Your Lie in April (Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso) IOTI Life is Colorful

I feel like they'd need to change some things for the live action. Like getting rid of most/all of the slapstick. It was kind of weird to have the show attempt to treat physical abuse as a serious issue while having joke scenes where Kousuke gets physically assaulted by his friends/love interest.

did you watch the dubbed version? yup, that ending song with the letter, especially if you know the english translation

Yeah I was bothered by the fact that they didn't translate any of the songs in the dub, especially given how much ED1 factored into it. I'm sure that'll be rectified in the boxset though.

Yeah I watched the dub. Was nearly in tears. I recognised the ending song but the netflix version doesn't have subs for the openings and endings

I wouldn't really expect them to tbh. But anyways, translation is here, read and weep http://www.lyrical-nonsense.com/lyrics/wacci/kirameki/#page=English-tv
and interestingly, if you read the lyrics early on the in the series you would expect that they would be referencing Kosei's feelings to Kaori, but they actually apply to hers as well Fun stuff

Also, remember everyone to support the manga which is out in bookstores in English now! (Hint, it's really good and a different experience)

YLIA is a slower show with some plot points I never really identified with, but I'll let you know that by the end I was acceptive to them in the context of the story.

I recommend you keep going.

2 more EP... but if the the main character has again mommy issues Im dropping it.

Is ridiculous that on a 22ep series, on ep10 the main character has the same mommy problem from ep1.

It does wane and resolve. To be honest I was never the biggest fan of how the main handles things up until the leadup to the end. If it's something you feel like you have to drop out of I wouldn't blame you, but give it a bit more if you can.

Full trailer for the live-action movie. (If you stumble onto this thread and haven't watched the anime yet fully, probably don't watch this trailer)

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like (not even understanding the dialogue so I could be wrong) that it spoils like, a ton, of the story.

On the bright side, the movie certainly seems to be really pushing the romance over the music, which I'm ok with because it makes it more worth watching for exploring new area than being a complete retread

Lol,The trailer is basically a summary of the Anime.

Just finished watching this.
Heard it was sad, but damn. The most I've cried in a while
. My favorite anime so far.

I recently finished the dub, and by god that was amazing work by Patrick Seitz. He really managed to capture the nuance in the dialogue in a way that the subs didn't, pretty much the perfect adaption while remaining faithful the spirit of each line. I've seen the series subbed so many times, but the dub was a completely new experience and one which I'd consider the definitive version of the series for me. They clearly took a lot of care with it, and I was super impressed with the way that the lines of dialogue were performed with the same inflection as the JP voices.

Bravo Patrick Seitz and Bang Zoom on an incredible job in taking my favourite series and propelling it to a new height.

Is there a Japanese metacritic for movies.

Interested what the critical reception is

I would like to know this too. Still sort of hilarious that the trailer spoils pretty much the entire series.

the last bump isn't that old, and i doubt a lttp thread will get much posts so i'll use this thread

i finished the anime just on may 1st, the ending pains me, but man this anime is so good, I love it, what I hate is that Kaori doesn't get to play the violin once again with Arima, we see how hard she try for the majority of the show and it sucks, not to mention all the things she went through after the half way point all the way to the end, especially if you imagine all the hardship that happened offscreen...

the bitter sweet part is that everyone was moved by her and were able to grow, it ended on a bright note but this kind of ending just really gets to me because I keep thinking about what ifs and how things could've been better.

the ending is incredible though, the performance with Arima when he realizes Kaori is going to leave and asked her not to go, and don't mind if they'd just remain friends forever ;_;, then the letter :(

anyone watched the live action film?

Arima's sad expression when Kaori appear with her violin in the last performance fucking kills me

this show got to me so much, every ep moved me for some reason, especially whenever someone gets on stage, when Kaori said "I'm going to struggle as hard as I can, struggle, struggle, struggle like there's no tomorrow and it's your fault", shit fucking slays me

"we all need someone to kiss us good bye"

Happy to hear you loved it! Did you watch the dub or the sub? Definitely watch the dub at some point if you went sub for your first viewing

I watched the sub but yeah I'll definitely do a rewatch with dub so I can focus on the music and the animations without being distracted from reading the subs

some of the scenes are just so phenomenal, they did such a good job with the last performance, the violin part is still stuck in my head

I think I'll buy the manga

the dubbed version is a tear jerker in the last two episodes, they knocked it out of the ballpark

They absolutely killed it. I'm so happy with the job that Patrick Seitz did with it - I think like a number of us, I've seen the sub multiple times and was blown away with how good the dub is (comment is directed generally and not just at you darkwing since I know you're an OG in this thread haha). I think it did well too - the fact that Patrick Seitz is in charge of the Anohana dub is exciting for me and I can't wait to see how good it will be.

