Phil Spencer: "Not a fan of marketing deals with exclusive content"

Not a fan now he can't secure any such deals, sure. Wasn't much complaining on his end when every Fifa (except this year's, by sheer coincidence) had Xbox exclusive content and DLC for games like The Division were, as recently as a few months ago I believe(?) released on Xbox first.

Regardless of hypocrisy and console wars, the man is fucking right. I hated having whole strikes and weapons locked out in Destiny. I won't be buying Destiny 2 partly because of a repeat of this.

I hope more people wised up to Spencer's act. He always says things fanboys like to hear, but his results, if you are keeping tracking, don't keep up with his words.

They've done it in the past, with The Division. But I'm glad they realize this kind of shit is bad for the industry.

Sony's deal with Activision for Destiny is beyond absurd. Holding back content for years, that should be unnaceptable, plain and simple. And seeing it shown during Sony's conference, and people applauding and cheering it.. That was fucked up.

It's a timed exclusive. That's an entirely different subject.
You seriously think that's what happened?

It's near-impossible to get exclusive anything if you're this far behind market leader. If they could arrange it to be so, all the timed exclusives would be full exclusives.

If you think Phil had some kind of moral awakening, you're sadly mistaken

I’m not a fan of doing deals that hold back specific pieces of content from other platforms.
...but I still do it as often as possible because my weenie gets hard thinking about that nominal bump in revenue that might happen

Microsoft still have marketing deals for AAA games in franchises that previously had exclusive content and now don't. That has nothing to do with Sony.
Marketing and exclusive content > marketing in terms of costs.
Exclusive content normally means some form of (timed-)DLC.
Meaning the lower your hardware base, the more money will be missed by the dev, meaning you have to pay more for it.
Ofc they didn't renew the FIFA-Deal when only a fraction of the overall player-base is on the One.

But the article report from Spencer's twitter. SAD
lol

I just looked through the article, and people in the thread have already said what needs to be said. This gen mS may not have gotten much exclusive content but they paid to have a whole game be a timed exclusive, rotr. I would have honestly been okay with it if they did that with a game like Andromeda (not saying that because of the lukewarm reviews) because Mass Effect to me is mostly recognized as an Xbox franchise, but tomb raider?

The whole reason exclusivity was bought was to have competition with Uncharted 4. Except, rotr was always gonna come to Xbone...mS just paid to have it not come to Ps4.

Man, the guy sounds more like Trump the more he opens his mouth. Strangely his fanbase buys into it just like Trump's. Sad.

Good guy Phil, oh wait I'm sure Phil's tried his hardest to get these deals but wasn't willing to pony up the cash with the deficit in sales. That's what he's actually not a fan of. But that money he's saved can go into getting indies to launch on your platform first. Good guy Phil 😂

But paying to keep games off another platform for limited time is ok, right Phil?

Not saying the Destiny situation is ok, because it's not, but this is typical Phil speaking from both sides of his mouth.

And this is after he said there would be less of these deals and more focus on first party. This guy is really starting to rub me the wrong way, he bullshits so much.

While i agree that those deals are not the right way to go about exclusive things on your machine, i dont think Phil or anybody at MS have the right to say so. They clearly liked this kind of thing when it was good for em, the only reason they are saying that now is cause these deals benefict the market leader, and right now thats sony.

Phil and MS PR department should go back to the "good guy" act and be more subtle about this things. All the latest jabs to promote scorpio are making their previous statments about not liking console wars kinda... laughable

Do you REALLY think Microsoft can't afford to "buy" some shitty "exclusive" skin / DLC for big multiplatform games : COD, Destiny, Anthem etc etc ?!!

Exclusive platform shit is bad for us , the gamers. I'll cheer up for anyone who stand up publicly against this shitty behavior.

MS started this trend. Don't like being on the other end of the stick now. Overall it should stop period but, don't pretend MS didn't do this too.

Please, post these results for us since you seem to be keeping track.

I want both positive and negative.

We have insiders saying so, so yes. The bigger the gap between the two consoles, the more expensive it is to secure exclusive content for the console with lesser numbers.

Well that's a fucking riot.

He's not a fan of paid-for platform-exclusive content, as long as it's not literally all the content.
Paying for timed exclusivity is obviously completely fine.
As is systematically using purposefully confusing wording when discussing this pseudo-exclusivity. Wording that is designed to make people think you have more actual exclusives than you really do. That's all fine.

I don't like bought platform-exclusive content either, but Jesus Phil, don't be such a hypocrite.

Lower install base means you have to pay more for content? Do you have any evidence of this?

How are people equating Microsoft securing temporary launch exclusives that last a couple months and 30 days on DLC to Sony routinely making sure they get permanent content exclusivity in games?

And before someone brings up TR, it shitty of MS that they did that, but afaik they haven't repeated that since.

I don't think Sony is gonna stop anytime soon with ensuring Xbox players pay the same for less content. It's bullshit.

Sounds like Phil has caught Mattrick Disease.

Don't get me wrong, he deserves credit for walking into a shitty situation after Mattrick and shifting focus to right the ship but since then he's just become the same smug mouthpiece that Mattrick was.

Phil doesn't like paying for exclusive content deals yet he was a higher up in the Xbox management hierarchy (GM of Microsoft Studios) back when Microsoft threw bags of cash at Activision for COD exclusive DLC. Did he object then? Doubtful.

His comment is as transparent as glass. He doesn't like exclusive content deals when they don't benefit Xbox. He could give a flying shit about whether it's good or bad for gamers, he only cares if it's good or bad for Xbox.

Maybe I'm misinformed but the only game I know that fits this description is Destiny. The issue there is with Bungie more than Sony. Sony paid for timed exclusivity and got it, Bungie is the one who decided to drag their feet on things once the timed period ended.

As for being bullshit, all multiplat content exclusivity is bullshit, and I include preorder bonus nonsense in that list. But Sony doing it is no more or less bullshit than when Microsoft started the practice.

"Here at Microsoft we have a chuckle around the water cooler at holding back a piece of content or two, no, here at Microsoft we aim to hold back whole games from fans"

It's really really hard to take him seriously now that the xbox brand is so damaged they can NOT get these kind of deals for meaningful games.

When they had the upper hand, they kept doing that shit left and right.

Maybe he is sincere. But that's exactly like the boy that cried wolf.

Strange comment when your conference was basically this:

"Console launch exclusive!"
"Console launch exclusive!"
"Console launch exclusive!"
"Console launch exclusive!"
"Console launch exclusive!"

(Repeat that about 15 more times.)

Can't he "not" like something but still have to do it to keep up with everyone else...Sony is making these fucking deals left, right and center...publishers and developers can't resist them so what the fuck is MS supposed to do? They are getting trounced in the market and mind share.

Jesus Christ. I hate taking the freeway to work, but I fucking have to because I don't want Joe Dickhead to get a raise for being there 10 minutes earlier than me every day...Give me a break with all this black and white witch hunt shit. Everything has gray areas.

Rational GAF.

Guess you weren't around last gen. Spoiler
they invented this shit

Based on their E3 conference, he seems to be a fan of timed exclusive games though, and it's not like Microsoft didn't do a plenty of marketing deals with exclusive content last gen.

EDIT:
Hasn't MS done this themselves though? Multiple times?

So is he saying that he wants to put an end to it on both sides?

Seems like he wants it to end now that they're not a market leader, who can make these kind of deals more easily. If the tables ever get turned, I imagine the tone will change back to what it was.
