna tell you not to believe that, but even Laura is not so sure anymore judging from her latest tweet. Take that as you will.

I was simply pointing out that Nintendo's potential involvement is not disproved by it not being announced today.

Gotta say, hearing Jade's (or BG&E) theme at the end felt so good. Actually really, the second half of the trailer in particular was pretty nice. Even with a different direction, I hope this turns out well.

so, no wild, but a bg&e prequel?...

y'know, i genuinely like ancel, & loved bg&e, but i'm just not believing any of this till see something more substantial than just a flashy trailer devoid of gameplay. which's something i already saw, years back, when they were promoting a bg&e sequel :) ...

I guess it says something about me that I didn't notice the language. I really did think you were complaining about the cheeky attitude, not the words per se. And I see the cheeky attitude as present in the original.

All the swearing really did was tell me this is not for young kids.

People act like swearing implies that something is dumb. While I see that point of view, it can also imply that it's aiming at an older audience, which means it should respect my intelligence more than, say, the usual Mario game plot aimed at toddlers. It's a good message to send when the game stars anthropomorphic animals, and could otherwise be a baby game.

It's been 14 years since BG&E1.

Honestly, if you were expecting it to be the same sort of game you're basically setting yourself up.

Despite the wonderful trailer, I somehow have very low hopes for this after reading more about it.

Also yeah, swearing did seem somehow tonally mismatched.

This was the surprise of the show for me. Sounds so amazing I'm so glad Ubisoft is adapting to modern times and making an online based game.

They really managed to make me not care about a game I was greatly anticipating.

Bravo?

While I'm glad we're getting more Beyond Good and Evil this isn't exactly lighting my world afire like it seems others here. The CG trailer was cool but didn't tell us all that much as CG trailers are want to do but I must admit hearing about no Jade, exploring online with others and other elements aren't quite what I was looking forward to. Not saying it will be a bad game, it very well might be great, but its not exactly blowing me away outside of being excited the series is continuing at all.

Yep. As someone who puts BGE on a very high pedestal - one of my favorite games, if admittedly a fair bit outside my Top Ten All Time - this is a huge disappointment.

Don't get me wrong; great trailer! But not for a sequel to BGE.

Year switch exclusive or not there is something about this game we haven't been told since ubisoft has been oddly quiet about info they readily gave out for every other game shown today.

I wonder if the reason the game is even called BG&E 2 and not some subtitle is because they knew fans would be upset or the optics would go to much into the negative side. Usually a prequel gets its own subtitle.

I hope I can be the Asian woman with the red dress who had the cd disc in her cleavage, and that I can team up with friends riding around on hoverbikes and exploring space. I would be okay with this.

Yeah, you really can't balance a game for both solo and co-op play. It's either like Destiny where it's just really frustrating/grindy on your own, or it's like Dark Souls where as soon as you summon someone into your game, you just steamroll the game because it wasn't really balanced with co-op in mind. Online is gonna suck if it isn't separate from the single-player. I really hope it is.

Exactly, and I agree.

Of the top of my head, a perfect way for them to separate both but use them both in service of the title:
  • In Singleplayer, have a bunch of clans or groups in the background of the story, X, Y, Z.
  • In Multiplayer, player picks a clan/group, and fights on their behalf.
  • Wins/Losses are tracked in the multiplayer half of the game.
  • Winning faction is featured in references in the single-player portion. They're the enemies you fight in certain sections, they're mentioned more on news reports, etc.
If the multiplayer is more invasive than that, it'll directly effect my hype.

It's not exactly what I had in mind for another BG&E game, but I still have relatively high hopes and in all honesty beggars can't exactly be choosers.

I'm sure I read a rumour last year that there was going to both BG&E2 and a prequel to the first game, maybe there is more to be announced later?

Might have been said already, but a prequel makes sense marketing-wise. It's been a long time since the original, which didn't sell well. A straight sequel is a hard sell. A prequel, not needing to know anything about the original, makes that a lot easier. Although, they might need to get rid of the 2 in the name.

If this sells well, we'll see Jade again I think.

World looks interesting, but the trailer is laden with cliches and "edginess". Kind of an odd feel.

I'm normally irritated that most game trailers don't show you any game play but this one's fantastic. I'd say they look pretty committed to making this a success.

Huuuhhh... online?? I thought it was a single player campaign.
Well.... we will see, but I'll be cautiously optmistic now.
