John McCain has Brain Cancer

Damn, that really fucking sucks, and he has my sympathy and well wishes.

With that said, thanks to his government provided health insurance, he will have access to the best possible treatments he can get to make whatever time he has left as comfortable as possible.

I think it's understandable for people to be of two minds. It's not absurd to not wish this type of thing on anybody, but to also understand the kind of irony of a man diagnosed with brain cancer denying millions of Americans the type of health care he himself benefits from due to his position and job.

This is 100% an awful thing to happen to McCain. He's fortunate that he is able to get the treatment he is able to get, even if, ultimately, it doesn't save his life. I wish he could have extended his own empathy to other Americans suffering from cancer, and any number of horrible diseases and pre-existing conditions.

I'm not going to feel bad for being perturbed about the state of Health Insurance, but I also won't refrain from wishing him and his loved ones the best during this horrible ordeal. Fucking cancer. It truly is the worst, and I've certainly lost more than a few loved ones to it.

"That sucks"
"Republicans are subhuman, he deserves it"
"Wait, what"

Thread in a nutshell.

More like:

"My prayers and thoughts for him."
"Fuck McCain"
"Why are you guys saying he deserves to have cancer?!"
"I meant fuck him regardless of his sickness, not because he has-"
"WAR HERO!!!"

To be fair this is the 3rd or 4th thread about McCain's health. The subject has spilled into each thread continuing from the last.

A lot of people in this thread need to learn you can say "Fuck cancer" and "Fuck John McCain" at the same time. In fact, the best response I can come up with is "cancer fucking sucks and I hope John McCain quickly beats it into remission, and that the experience of what modern medical science can do for you when you have the means to afford it helps him stop being a giant flaming pile of shit."

Given his past track record as a giant flaming pile of shit, however, I doubt that will come to pass. The best I can hope for without being a total asshole is that he overcomes it quickly so I can go back to hating him remorse free, because none of the other near death experiences he's gone through have ever done anything beyond turning him into an even greater asshole. Private life, professional life, doesn't matter, if that article is any indication, he's short on redeemable qualities.

Again, fuck cancer, but fuck John McCain. Here's the opening of the article that I linked and, as I am probably unqualified to assault the record of a "war hero", what a fellow Hanoi prisoner had to say about him:

It's the spring of 1974, and Navy commander John Sidney McCain III has returned home from the experience in Hanoi that, according to legend, transformed him from a callow and reckless youth into a serious man of patriotism and purpose. Walking along the grounds at Fort McNair, McCain runs into John Dramesi, an Air Force lieutenant colonel who was also imprisoned and tortured in Vietnam.

McCain is studying at the National War College, a prestigious graduate program he had to pull strings with the Secretary of the Navy to get into. Dramesi is enrolled, on his own merit, at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in the building next door.

There's a distance between the two men that belies their shared experience in North Vietnam — call it an honor gap. Like many American POWs, McCain broke down under torture and offered a "confession" to his North Vietnamese captors. Dramesi, in contrast, attempted two daring escapes. For the second he was brutalized for a month with daily torture sessions that nearly killed him. His partner in the escape, Lt. Col. Ed Atterberry, didn't survive the mistreatment. But Dramesi never said a disloyal word, and for his heroism was awarded two Air Force Crosses, one of the service's highest distinctions. McCain would later hail him as "one of the toughest guys I've ever met."

On the grounds between the two brick colleges, the chitchat between the scion of four-star admirals and the son of a prizefighter turns to their academic travels; both colleges sponsor a trip abroad for young officers to network with military and political leaders in a distant corner of the globe.

"I'm going to the Middle East," Dramesi says. "Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran."

"Why are you going to the Middle East?" McCain asks, dismissively.

"It's a place we're probably going to have some problems," Dramesi says.

"Why? Where are you going to, John?"

"Oh, I'm going to Rio."

"What the hell are you going to Rio for?"

McCain, a married father of three, shrugs.

"I got a better chance of getting laid."

Dramesi, who went on to serve as chief war planner for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and commander of a wing of the Strategic Air Command, was not surprised. "McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man," Dramesi says today. "But he's still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in."

@jessica_roy
My friend's husband died of glioblastoma in AZ. They wrote a letter to McCain begging for his help. He advised them to move.