Erica Lindbeck (Kaori) was amazing in particular - nice to see that she's getting some more prominent roles now (such as Futaba in Persona 5)

She's also the voice of Anemone in Nier: Automata.

anyone watched the live action film?

It's not as good as the anime :P

The mother seems slightly less cruel in the movie since she doesn't have that many scenes though.

Hm... And I've not posted this in this thread....

I've been to the riverbank with the cherry blossom trees, the bridge, and also the train crossing from the last episode of the anime while in Tokyo.

All three performance venues shown as well:

Dammit, guess I'm gonna have to rewatch that show again. I want to, but I also kinda don't want to because that last episode was the most emotional I've ever been watching a show.

But I doubt a second watch will ever live up to how I felt the first time and maybe it's better to have had that experience once and just leave it at that.

YLiA was a tear jerker, but it was nothing compared to what Anohana did to me. ;_;

Just finished this last night. Not bad. Once the details were revealed around episode 7-8 the ending was all but *spoiled* for me as I call these things easily but the execution and delivery of it was very well done.

And yes, the song from the finale definitely tugs at your heart.

for some reason I always love to rewatch these shows because I kind of want to see the characters get together again, and there are always details I missed the first time.

I came across this anime while browsing Netflix. I've been getting into classical music and learning the violin for a couple years now, so when I saw it was about a pianist and violinist, I was intrigued.

Just finished the final episode.

Oh man, this show fucked me up. I'm not a crier, but I had a big lump in my throat throughout many of the scenes, and for pretty much the entirety of the final two episodes. The scene at the end where Kousei is reading the letter... that nearly broke me.

What an incredibly touching, bittersweet, and visually/musically beautiful show. This piece of the OST has been playing in my head for a couple days now, and it fills me with emotion. I don't watch a lot of anime, and rarely admit that I watch it at all because the genre is so full of embarrassing, weird, and/or perverted tropes, but this is a show I could recommend to anyone. I have so much to say about it... but the emotional impact is still so raw I'll probably end up rambling. One scene that really continues to stand out, aside from the obvious ones, is the one where Kousei gives Tsubaki a piggyback ride after her baseball game and she cries on his back, while inside admitting she wishes that moment could go on forever. Too sweet for words. This show really nailed the emotional messiness of being a 14-year-old.

On a more personal note: I was kind of in a slump with my violin practice. I'm currently working through the end of Suzuki Book 4, and if any of you have learned violin maybe you'll remember - it's a large spike in difficulty from Book 3 and can be very discouraging. My teacher said it's the book where many students realize they don't want to put in the dedication to progress further on the violin. I've managed to get this far, but I'll admit I've been wavering for a while. I took up the violin right around my 26th birthday, mostly out of curiosity and because it was something I'd been wanting to try for years. But Suzuki Book 4 made me realize I'd probably need more than that to finish this book and progress through the next ones. And as sappy and cliché as it may sound, this show lit a fire under my ass. Like the main character, I'm also pretty bad at expressing my emotions through words. It made me realize that I'd like to become proficient enough at the violin one day so that I may express myself through the music I play, and maybe even move other people with my playing. I'm certainly a long way off from being able to do that, but it's a worthy goal I think, and it fills me with new purpose for putting in those hours of difficult, often frustrating, practice.

All that from a damn cartoon. Pretty goddamn amazing. My hat's off to the creators and animators of this show.

I think of all the anime, this is the one that affected me the most, I went back to playing the piano

as you said, finding that purpose again and inspiration

this anime should be on everyone's watch list

Maybe I'm weird but I never liked Kaori solely for the fact that she barged in and stole the best girls thunder, after she had been putting in work on Arima. The only time I ever felt anything towards her was the ending letter but aside from that, nothing

Me too man... me too. So
inspiring and sad
at the same time.

Same here, and by no small margin. I don't think I've ever felt this depth of emotion from an anime before. It was so good.

Maybe I'm weird but I never liked Kaori solely for the fact that she barged in and stole the best girls thunder, after she had been putting in work on Arima. The only time I ever felt anything towards her was the ending letter but aside from that, nothing

I think Kaori knew it was selfish too, and that's likely one of the reasons why
she held back from confessing her love to Kousei while she was still alive. In her final letter you get the gist that she knew Kousei would end up with Tsubaki one day. But Kaori was dying, so I think she can be forgiven for taking her last chance at getting close to the guy she loved
. Rewatching it, you can only imagine how happy (and yet bittersweet) she felt in this scene:

And you realize how incredibly important this scene was for her,
since it was basically her only chance to fulfill her dying wish
:

This is one of those shows that might actually be more emotionally affecting on a rewatch, because of scenes like the ones above.

Fuck this anime. It made an almost 30 years old man cry like a baby... I don't remember the last time I cried this much. There is some slow stuff in the middle but the ending moments are good enough to compensate.
