Waking Titan (also known as Project WT) is an ARG (alternate reality game) involving a multitude of websites, phone numbers, and radio stations scattered across the world. The ARG is being produced by veteran puppet masters, and will feature NPCs, actors, and live events. The ultimate purpose of Waking Titan is connected to the upcoming 1.3 update for No Man's Sky.

Any hints as to what will be in the patch?

For all the hate & flak the game got, I'm glad there are people who like it and the developers are still supporting it. They could have easily took the money and ran.

I know they've added a lot of content since launch, but I can't help and think an ARG was just a cheap way out of adding something tangible to the game.

That sounds... expensive.
I hope this update is substantial and they didn't just blow all their money on hyping it up.

You'd think they would want to be really open about what's going to be happening to the game.

A pessimist would say the mystery is the only thing keeping any sort of excitement alive.

I think I will jump back in after this update. I was one of the people clamoring for base building but I still didn't come back even after it was introduced. Still glad they added it, but yeah, I'm surprised they had enough fortitude to continue to update this.

I found the base game to be enjoyable, it was just a bit too shallow.

My exact thought. Yeah, it's cool, and the diehard players may appreciate it, but any funds should probably go towards fleshing the game out.

As an aside, have any multiplayer features been added since the launch kerfuffle? Or is it still asymmetrical-lite?

Well, I'm not a fan of ARGs so I couldn't care less.

But I doubt it was "cheap" based on how expansive it's been, and I would think it's the opposite of 'a way out of patching the game,' but rather the entire purpose of the ARG is precisely to promote and draw attention to something tangible they're about to add to the game.

That said, my expectations are at 0 because reasons//NMS//fool me once/twice//etc =p

But if 1.3 patch was another short of a major patch, then I'd say that it would confirm beyond even 'release' that Hello Games are mildly sociopathic-professional trolls hhhhh.

Either way, if I had to guess I'd say it'll be pretty decent. I was pretty impressed with the base building in Foundations and the vehicles in Pathfinder. No expectations but cautiously hopeful.

I didn't mean financially, as they're claiming to be spending a lot on it, even though it might just be buzzwords. I mean you know the controversy surrounding your game - don't spend a crazy amount of money on something that'll be forgotten after it ends. Add features, content, or something to the actual game. ARG sounds cool, for a game that has a devoted following and good standing.

They've had two big updates are they not allowed to hype the third one?

Totally fine - just seems very off base for a game with a content problem. Yes, they've had 2 big content updates, but I think the consensus is depth is still a problem. One of those updates was completely contradictory to the spirit of the game (base building/staying put).

Again, might be fine. As someone who bought in at launch and felt burned, those are my thoughts. People who stuck with it or enjoyed the new additions may love it.

I think with a game like NMS were their consumer goodwill was so hurt that adding content at this point makes less of a difference and can have diminishing returns that were likely already relatively highly diminished from the get-go.

In consumer behaviour, there's a point where a product can sort of become inept set of products being considered. And because of this the characteristics you evaluate a product on change, so if consumers typically consider price or content for most sets of products, they may no longer do so for an inept set good.

Basically, Hello Games already made 2 major content patches, and I'm guessing they likely so that NMS sales remained inept.

So, there comes a point where just reducing price or adding content doesn't matter much because the way consumers view a product has become so inept relative to other products, so you have to somehow use promotion to dramatically shift the game back into an evoked set.

ARGs or marketing stunts are a way to do this. I'm basically just reciting intro consumer behaviour from when I was a youngling haha :P But it's holds true and it's why they're commonplace.

There's a fundamental reason why marketing stunts like ARGs that capture the imagination or cause intrigue can work so successful. They're hit-or-miss but sometimes they're the only thing you can do when changing traditional characteristics (e.g. price or content) no longer matter.

On the flipside of that, as one of those burnt consumers, I would be much more susceptible to a headline that reads "NMS Multiplayer Finally Real!" than an ARG. For me, the content they added so far just wasn't enough for me to come back yet.

But, I understand insights and market research probably went into this.

Oh, for sure, but I think even if this ARG is 'not cheap,' it's probably tremendously cheaper than something as major as MP :D

It's probably just cost-effective relative to creating promotion for a 1.3 patch similar in size to the Foundations or Pathfinding patches. I think a MP patch is probably on an entirely different level (because I think if it was similar in cost/time to Foundations or Pathfinding, then they would have added MP first) and I agree with you that it could stand on its own.

And for what it's worth, I agree :P I personally don't care for ARGs and I rather just have better underground mining for my new moon base hhhhh. But I do think there is some good logic for a ARG promotion in the case of a product like NMS.

Bought the game at launch. This is pretty hype! Even though I bought the game due to the GAF excitement I still have a good time with it!

Let's hope that this ARG gets decrypted soon to see what's in store.

Enough with this. Please. Just leave.

With the other patches, once they were publicly announced, HG was very open about them. Trailers and all. This isn't hurting anyone, let 'em go nuts!

I feel like it's too late to salvage this. I think it's a lot harder to save single player games than it is to save multiplayer games (FFXIV, Destiny).

Savage as all fuck!

Got a good chuckle from me. Hope it adds something cool to the game for sure.

I'd have thought that as many resources as possible should be going into making the game better rather than writing riddles, but if this ARG generates enough buzz (and assuming that the new content is worth it rather than being Fucking Nothing) then more power to the devs imo.

I'm hoping this is a Vanilla Destiny > Taken King scale update. If it is, then I think I'd finally be open to checking this game out. It was clear that the original game wouldn't be great, but it sounds like they've been making some good improvements.

Yes, yes. Such arg, much wow. Now give me the update and content please, I like videogames and payed for one please and thank you.

This ARG isn't made by Hello Games themselves. Or rather, they didn't construct it, the lore and such of the ARG is of course from Hello Games, but most likely this lore will find its way in the game in some capacity.

This is something HG could have had a back and forth with the ARG company for a couple of hours and they doing the heavy lifting. I don't think this impacted the development cycle for the game much.

Savage AF

On a serious note I am confident Hello Games can and has been taking steps into making NMS into a good game. Sure it shouldn't of launched the way it did but it's salvageable. This could be a Warframe and Diablo 3 situation.