Don't know or care if the update was posted here already, popping in one last time to this thread to post it. Peace:

Since I can't sleep, you need to know this is absolutely true.
Tashi wrote about the letter in short on Facebook yesterday. Painful.
She made the post public so that people could share it, so I'm posting it here as well.
You can read their story, here: https://t.co/HS6NexidxX

I don't doubt her at all but does the article or the post have any proof of McCain's actual letter?

Read the article I linked. He abused his father's status to remain in the Navy even after crashing multiple planes or deviating from flight plans to go on a joyride, including one where he clipped a powerline and caused a blackout. Even though his flight record was abysmal, he leaned on the undersecretary of the Navy to get him into a VIetnam combat role, where he was posted to the USS Forrestal. After escaping the fire on the deck of the Forrestal, he hung out in the ready room while the ship burned, rather than help fight the fire, more worried about his career than his fellow soldiers. ("This distressed me considerably," he recalls in Faith of My Fathers. "I feared my ambitions were among the casualties in the calamity that had claimed the Forrestal.") He left the ship to party in Saigon while it limped into port. I'd probably crack under torture too, so I'm not going to fault him for what he did while imprisoned, but his misogyny, his rampant adultery (he repeatedly cheated on his first, injured wife Carol while at his command post in Jacksonville, "even though adultery is a court-martial offense"), and his willingness to accept massive campaign bribes are easy to vilify.

On that campaign bribe bit, we can then switch over from how shitty of a person he is to how many lives he's helped ruin, starting with his association with Charlie Keating, "the banker and anti-pornography crusader", who "would ultimately be convicted on 73 counts of fraud and racketeering for his role in the savings-and-loan scandal of the 1980s." McCain was part of the Keating Five, a group of Senators who used their influence to get regulators off of the back of Keating's Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which allowed it to eventually collapse, wiping out the savings of 25,000 people and leaving taxpayers on the hook for $3.4B in 1989 dollars. For his support, Keating donated $100,000 to McCain's senate race, flew him and his wife Cindy on nine free trips, vacationed him at "Keating's Shangri-La," his private estate in the Bahamas, and helped Cindy invest in a property deal to the tune of $350,000 that promised a return of 26%. He was given a slap on the wrist by the ethics committee for "poor judgment" and Cindy's dealings were never investigated.

During that time, he also "cites as his "biggest" legislative victory of that era a 1989 bill that abolished catastrophic health insurance for seniors, a move he still cheers as the first-ever repeal of a federal entitlement program." Some other highlights include:

  • Opposed the new GI bill
  • Helped cut healthcare for 3.4 million kids
  • Voted to abolish the federal minimum wage
  • Championed the deregulation efforts that helped cause our latest financial crisis

And a bunch more of other fun stuff that you're free to read into yourself. Keep in mind this was written in 2008, so it doesn't even mention his current efforts to cut off healthcare to millions of people, as that one is a recent development.

So, you're right. I picked a bad quote to make my point. These ones are much better.

The last I'll say is the first thing I said. Fuck cancer. Fuck John McCain.

The vietnam thing is a bit of a cul de sac, but christ McCain sure did like crashing fighters. 3 documented peacetime crashes, which would have seen most folk drummed out.

Cornyn says they are trying to get doctor approval for McCain to come back tomorrow for healthcare vote (!)

That would be something if he comes back to vote to repeal Obamacare.

This is disgusting. Let him be, don't fly a dying old man half way across the country for a vote that doesn't even matter (they have more than 2 nos)

His great taxpayer funded healthcare allows him to come back to vote against healthcare.

How ironic.

If he actually comes back, after being diagnosed with brain cancer, just to vote to repeal healthcare for everyone else, I have no regrets in saying he can burn in hell.

When he does, and votes against saving lives, I'm coming back in this thread and quoting each of my justified posts

I've always respected McCain even if I didn't always agree with him. He never seemed petty...

... like this guy

I don't know, vowing to obstruct anything and everyone that the first black president tries to accomplish and then following that up by vowing to dismantle every piece of legislation he put his hands regardless of the negative impact it will have, simply because it plays well with your racist base (and because he kicked your ass in the general election) seems pretty fucking petty me.

Dude made it his life's work to obstruct progress and ruin lives. If tacky and petty is the worst you can say about his critics right now, they're still better than him.
