Exactly. Some person with 5k or less followers is just a yappy little dog. The real threat of any sort has hundreds of thousands or millions seeing what they say. Those anime accounts are harmless.

You can enjoy what you enjoy while not ignoring the parts that are terrible, you know. And there are a lot of terrible parts to anime in general.
(For the record, I watch a lot of anime. And a lot of it is indeed terrible and creepy.)

But to prove I'm not in denial wise let's go further down the rabbit hole, if you enjoy any kind of cartoon, Japanese or American you're probably a racist monster who loves talking about why everyone not white and male is inferior. Next time you see some little girl watching Moan on any kind of tablet you call her out for the monster she is.

There's correlation but not causation.
Until you adjust for 'moe / waifu girls' that are basically there be a very specific category of submissive women, and then you're probably in the reliable range.
Let's not pretend that every anime, or even the inherent values towards women in Japanese culture, are friendly towards the female gender or would be called 'fair' in European value systems. The surprising part is that people can be so ignorant that they think those presentations are somehow representative of (their) reality or something to be entitled to (Otaku, basically).
And that's ignoring far more toxic undercurrents as it is.
General rule for 'probably awful' in avatar presentation is: moe female (not furry), boobs, overly sexual (particularly when age inappropriate!! Seriously, that's the 'ding ding ding' one), ass. So that's basically almost all of gamergaters, really.
However, you can also say that a person unlikely to value women's rights and age limits is unlikely to be a nice person either way, and will probably pick an avatar that represents those, ahum, 'values'.
Still, when looking around online, you definitely see that correlation. Not just 4chan, just search 'otaku' on reddit and you'll see it right away, includes extremely nasty views to go with it.

I don't deny it, there are huge parts of anime that are pretty awful. But "a lot of it" seems a bit of a blanket statement, majority of the anime that makes it into the spotlight have underlying tones that are relatively mature. Even anime that I think is shit have this (Yuri on Ice), as well as the shows I enjoy having those awful qualities (Negima). Think what you want I guess, but I find that most anime have the same tropes that live action shows have as well, the only difference is it's a cartoon.

Well, some people here loves to do oversimplistic generalizations. Specially if it fits their bias. I don't think it's much of a shock.
On the matter of the Topic: i don't think there is any relation. Anime certainly changed with times, but so as everything else and i don't think those changes really matter much in regard to ideologies. I think one person here said It best: its just something that is fairly famous to the point that lots of people like and some people of that group are shit.
Toon-GAF ain't weaseling their way out of this one. They're all painted with the same brush!
