Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor fight finalized for Aug. 26 - It's on!

Getting KO'd in sparring is very common.

Or atleast the rumours are very common. No way to tell if any of them are true due to the embarrassment to the fighter and the fact the fight will have to be delayed if a KO happened in sparring.
 
i dont think conor spars that hard does he? he's been pretty adamant about that. i'm no mcgregor defender. but this "he gets knocked out in all his camps" rumour sounds like #1 bullshit.

i do agree with the "negative zero" prediction though.

If Conor loses, he'll claim he's an UFC fighter first and this match shouldn't count toward his official record.

Both men will have all their bases covered, just in case.

You don’t get to choose if a fight is on your record. It’s an official fight licensed by the NSAC. Nothing Floyd says will change that.

Well it shouldn't go on Connor's MMA record if he wins or loses. However it should go on his boxing record (and Floyd's) since it is a boxing match.

Nah, if Conor loses his MMA record will still be 24-3 and not 24-4. His boxing record will be 0-1 though.
 
Got a few questions since I've never ordered a pay fight like this.

  1. Do I have to have Showtime to order it? Or can I just pay the $100 to someone else (?) and have access to it?
  2. What do you actually get for your $100? There is some pre-fight stuff? How long (estimate) will I actually be watching stuff for the price I pay?
  3. What time do you think this fight will actually start? (I am on eastern time.)

1. No, you don't have to have Showtime. The easiest way to get it is with a cable or satellite subscription and order through their ppv section but I'm sure there will other way to order it online as well.

2. I believe there will be 3 undercard fights. So far the fighters named on the undercard are Savannah Marshall, Badou Jack and Gervonta Davis, who their opponents will be is not yet known. The Savannah Marshall fight is interesting, I've seen a lot of boxing PPVs and I think this will be the first time I've seen female boxing on the undercard. Gervonta Davis will be the co-main event and he will be defending his title, he is described as mini Mike Tyson. The whole event runs for roughly 3-4 hrs.

3. Looks like you're going to have a late night, main event doesn't usually start until around 11:30pm est.

Christy Martin was on a bunch of Tyson fight cards back in the day, it's what made her famous.

Yeah back then my dad was the one ordering the PPVs but he wasn't really a boxing fan, more of a Mexican boxing fan so if a Mexican fighter wasn't on the main event he wasn't ordering.

No problem. You should probably still expect a midnight start, around 11:30 is if there no delays, given how crazy this event will be I could see this starting past midnight.
 
Floyd got clean nailed while coming forward by Maidana, and it did stun him, but didn't really hurt him much. And if Maidana can't hurt Floyd with pillow gloves, how will Conor?

Conors power in boxing is confirmed to be just a little above average. And since Floyd is forcing this non boxer to wear gloves that are not mx, not horse hair, or even any Mexican brand, there is just no way Conor could hurt Floyd.

It is kinda pathetic. Other professional boxers don't even ask that to other boxers with killer power. And Floyd is forcing someone who isn't even a real boxer to wear big soft foam gloves. Even if Conor lands a lucky punch it can't really hurt Floyd. People should know what they are in for.

It's a hundred dollars. There are going to be a lot of angry people after this fight.

It's all about being the A side. In theory, I agree with you. However, his fight with Oscar shaped his perception going forward. Whatever Oscar wanted for the fight, Floyd said cool, because he was the B side.

Floyd had to wear Reyes gloves, he prefers Grants, though at the time, he was wearing Winning Gloves, which are pillows

I believe the ring was smaller than the 20x20 feet that Vegas fights now stipulate

Its true fighters will tilt things in their favor, but not allowing a fighter to use their own legal gloves is unheard of. Oscar didn't do that to Floyd.

And doing that to Maidana, is ridiculous, because all he has is power. Maidana never outboxed anyone in his whole life, but he knocked out a lot of fools.

Yeah, Conor is doing it for money. But people should just be aware. The betting line for this fight is the most stupid I have ever seen. A ton of money has been put on Conor and it is distorting the odds.

It's actually very common for the a-side to mandate glove selection.

The most common reason simply has to due with sponsorships. Second to that is feel and comfort preference.

There can be a marginal difference in power, but that has been way overblow as it relates to the Maidana fight. Errol Spence is considered one of the hardest punchers in boxing, and he exclusively wears Grant glove, the same gloves described as "pillows" in this thread. Here's one of the KOs he scored wearing Grants:

Floyd felt that the distribution of the padding was off on Marcos' gloves. Someone from NASC agreed with him.
 
It's supposed to be the hottest ticket in sports.

So far, though, fans aren't exactly storming the box office to buy tickets for Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s fight next month with Conor McGregor.

A check online Saturday revealed hundreds of seats still available from Ticketmaster at the T-Mobile Arena for the Aug. 26 fight. There are so many open seats that fans with enough room left on their credit cards can buy six tickets together in 162 different spots throughout the arena.

That might be because of the astronomical prices set by promoters -- the cheapest tickets still available on Ticketmaster have a face value of $3,500. Or maybe fans are just waiting for the right time to buy, hoping the price will go down.

