What is the deal with awful people online and anime avatars?

I don't deny it, there are huge parts of anime that are pretty awful. But "a lot of it" seems a bit of a blanket statement, majority of the anime that makes it into the spotlight have underlying tones that are relatively mature. Even anime that I think is shit have this (Yuri on Ice), as well as the shows I enjoy having those awful qualities (Negima). Think what you want I guess, but I find that most anime have the same tropes that live action shows have as well, the only difference is it's a cartoon.

Nah there's a huge cultural gulf between live-action American shows (and even American cartoons) and anime.

I don't know what the deal is, but the phenomenon does annoy me. <_<
Nice almost-anime avatar ya got there.

It is? I've watch plenty of cartoons with my little nephews and they got tons of tropes that animes usually do. I can't speak for live action shows though, since i've hardly watch them.

American cartoons generally don't include stuff like this (NSFL warning) or that or this, too. And that's just off the top of my head and doesn't include things like "fanservice" moments in otherwise tame shows because it's the norm, and when I say "fanservice" note that I'm usually talking about very visibly and obviously underaged girls.

That's not to say that American stuff is free of this shit, but this stuff is ubiquitous in the anime industry. It's on a completely different scale. To the point where it's extremely difficult to avoid it if you like to watch a lot of different genres.

what about people with no avatars

If that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death. It is doomed to wander through the world -- oh, woe is me! -- and witness what it cannot share, but might have shared on earth, and turned to happiness!'

I was talking about general tropes. Usually when people compare cartoons and anime they tend to pick examples that fit their arguments, or the most famous ones, but, again, when you see other stuff out there, you see that the tropes are Very much the same in lots of stuff in both kinds of animation.

Sexual fanservice, on the other hand, is not. That one is more akin to anime and i don't remember any Cartoon these days fearuring It, but this os not the only trope out there.

Also, ubiquitous is a much powerful word for something like that. Lots of anime feature little If none of it. I agree that there is a lot with it though.

Assholes like things just like normal people.

There are racists who like Star Trek.

There are racists who like Uncharted.

There are racists who like The Avengers.

There are racists who like your favourite sports team.

It's just that it's easier to identify an anime fan. :p

Cartoons maybe, but your middle option is from a superhero themed manga. You can find far worse in pretty much any american superhero comic if we're talking about depictions of women.

Man why can't anime fans just admit that their community is a dumpster fire. I enjoy anime but I also realize that most of it is horrendous. Decent anime fans need to take the fucking trash out of their community. And if your response to people voicing their concerns about the sexualization of pre-pubescent girls in anime, which is horrifyingly and increasingly common, is to ignore it/make some snarky comment about video game avatars then you're part of the fucking problem.

AnimeGAF polices itself pretty well. I don't know where else anime kids hang out these days.

But what about the football fans that throw bananas at players?

I will side eye any weeaboo in Home Depot's Home and Garden section from now on.

Next time there's a Nazi gathering the counterprotestors need to bring real torches to show the tiki torch crowd what sad cucks they are.

anime is trash and so am I.

I swear I have to say the following to at least one misguided person a year, ffs.

A: Using anime avatars is a known troll defense to deflect hatred away from them and to smear a whole community in the same stone throw. Same goes for their use of gamer avatars.

B: Using anime face avatars can fool weak photo recognition defenses on platforms that implement it for account creation.

C: For shits and giggles, let's say there are 100 million anime and video game fans online in the world. If just 1% of them are assholes that come from the southern USA and deep eastern Europe, that's still a million people, a vocal minority born from hate.

D: There are a lot of assholes in the world. Think of them as assholes who happen to be also anime fans, assholes who happen to be also gamers, and assholes who happen to be also *insert any topic here*.

Yep. You can't trust those shifty-eyed, tricksters. Top 5 worst avatar types:

1. Anime
2. Furries
3. Sonic
4. No avatar or something like just a line or a color
5. Furries

5. Animu
4. Sonic
3. Undertale
2. MLP
1. Furries

OP has an avatar of a character who is introduced in the 1st game by saying he wants to rape the main characters female friend.

Just sayin.

poor misunderstood majima-dono

i don't get it, either: as a fan of comics, video games, hip hop, boxing etc i can fully own that these respective bases are so, so much garbage, whether i like it or not

it's like bitching years ago that sonic fans shouldn't be associated so much with furries & actual weird shit: that ship kinda sailed

you're not wrong here, though. god, the gaming side icecream threads (or any vita loli game) brought in those avatars by the droves

well shit now i want that dumb shirt

Agreed. Furries in general are trash.

But that's mostly because I have an irrational fear towards people in animal costumes. I get physically uneasy. I have no clue what they're scheming.

If I look at TVtroopes it's really not that different excluding ecchi or fanservice in almost half of them (welp and there are the corresponding women fanservice moments in many shows or even for Men with women undressing)

So is anime. What other medium is this chock full of underage sexualisation?

Games too

see this is what I'm fucking talking about. Treating the sexualization of little girls as a joke instead of acknowledging the fucking problem.

It's a big problems, but as long as NEETs and nerds buy that moe stuff and loli merchandise from series ala Illya then it wont change sadly. Japanese producers dont care what we think about that as long as people buy the stuff sadly.

Most of the anime that features stuff like that is an adaption of a light novel, manga, game, or something or other. Most anime in general these days is a commercial for its source material; from looking at the chart for this season there's like 5-6 original shows out of the nearly 40 that are airing in total and even some of these are cross-media projects that have mobile games attached to them.

Have you...

Have you ever watched western cartoons?

Not a "this is my impression of western cartoons", but I mean have you really honest-to-fuck watched western cartoons, because this exact same sort of shit happens there too.

Okay, maybe I'd be hard-pressed to find a genderbent past-figure, but the other two can be matched easily just by picking a couple of decade-old shows from cartoon network.

His 2nd paragraph covers this.

I'm sure there's plenty of well adjusted anime fans out there, but half the reason of why I just stopped watching that shit altogether was because it was wrecking my psyche. It was just unhealthy for me to watch it, it was starting to fill my head with some fucked up shit that I really didn't want to be thinking.

That, and 99% of the medium is filled with garbage. Other forms of media are pretty dire as well, but I've never seen a different medium that's so filled with gross shit and unsavory philosophies behind them. And they're really boring too
