No one's "worked up." The reason the OP and subsequent replies is long is because some seem to have a hard time grasping the fact that aesthetics matter to us, and bad aesthetics ruin the overall experience of using the Switch system.this is
my issue isn't a lack of empathy, it's just that this is *such* a non issue that even this level of reply is weird. calling an icon obnoxious because you don't like the design is super weird. it's an icon. if it's enough for you to have ruined your enjoyment of a game then delete it.
if an icon was offensive or misleading i would understand someone being upset, but getting this worked up because it ruins an aesthetic?
I don't have a hard time grasping that aesthetics matter, I have a hard time grasping why someone would place aesthetics before the actual game. Or at least on a similar level to where an icon would affect *anything*No one's worked up. In this case, it's an obnoxious image that dominates the home menu, a home menu I visit frequently for reasons described. It'd be one thing if it was always this way. But it used to be great, until they patched it to be terrible.
So yeah. Also, I actually really love this game! Another thing I immediately established in the OP. Trust me, this wouldn't bother me one bit if I didn't want to keep this game in rotation.
I mean, I explained this. I'll spare us a repeat.I don't have a hard time grasping that aesthetics matter, I have a hard time grasping why someone would place aesthetics before the actual game. Or at least on a similar level to where an icon would affect *anything*
Also you bar for obnoxiousness must be very low if you find that obnoxious

Well yeah, when the obnoxious image drags down the overall presentation of the system, I feel less inclined to engage with the game itself.I'm pretty sure most people get that. I can understand being upset at perceived lack of aesthetics. I think what most people are reacting to is the statement that the change makes him not want to play the game. Honestly I find that baffling. If I love a game, a book, a song, a movie or any piece of media the cover image in no way is going to affect my desire to use / play my media. It might offend me aesthetically, but would have no impact on the media itself.
thank you!I mean, I explained this. I'll spare us a repeat.
Instead I'll say you have a cool username!

Aesthetics are an incredibly important part of gaming ever since Pong came in a space age-looking arcade cabinet. If it wasn't important we'd never see "Worst Character Design" threads and Persona 5 wouldn't have used its snazzy UI as a selling point. If something is seen often whilst being aesthetically bad to the viewer it's going to affect people's enjoyment of the game it's in. Trying to dismiss the thread because you personally don't see the issue is, as I implied above, attempting to remove the importance of aesthetics in the visual medium of games entirely.
It's still a part of the overall console experience. It's an image you look at repeatedly every time you go through the home menu on powering up, shutting down, changing games, checking screenshots, checking the time, checking the battery, changing controllers, etc.We aint talking about the visual importance of games. We talking about an icon on a menu of a plastic box.
Beautiful, hahaI cannot be the only one enjoying the irony that people look at this thread, find it a frivolous thing to complain about, then click "reply" to complain about that.

Yep. A perfect example of the difference a UI makes is the Switch vs. the WiiU. The WiiU's home menu was a clusterfuck of Miis and floating icons. I didn't like to look at it, and I especially detested how it always showed the icons for games I didn't own or care about, including shovelware. And? If one views the Snake Pass icon as often as they might view, say, Persona 5's UI why is one "OK" to discuss whilst the other is not? Does pressing the home button suddenly mitigate any and all potential offense one could have at bad aesthetics?
Tech companies wouldn't invest millions into UI design if people only saw things as "icons on a menu of a plastic box."
Tweeting this to sumo lolNope, but it was on the leaked docs.

Also, now that I read it again, it's not required, but heavily recommended.
lol, I'm glad I'm not alone in caring about these icons. There are some horrid ones on PS4 like Persona 5 and The Witness.
I haven't gotten around to Persona 5 yet, but is it true it has a lame icon? That'd surprise me, since the rest of the game's visual design seems on point.
I really dislike it especially since the box art is so fantastic.I haven't gotten around to Persona 5 yet, but is it true it has a lame icon? That would surprise me, since the rest of the visual design seems on point.

Do you have a screenshot of what is below the text at the bottom?

I kind of want them do double down on the cheap look and make a new icon using only 90's stock clipart.
Cause everything else there follows the guideline suggestion. As mentioned Snake Pass' new icon is more akin to a mobile icon, big simple design meant for much smaller display size.it does look strangely out of place
Haha damn beat me to it, it really is a perfect example though.
The NSMBU example icon in Nintendo's dev guidelines is beautiful.
I'd buy a Switch port just for that icon. :-3
Well, OK, I also like the game itself (NSMBU). But that example icon is also ace!Surely this is hyperbole, right? Do you think badge center is coming to switch?
don't tread on my icons![]()
I agree! Original icon was better!
So you went from "must include" which isn't the case to "heavily"(which isn't the case) recommended???
lol.
Yeah, Nintendo very explicitly says that the simple icons are not good for Switch. Which is why I wonder: Why did Sumo get it right the first time, but then patch it to make it wrong? It actually is the case, because in that screenshot I actually see three different places where Nintendo says it is not recommended to do that, one of them is in bold and all capital letters, and there's even visual image examples of what to do VS what not to do.
So while it's not "must include" which the original poster redacted after finding the image, but is IS very blatantly obvious that they heavily discourage the exact type of icon that Snake Pass now has. It's right there, three times, once in bolded all caps, I don't know how it can be any clearer.
Edit: To avoid confusion, the third time is at the bottom, where they are going to give yet another visual example of why they do not recommend using a simple icon, but the image is cut off.

I really do wonder what their reasoning was there. Maybe some sort of focus test logic?
I want to know why they're so adamant about keeping the new icon.
Any recommendations? I don't like fighting games, so I wouldn't get any of those.Someone doesn't buy Neo Geo games![]()

this is a level of nitpicking i didn't think was possible.

This fucking bullshit goes deep. It goes deep you hear me?
Sumo is covering up something big here. Something fucking BIG.
you know maybe that's why i just don't care about thisSomeone doesn't buy Neo Geo games![]()
Shock Troopers is a great overhead shooter with option for co-op and Neo Turf Masters is the GOAT golf game.
