Female only gaming event cancelled following online harassment

It's pretty "impressive" in a way, computer science was seen as the lesser branch of mathematic and automation and there was a lot of women working there.
and gradually the split went boys club with the advent of video games it seems.
And you're absolutely right about the role of advertisement in the schema here.
Boys can be and do everything while girls are left with pretty much just dolls and things to do with houses.
Pretty depressing.

To be fair, IT is a hard field for women so the ones that stay are usually the more resilient and by default are actually better students since they're already so resilient that they won't quit.
for men, it's easy there's no pressure inside the group to make them leave the group so they only have to make do with the courses.
Personally I could have done with a more even split seeing the kind of shitheads you sometimes have to do with...

jeuxvideos.com 12-25.
Yeah you won't see me shitting on Spain for that.

Don't tell me about it it's a shame I had to drop out after the death of my father because at the time I felt like less capable than the guy never showing up to classes or that were always high never listening and playing peggle on its computer. He made me so mad when He said he just had 8 exams to redo.
Even more When there was this girl always first trying her best but he was a jerk to her sometimes you just have to wonder why assholes are more resilient.

As for ads for girls it reminds me that video about this young girl screaming in a girl toys alley wondering why everything was pink and boys had almost all the other colors to play with. That what the indusrty create for girls only pink dolls to be a "girly" girl and nothing too complicated... that's depressing

Why would you cancel the event just for being harassed online? The biggest insult you can give to harassers is actually pushing through with the event.

Like a bully situation, unless you stand up for it, it ain't gonna stop.

I supposed that depends on context of the harassment.

It likely went beyond them being called certain four or five letter words if they canceled it.

As a Black person, I know how toxic gaming spaces can be so I can empathize with women having their own space and not have to worry about harassment.

The gaming community has a lot of work to do when it comes to being more inclusive. And for people to say to these women to suck it up, imagine holding your arms outstretched with 10-pound weights in each arm, it doesn't matter how strong you are, eventually, you will tire and have to put the weights down. Some people need to understand the basic concept of getting tired of shit like this.

Events like this exist because swaths of the community aren't open to women and minorities.

I'm just sad.

"Mens only" events happen already. They're just not named as such because, well... let's take a look at E3.

Finding ONE woman quickly turns into a Where's Waldo game

When generations upon generations upon generations of humans are taught that women are inferior and should be controlled, that people with dark skin have a high chance of being a criminal, that poor people are where they're at cuz they put themselves there and deserve it, you get a breed of humans that harbor some deep seeded toxic beliefs that they latch to like it's the gospel.

"I'm not the enemy! You just don't know how the real world works! You need to stay in your lane! Just cooperate and we can all get along!"

Yeah but now we have proof it's wrong how can you cling so hard to your belief that you can discharge every evidence preseted upon you.
I get that some roots are hard to pull out but evidences should be the shovel to help you not some elusive truth unreachable by a clouded brain.

Maybe the organizers didn't feel like it was responsible to subject people to the level of harassment levied at them.

It's easy to say "just take it" when it's not you

Maybe they didn't plan such stupidity and had not enough time to ensure security?

If shit had popped off and they had obvious signs of harassment or escalation before hand and they didn't take precautionary measures they could be liable. Further more the safety of the women is above all else.

Its not as simple as "stand up to the bullies doe!!111!"

Sorry for your loss.
One thing I can say about computer related studies, it's like Math but easier.
If there's any justice that asshole will get what's coming to him when in the workforce :/

What's even more rage inducing are the shitheels who go about traditional values about how girls should be in pink and men in blue and how genders need to be rigidly enforced EVERYWHERE or society is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

So cooking and sewing are girl stuffs, BUT if you go highlevel and into fashion or professional cooking then it's a men's world again because fuck women trying to make a living amirite?

Forocoches is the absolute lowest of the low, a cesspool of festering fly-covered matter. It is widely known for its openly racist, sexist and homophobic community. Seriously, it makes 4chan seem like a left-wing version of NeoGAF.

As I mentioned in other threads, Spain is a pretty backwards country regarding social issues, as befitting a country who has been ruled by a right wing military dictatorship for the earier 40 of the last 80 years. Machismo and testosterone still rule rampant among men, and feminists are casually demonized by pretty much everyone including women.

I know it's not particularly popular to point at any guilty parties other than "gaming culture", but believe me, if Forocoches caught wind of any kind of event at all that only women could attend, you would see the exact same responses. But I'm pretty sure forum responses is all you'd see, because the iberic macho is 90% talk; I'm pretty sure none of those subhuman losers would have the guts to show their faces there, let alone try to start any trouble. Hell, I would be surprised at any of them taking any kind of action that would require their chairs.

Exactly And yeah the stupid color code for guys and girls infuriates me

Women being in an environment with other like minded women that supports women to get together and share their love of gaming.
You don't need to segregate women to do that (support women and their love of gaming that is). Should the goal not be to encourage everyone to interact with each other in a groovy manner? Barring people from this kind of event based on gender won't do much for that.

Sometimes women just want a space to themselves? Without having to worry about harassment from male gamers as well as to network with each other.
Wanting a space to themselves is all good and well but for the purposes of discussing gender it seems kind of backwards to shut the flip side of the coin out. It feels like a more productive way to go about it would be to allow anyone to attend the event while still celebrating women in gaming and encouraging interaction amongst everyone.

Long story short: there's a correlation between misogyny and violent tendencies. This is scientific, but I think all women already know it inherently. It's not just bullying.