Either way, promoter Leonard Ellerbe isn't terribly concerned. He says the fight will not only sell out, but break records for the richest gate.

"We're very excited and very happy with ticket sales so far," Ellerbe told The Associated Press. "We're well on our way to smashing our own record which transcended the sport."

That record was a $72,198,500 gate set by Mayweather in his 2015 fight with Manny Pacquiao. That live gate was more than three times bigger than any previous boxing gate.

Still, five days after tickets first went on sale, seats throughout the arena are widely available. They are not, however, for anyone a little light in the wallet.

Prices start at $3,500 -- plus another $300 or so for buyer fees -- and climb to $10,000 near the ring. There are "platinum" seats that go for as much as $14,995.

The resale market is nearly as pricey. At Seatgeek.com the get-in price is around $2,000 -- for one of the few seats that originally sold at $500 -- and the median listing price is about $7,000.

There seems to be sticker shock in the marketplace.

"There's fairly little sales going on in general," said Chris Leyden, a content analyst for SeatGeek.com. "I think a lot of it has to do with where prices are now. I think people are a little uncomfortable paying this much or maybe even more."

The situation is much the same at StubHub, where demand for tickets is lower than it was at the same time before Mayweather's fight with Pacquiao two years ago.

"We're not necessarily seeing demand levels for the fight yet," said Johnna Hoff, a StubHub spokeswoman. "The encouraging part is people are buying some tickets."

A UFC spokeswoman did not return calls for comment. Ticketmaster replied to an email by saying it will "decline to comment at this time."

Any sign of slow ticket sales would undercut the argument by promoters that the fight might be the richest of all time, topping the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout that grossed some $600 million.

Joris Drayer, a ticketing expert and professor of sports business at Temple, said high prices are likely limiting the market. Drayer said by the time fans spend money on travel and hotels in Las Vegas they would easily be over $10,000 for two tickets, making the pay-per-view a more attractive option.

Drayer also said that some of the smaller resellers who might have bought tickets in the past are likely on the sidelines because the tickets are so expensive that it will be harder to flip them for a profit.

"This is the challenge when pricing a one-of-a-kind type of event. No one knows what the demand will be," Drayer said in an email. "In this case, it seems the promoters overestimated what people would be willing to pay -- and how many of those people willing (to) pay thousands would actually attend the event."

The four-city promotional tour that the two fighters went on attracted large crowds, but fans for the most part got in free. Promoters are also expecting huge pay-per-view sales at $99.95 apiece that could rival the 4.6 million sold for Mayweather-Pacquiao.

The demand for the fight is being driven largely by UFC fans, who tend to be younger than boxing fans and may not have pockets quite as deep.

Another sign that demand may be lacking -- hotel prices for the weekend of the fight. There are still plenty of rooms available online in the $300 to $400 range, including several hotels operated by MGM Grand, which owns the T-Mobile Arena.

They literally can't. Any weight above 147 is mandatory 10oz gloves. Although, I don't think Mayweather is scared to fight in 8oz gloves, he used them for the Cotto and Maidana fights, 2 well known heavy hitters. For the Maidana fight Floyd would spar with a super middleweight with a 15-0 14 ko's record. I don't think he's too worried about Conor's power.

This is a sanctioned fight so, you can't fight with 8 oz. Anything above 147, has to be 10 oz. This is sanctioned by NSAC.

That's false, there's cheaper tickets but they are gonna run $2,000.

They priced out far too many fans. I think you'd get a lot more to bite on $1000 tickets.. but $2000 for shit seats and $3500 for not much better... that's hard to justify.

Especially since few think McGregor really truly has a chance.

Smaller and lighter, both qualities produce higher power. Absolutely. Punchers gloves are smaller, more compact and dense. Defensive foam gloves are bigger, more surface area, less dense, so they hit less hard.

Lighter means, faster hand speed, greater power because of increased velocity, but also more accurate because of less weight, and also increased velocity means you see the punch less, anticipate it less and your body braces itself less for a punch less, all of these things translate to more devastating punches.

This is why UFC gloves are so easy to knock out people with.
 
Floyd is now sparring with Chris Eubank Jr. Current IBO Super Middleweight champion. For those that don't know, that's at 168 pounds. Chris rehydrates to around 180 at times so I would figure he's somewhere around that weight for the sparring. Floyd is probably 154-156 now.
 
Floyd is just gonna play and dance around Conor for 6 rounds then Conor will just go down to exhaustion quickly after that.

I guess living in a country that isn't big on combat sports has it's perks yay!

According to Nevada Commission executive director Bob Bennett, they are not going to bend the rules for the Mayweather-McGregor contest - regardless if the two fighters agree in writing - and both athletes will be required to wear 10-ounce gloves.
"These regulations are in place for the health and safety of the athletes, which is of the utmost importance to the commission," Bennett told ESPN. "Our regulations already outline the appropriate glove size according to contracted weight of a fight."

Getting it for free makes it a no brainer. I doubt I'd have paid more than the standard US PPV price in Germany of €15-€20 for this circus. But with the free month of DAZN it's actually a great reason to register. I'll do it later this month when the football seasons they're covering start again to get the maximum out of my trial.
