Is Rockband still worth it?

Got hit by a heavy dose of nostalgia and reaaaaaally want to blow $200 on the RB4 bundle and Pro Cymbals. Am I just being super irrational? I had RB1-3 + The Beatles RB (by far my favorite), Lego RB and Green Day RB on my 360, as well as a stack of guitars, the ION drums, and keyboard. That said, I also sold or donated all of that as soon as the plastic instruments fad died and none of my friends were interested in banging on plastic instruments anymore.

I’m reaaaaally close to pulling the trigger on this, but does it still hold up? I know that’s a super subjective question, but I’m really worried that a week later I’m going to take a step back and realize it’s impossible to recapture those 2007 feelings, but I’m stuck with $200 worth of stuff I’ll never use again. I haven’t heard the best things about RB4 since release, and not necessarily having all of my music from the old games is a huge turnoff as well.

Edit: other option is a $6 first gen drumset and $2 first gen guitar at goodwill, but that seems like it would be a bad time.
 
The game is basically the same as its always been. If you enjoyed it then you might enjoy it now. I can confirm it's still really fun with friends.
 
I wouldn't buy an entire $200 set unless you know you'll have friends to play it with.

Apparently a lot of the problems people had with RB4 got fixed in the Rivals expansion, but that didn't get a lot of news coverage.

Get the Fender+Rivals bundle to start with, and if you're having a good time then look into purchasing a secondhand drum set.

Yeah, this is a valid concern. I probably wouldn’t have a ton of friend use, maybe like once or twice a month at parties.

I’d go for the cheaper Stratocaster bundle with no guilt, but I’m really only in this for the pro drums.

Check GameStop. They should have Rivals bundles in store or online for cheap.

OP are you in the US? The Rock Band Rivals bundles are easily found for like $100 if you go to gamestop. Which tend to still have a ton of them. If you have an Xbox one and you already payed for those songs you had on 360 back in the day for 130+ (You could probably even find the pro cymbals cheaper) tax you'd be looking at a lot of content.

Don't get it. Rock Band 4 is an enormous disappointment and the fixes don't excuse it, or get it anywhere near the level of RB3. (For instance, the RB4 drums STILL don't work right).

If you can, get RB3 going again. There have gotta be some half-decent instruments in good shape on eBay.

I still play RB3 from time to time. 4 sits unused.

Btw, any exports or dlc you bought last gen will work in RB4. Only RBN dlc won't work due to licensing issues.

You can also export RB3 for $15, and RB4 is honestly really good now. Is it as good as 3? No. But it holds its own.
 
I'd recommend just picking Rock Band 3 up again if you had a lot of Rock Band Network songs like I did. TONS of metal hit RBN, but none of it is accessible in RB4.

They were absolutely impossible to find at launch and I gave up looking after a while. Can get the game used for $20 now and the adapter from amazon for another $20. Not bad. Might have to finally pick it up. I have so much DLC I didn't want to hop over to PS4.
 
For sure. I was very happy to find a complete Band in A Box bundle after scavenging the internet for weeks, a shame I couldn't find the pro cymbals anywhere though.

I love my drumset and still love playing it, had a couple of get together with a bunch of people had had a blast playing music all night.
 
Piggybacking off this topic to ask: Is it worth it to get RB4 for PS4 considering I didn't have a PS3 and therefore I'd have to start buying DLC from scratch? And on that note, anything notable that has been delisted aside from the export themselves?
 
Rock Band 4 itself isn't all that impressive, and I don't play it near as often anymore since weekly DLC hasn't been as good either, but I'm still amazed Harmonix managed to allowed me to transfer almost my entire library of DLC to a new console.

For that alone it is worth it.
 
I believe the Rivals game bundle has the core+expansion which adds a couple more songs to the list, the core RB4 songs are pretty disappointing so I suggest ebaying a copy of Rock Band 3 and then export those into RB4.

The DLC library is huge though so there's enough songs to download.

Licenses suck because I would buy all previous Rockbands just to add some good songs to my list.
 
As someone who got bit by the nostalgia bug myself and blew hundreds of dollars re-establishing Rock Band in my living room setup, I'm currently really regretting it. I bought Rock Band 4 at launch, played it myself a HELL of a lot for a little while, played with friends every 2-3 weeks, then graduated college, got married, and now really don't have folks nearby who want to play it. It ended up being a colossal amount of money for something I got so little mileage out of.

I guess my recommendation would be to consider the cost of entry and whether you know you will have friends who would want to play it with you. At the end of the day, that's what will make it worth it in the long run.
 
I guess it's still worth it because I actually got $3 for Rockband III when I traded it in to Gamestop a couple weeks ago.
 
God, I hate the Rock Band guitar and it's squishy strum bar. I would buy that set in a heartbeat if it just had a clicky strum bar like Guitar Hero had.

Maybe when/if you have kids they could pick up drums to learn the basics of drumming and keep them entertained while learning something...

back on topic, i don't know why they dropped keyboard support, it seemed like the most natural way learn the instrument, and also the easiest for casuals on a group.

My guess: More people wanting the Xbox One version to get their Xbox 360 tracks; Xbox 360 completely dominated the PS3 in territories in which Rock Band was popular last-gen.
 
If you get the cymbals and try the real thing once in a while, Rock Band can legit teach you to play the drums and play them well

That alone is worth it if that's something you're interested in
