Female only gaming event cancelled following online harassment

Does a private event count as a "space open to the public"? This reads like it's talking about general public access to businesses, not private events.

That's exactly what the law is referring to. The original poster needs to get a refund on his law degree apparently.

The one thing I don't understand is why those man act like that and why a lot of gamers do too.

Are we (human) so bad inside that just the gender of a person can cause that much hate ?

I'm not even talking about beliefs or race or sexual preference which are usually driven by ignorance, but those guys may know a lot of women competent, smart and everything why wouldn't they be able to have their event ?

How do you become like that ?

Even the color of the skin is enough to generate a copious amount of hatred, gender?
pfft of course it's enough.
In Spain specifically, you have supporters of football teams throwing bananas and stuff at players of their own team because they are a little more brown than they would like.
Seriously how is that even a question worth asking?

There's a ton of sexism and toxicity towards women in the world, with greater concentrations in specific spaces like gaming. I'm not sure that women-only events is the way to fight this.

Online harassment from guys like this is frankly enough to begin with, but I'll play along anyway:

Verbal and physical harassment towards women happens at gaming events. It might not be incredibly widespread but it's common enough to warrent things like this.

Of course it happens I remember when I was at the PGW they had some booth workers in cosplay (doing cosplay ?) (this time I got it guys) so some guys wanted to take pictures with them so far nothing too bad but there a difference between a simple picture with cosplayers and groping.

And one of my friend had some family problems with its sister in the same category (sensitive subject I'll stay vague) So he went mad and punch those pricks either it becomes a bit confusing but after that we got to talk with those booth workers (for those wondering it was chun li and crimson viper) And they told us it happens all the times and sometimes it's worse.

Either way the later year I know a lot of female cosplayers stayed near booth with security guard and people that can defend them just in case.

So yeah it happens and apparently a lot.

Women don't need to pass the sudden and arbitrary political tests of men to hang out and network among ourselves.

Well I didn't know it was that bad in Spain I thought they were more open minded.

As I mentionned way earlier racism is often linked to ignorance as I said One of my uncle was racist mostly because he never met an arabic guy and it just took one fortunate meeting with one (who helped him change a tire on the side of a road) to change its mind and now he is way more open minded about it.

I know but someone asked what would the reaction be if there was such an event.

A double standard requires a comparison in which both entities are equal. Women in gaming compared to men in gaming are not equal concepts. So the fact that the reaction to an all male gaming event would be "you fucking serious, we can't even share the hobby with the few women that can even tolerate this environment" doesn't mean there is a double standard occuring. Don't do this dumb false equivalency.

It's not about fighting, it's about having a safe space for once from the kind of assholes who got the event cancelled anyway because they're fucking babies.

It's similar in Italy too,
the only reason it doesn't happen in France is that our football teams suck balls.

Alright I gotta admit it was funny but I never really experienced it since I'm not into football at all I was more of a basket ball guy and never witness such racism (although there definitely
stil is in France example lmp, Fn and others)

Trust me I know all about discrimination so cut the condescending rubbish please.

All I'm saying is there'd be uproar if a "Men only" gaming event was organised, that's all.

\o/

"All I'm saying is there'd be uproar if a "White History Month" was organized, that's all!"

Or he could think that he met 'one of the good ones'™, it's a lucky break that your uncle wised up.
As for sexism, I don't think for one second that France is that above the fray at all.
Not a year ago we had a minister of the Republic who thought it was appropriate to touch women panties in meetings with journalists and stuff.

Really? Damn I missed that but to be fair if there is one thing that hasn't evolved in France it's our politics I feel like I see the same heads since I was born.

Anyway back on topic I think sometime even subconciously there is sexism I mentionned earlier too when my mother and sister worked in a support IT company and signing their mail was often problematic (even with my mother that has a name that is unisexe) sometime the client doesn't do what you tell him to do or disregard your competence but when they change their signature with something like patrick or roger boom suddenly everything worked.

The macho sexists/racists idiots only for the more popular sports,
rugby is big but have a welcoming environment (mabe not if you're gay though).
The assholes are really in football though

Mchel Sapin.
He's a Leftist from PS.
And before anyone go all notruescotsman on me, we have similar incidents ranging from the extreme left to extreme right.
Politicians are shit, all of them.

To be fair aside from Macron, they're all old farts or families of the old farts from the 80's and up.
If you think they're always the same, there may be a good reason for that.

I'll never get sexism in computer science, most of my teachers in compsci were women and they were incredibly competent too.
I've got project leads who are women too and they're not more or less competent than their counterparts.
for anything to do with computers sexism makes no sence.

People shitting up threads like this get progressively dumber I feel.
Seems like they're not even sending their best anymore, sad!

It's pretty disgusting behaviour.

But to play devil's advocate, I'd like to see the reaction if a "Male only" gaming event was organised.

This again. There doesn't need to be a male only gaming event because that's essentially what they are and have been forever. Do you also ask about the reaction if there was a "White History Month"?

I'm not sure why this always has to be explained but events like this are important because, like in most forms of media, women are underrepresented and often treated like shit and trolled by d-bags because "lol women think they can game they should be in the kitchen making me a sandwich." Case in point: the link in this thread.

