The agreement, to be filed as an amendment to an Iran sanctions bill, is intended to punish Russia over issues including its alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region and support for the government of Syria in that country's six-year-long civil war. [L1N1J41LS]

The Iran bill is due come up for a vote as soon as this week.

The legislation is backed by both Republicans and Democrats, and is expected to easily pass the Senate.

To become law, the legislation would have to pass the House of Representatives and be signed into law by Trump. If Trump objected, some of its backers said they expected enough congressional support to override a veto.

Edit 2:

@bradjaffy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate overwhelmingly approves new package of sanctions to punish Russia for meddling in 2016 election.

Look at that. Obama tried so hard to have bipartisan cooperation and only a good leader like Trump can inspire such a thing to happen. I'm already getting pretty tired of winning.

Wow I'm shocked the Republican majority would agree to that.

Wait, if Trump HAD lifted Russian sanctions, it would have looked really bad on him.

Which means it would have looked bad for the GOP in the eyes of some moderates.

Never mind, GOP just covering their asses as usual.

Great to see a bipartisan agreement this strongly worded.

That last bullet point has me *really* interested in where that is going.

Russia never took retaliating off the table the last time Obama sanctioned them because Trump told them to hold off and they repeated this threat after Trump was in office as a reminder that they are growing tired of waiting for their reward. This is going to be interesting.

If this doesn't pass the House, we'll know for sure just how deeply the GOP has been compromised. (Does this not have to go through the House?)

I'll be damned. Working across the isle. Who would have thought it could still work? Now to see Trump go nuclear. He's gonna lose his shit so bad.

That last bullet point is interesting. Like the Senate is trying to investigate US/Russian ties (ie Trump) without being overt about it. Trying to do what's necessary without pissing off the base?

What's the catch?

That one jumped out at me as well. Angling for those tax returns.

is the congressional review binding or do they just want an opportunity to vote their disapproval like w/ Obama and the Iran deal

Yeah that last one piqued my interest the most. It sounds potentially wide sweeping.

Interesting timing, with Trump weighing firing Mueller.

I'm not that surprised. Yes, Republicans are assholes who put country before party most of the time, but there are still enough Cold Warriors and their descendants, of both parties, who loathe Russia.

EDIT: And I feel confident they'll override his veto if necessary.

DOUBLE EDIT: Well, unless they just want to cover their asses and deflect suspicions. After the last few months, I never know quite what to think.

I can't help but feel the same. It would be too obvious for them to lift Russian sanctions now during the investigation and it would make them look compromised like Trump and his administration look. They're trying to distance themselves.

Is there support for it or it's just some senators putting forward a bill that will go nowhere?

Considering how old some of the GOP in the congress, they have witnessed the bitterness of the cold war and also the continuous risk of the nuclear war. They know that Russia is significant risk that should not be ignored, or it might be that a broken clock is right twice a day kinda deal. Anyhow, this dampens any plans to lift eh sanctions. I guess their plans with Donald Trump as their puppet have failed for the most part. I don't think they can get much out of him. Maybe some stupid tweet from time to time.
