Senators Announce Agreement on Russia Sanctions

Some choice excerpts...

The agreement, to be filed as an amendment to an Iran sanctions bill, is intended to punish Russia over issues including its alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region and support for the government of Syria in that country's six-year-long civil war. The Iran bill is due come up for a vote as soon as this week.

The legislation is backed by both Republicans and Democrats, and is expected to easily pass the Senate.
To become law, the legislation would have to pass the House of Representatives and be signed into law by Trump. If Trump objected, some of its backers said they expected enough congressional support to override a veto.

Considering how old some of the GOP in the congress, they have witnessed the bitterness of the cold war and also the continuous risk of the nuclear war. They know that Russia is significant risk that should not be ignored, or it might be that a broken clock is right twice a day kinda deal. Anyhow, this dampens any plans to lift eh sanctions. I guess their plans with Donald Trump as their puppet have failed for the most part. I don't think they can get much out of him. Maybe some stupid tweet from time to time.

He's still embarrassing America on the world stage, so it's technically still better than when they expected Hillary to win.

It does say that it's a bi partisan bill so I guess there support for it on both sides. Now it doesn't mean that everyone is aboard.

True, but they only need 48 Democratic + Independent votes, all of whom will support it, and 3 Republicans. I can see McCain, Graham, and the Republicans named above voting for this easily.

Similar in the House: Democrats only need twenty or so Republicans to agree to this, as well.

Well they've turned America into a dangerous joke, so still pretty much a win for them.

Wait, part of an Iran Sanctions Bill?

Thus far Iran has done nothing to warrant further sanctions, or anything to go against the Nuclear deal reached...

Hopefully it's about something else.

Edit:
WaPost has more on it:

...is negotiating a way to pass more stringent sanctions against Russia in the coming week by piggybacking on an upcoming a measure cracking down on ballistic missile tests in Iran.

So are Republicans taking this Russia thing seriously suddenly? Did something happen?

I'm glad they had the guts to fight back in this way. Maybe some GOP scum will see how the tide's turning & flip enough for impeachment after all?

I somehow see Trump signing it all the same.

Not because he wants to but mostly cause he can't read it so everyone around him baiting him to do it like it's a good thing so he can get 3 scoops of ice cream

But Russia is our friend.

Politico notes that the agreement would be viewed as a 'win' for both parties:
The agreement negotiated by Foreign Relations and Banking Committee leaders in both parties, with the involvement of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), allows both parties to claim a measure of victory — delivering a legislative win for McConnell while fulfilling the three basic goals Schumer had outlined for a Russia sanctions measure.

The Russia deal, which McConnell teed up for a key vote on Wednesday, would allow for congressional review of any Trump attempt to waive or ease existing sanctions -- which the White House has floated as a possible incentive in order to win further cooperation on anti-terrorism efforts from Vladimir Putin's government.

He'll have to balance out how Putin & his Russia contacts will view him signing it vs the possibility of it being vetoed and the optics it would put on him.

Uh....that's how many people in the US view Canada as an ally. Unless you're saying we need to worry about Canada taking over the US.
An enemy need not take you over. They can do worse. Much much worse.

Especially when they've been raised on pure evil like bagged milk.

Good. Our government needs to address Russia trying to undermine our entire democracy. Trump ain't gonna do it. He doesn't care.

Pretty sure he's still denying they did it.

Meanwhile US is selling tens of billions of dollars worth of military supplies and hardware to SA, which is supporting ISIS all over the map... People foaming over anything anti-Russia justified as supporting the good side is so pathetic. The politicians are just following their selfish agenda, be it that moron Trump or Hillary Clinton or Putin or Ds or Rs. The scope of these sanctions will just prolong the war in Syria

Look, we can only have one Big Bad per season, it gets too confusing for the viewers otherwise. And Russia leaked e-mails, so clearly they're the one to go with for this season.