So if there's a female gaming event, the natural response should be, "Great. Women should have something that allows them to feel comfortable and part of the community." The alternative is they can show up to a typical LAN party and you'd have to be an idiot or in denial to question why they wouldn't want to do that.

This shit should not be that complicated to understand but there is a certain level of thought that's required here that goes beyond, "I wonder what the reaction would be if men..." I don't know how to explain that part of it any more than I did above. If you can't escape that frame of mind and insist on making this about some misguided, strict adherence to total "equality", you're lost.

Mchel Sapin.

My cousin's gay and played some rugby never had a problem maybe he was lucky I don't know though I don't remeber if he was openly gay at that times...

Wow sa sent le sapin pour michel without even counting the money stolen.

Bunch of dumb nerds. I hate gaming so much sometimes, I need to get into miniature trains or whatever :( And in España? I thought this was mostly an English-speaking problem. At least in Mexico we have girls-only tournaments, and I don't recall this kind of backlash...

Again rugby is very welcoming so I think if they would have a prejudice it would be that...or not. Outside of that it's not environment that foster stuff like the usual racist behavior you see in football.

I missed that, apparently he was condemned to give back the money...
Really a shithead, won't be missed.

Women are ridiculously underrepresented in the gaming sphere. The extent of it would almost be comical if it wasn't straight up shameful. They are also endlessly harassed for being a part of said sphere. Why wouldn't they want to celebrate their hobby in a gender-exclusive event? It would seemingly* be the rare safe space in which to exchange their enthusiasm for the hobby.

*lolyeahright, said the assholes

I wish they didn't cancel the event, there should be more of these and wherever there is demand. Don't let the losers win.

That may sound strange but humor me a bit.

I think a lot of women are discouraged from studying in IT because of the toys and ads they get when they're younger.

Look at the ads this christmas and spot the number of toys electronical or video games like for boys and for girls.

Publicist still don't see video games or IT as "girly"
I think it will change as newer and newer generations don't care about Tv and spend more time on internet but damn when I was younger whe had so much video games ads when girl's targeted ads there were dolls and mini kitchen and things like that.

As I said again earlier I studied IT and one of the girl had to drop out because of some boys and loneliness it's easy to calculate we were about a 100 and there were 7 girls. The worst thing is that she was so fucking good always first in every subject.I gotta admit I was jealous of her talent.

"Women in MY hobby?! No way! They have, like, these girl bacterias on them and stuff, yuck!"

I can comprehend this fucking shit, seriously. Hopefully this mentality will go down with the future generations.

Raise your children so that they don't become sexist pieces of shit, people.

that's just a symptom of the problem

that's just a symptom of the problem

yeah of course but it's like the ouroboros TV keeps girls away from IT then when publicist want to see if there a market they think girls don't care about IT so they don't commercialized It things for girls which then don't care about it then ...

It's schematized drastically but that may be a cause too

It's pretty "impressive" in a way, computer science was seen as the lesser branch of mathematic and automation and there was a lot of women working there.
and gradually the split went boys club with the advent of video games it seems.
And you're absolutely right about the role of advertisement in the schema here.
Boys can be and do everything while girls are left with pretty much just dolls and things to do with houses.
Pretty depressing.

To be fair, IT is a hard field for women so the ones that stay are usually the more resilient and by default are actually better students since they're already so resilient that they won't quit.
for men, it's easy there's no pressure inside the group to make them leave the group so they only have to make do with the courses.
Personally I could have done with a more even split seeing the kind of shitheads you sometimes have to do with...

Spain must be a shit country.
jeuxvideos.com 12-25.
Yeah you won't see me shitting on Spain for that.

Women have the right to a female oriented event to converse and mingle with other female gamers. I don't see what is so controversial about that? Why are they not allowed that?

Before someone tries to say "well how come there are no men only events!? Girls would get pissed about that right??"

Feminism means that women get more social rights than men, because they are historically a persecuted group by definition, no matter what country your in. If your starting from behind, it makes sense to give different standards in acceptability.

Men don't need their own 'safe space' events to get together, because they have privilege that allows them to get together without fears of harassment.

When generations upon generations upon generations of humans are taught that women are inferior and should be controlled, that people with dark skin have a high chance of being a criminal, that poor people are where they're at cuz they put themselves there and deserve it, you get a breed of humans that harbor some deep seeded toxic beliefs that they latch to like it's the gospel.

"I'm not the enemy! You just don't know how the real world works! You need to stay in your lane! Just cooperate and we can all get along!"

Why would you cancel the event just for being harassed online? The biggest insult you can give to harassers is actually pushing through with the event.

Like a bully situation, unless you stand up for it, it ain't gonna stop.

Let me tell you about the immorality of charging women less for drinks on some nights at bars...

.

This only serves as further proof for the necessity of female only events. These "men" are disgusting and I sure has hell wouldn't want them at an event on gender issues of any kind.
...how? What exactly does that accomplish that can't be accomplished in a mixed setting?

Because they were planning to actually go to the event to harass the attendees. Which could get out of hand VERY fast considering the kind of sociopaths that would go through with that.

Sometimes women just want a space to themselves? Without having to worry about harassment from male gamers as well as to network with each other.