Pathological misogyny isn't a "haha, I'm going to tell the principal on you" kind of thing. It's a "holy shit, he could actually kill me if I bruise his ego" kind of thing.

imagine citing colin moriarty, someone who sends signed copies of his ~famous~ mysoginst tweet, as a source regarding anything about women

or even on anything. dude is dumb as fuck

invoking the Civil Rights Act, THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT, to complain about ladies nights...

just gross at every level

like it's the most white dude thing to do. it would be funny if people didn't legitimately look to him as some kind of authority

I understand that but shouldn't such an event have guards?

Still, if it endangers the people physically then cancelling the event should be the right choice.

It's just that I mistakenly thought that an event where certain genders are prohibited would elicit having security officers on site.

I understand now though.

It feels that way to you because you're a dude

It's ok for a group of harassed people to be by themselves for a while

Because the first rule of change is to admit that you were brought up by a system that gives you privileges over a lot of people. And that's hard. Really hard. Some people can't handle the truth.

I doubt those who were having an issue with the event were going to go in the first place even if they could. So why complain? Doesn't make sense to me, but that's just me.

Male fragility, just the thought of there being an event like this is enough to get them riled up. Because god forbid a group of women do something that don't also involve a group of men. :| It's not enough that the culture is already male dominated.

And there are plenty of avenues for that already, this was supposed to be a woman only event tho. Just like a black only event isn't for the sole purpose of educating or involving white people a woman only event isn't for the sole purpose of educating or involving men. Like if my partner goes out with her friends as a group of women only, what right do I have to impede on that? The same logic applies her but on a larger scale.

The fact of the matter is women deserve a place they can converse with other women about their experiences.

It would be nice to say everything is a zero sum game and all men and women should be equal, but equality right now does not exist because society can be shit to women, people of color and religious minorities by default. White christian men are the highest tier on the ladder in America and that's just how it is. Everyone else fights for representation and fair treatment.

Just like the Wonder Woman screening, whiny little men have to try and ruin something that doesn't favor them. So tired of seeing all these babies complain about PC culture yet when they're not included they throw tantrums like the manchildren they are.

What is with this assumption that having a ladies night or what have you is because they want to educate people?

They just want a break lmao

Segregation has a very specific context and meaning. I really dislike when that word is used when minorities hold private events because there isn't any systematic power behind a meeting of the marginalized in most cases unless it's to counter the imbalance.

Sometimes it's nice to go to an event and not have to explain yourself or get potentially harassed. It's a reprieve. Why can't women and minorities have events, to give us that break without people bringing up segregation or it not being conducive?

These events are empowerment. An Avenue where a women who has deal with gaming harassment to let her hair down.

I can't believe how fragile the male ego is. *Everything* is treated as an attack. It results so much violence and aggression. No one is allowed to call them on their behavior or their bullshit.

Even someone wanting to be interested in similar things have to prove themselves or they're treated as an enemy.

Depends. Most networking events I have gone to don't have guards. But if there is alcohol a lot of the time they do. Maybe they just figured cancel and prepare better next time? Who knows? I'm just saying that I get why sometimes logistics just say cancel if there are unforeseen safety concerns.

When I was in college and attended Black-only/focus event it wasn't so we could strategize about how to communicate with our white peers. We wanted to watch Scandal and have a good time with people that understood each other.

"You may be interested in games but are you a truegamer™?! or just a poser like those stupid bros?" /s It's just SO goddamn cringeworthy.

It's just an excuse to justify the abuse or try to delegitimise the need for the event. No one really thinks this should be an educational experience for men, it's just an excuse

...how? What exactly does that accomplish that can't be accomplished in a mixed setting?

For one they won't have to have this conversation over and over. When women attend a women-only event themed around women's issues, discrimination, etc there are no idiotic men there to constantly ask "why is this event needed?" because all the women there have a mutual understanding of why the event is important in the first place. Also, when a woman speaker says "feminism" she won't have an idiotic chorus of men try to derail her speech with "feminism is just discrimination towards men" or "why is feminism needed at all?" Affinity groups share a body of knowledge, values, and beliefs that those shared understandings helps push the conversation forward. For example, when a woman describes harassment to a group of other women who have shared her experiences she will receive support and validation and not...again idiotic men saying "well, I'm not sure gender had anything to do with it, people are just assholes" or "that happens to men too!"

Yeah I'm just saying that prohibiting men will only agravated the most stupid males while preventing the more open minded to be able to be informed if only the panel were women only that would've been great the event being it too kinda moot their point.

Can't we all just think of the men? Some will get real mad and some will get sad! Can't women see how unreasonable they are by doing this?!

Dude, the real good guys will understand and respect the purpose and the necessity of this events. And they are smart enough to know that there are other ways to further inform themselves about women in gaming.

Well to be fair it would be pretty shitty if I couldn't attend the event just because I'm a man and more importantly I would love to hear more about women in the video games industry.

If you wanna support this kind of initiative then do so by respecting their wishes. There are plenty of ways to show support and engage in discussions with women about gaming outside of this kind of event.

What a bunch of shitbags.

That said do people never notice that the woman in the we can do it poster (which the op pic references) is rolling up her sleeve?

I'm just disapointed I couldn't attend this with my girlfriend she's a gamer too but she wouldn't go there alone so it may in some forms penalize women too but seeing how stupid some people were I get it now.
I used to think they were just jealous which I can understand but no they were just plain stupid and misogynistic.
