Marc Laidlaw reveals Half-Life 2 Episode 3's story synopsis

Reading that was such melancholy

I used to love valve, worship at its altar

Those days are forever dead, and gabe disappointed a generation. I wonder if hindsight will reveal that his passion for service and platform was simply greed masquerading as innovation - I certainly hope not

Dyson sphere realization and phasing in and out of time and space - God, it actually might have lived up to its impossible hype

Overall if I had to choose between Valve's innovation (virtual reality, an attempt at a "SteamOS/SteamBox", the controllers, upgrades to the Steam platform like cloud saving, family sharing and improving community features along with a generous two hour refund policy) over the years or their single player games actually continuing to release, I'd choose the innovation.... But when we're talking about a billion dollar gaming company, there's absolutely no reason why it should be one or the other. They've "owned" PC gaming for ten years now. If hiring talented individuals takes time, they've certainly had it.

Imagine Episode 3 with loot boxes, always online co-op campaign, micro transactions and everyones favorites: hats! In singleplayer! Wouldn't that be awesome? And maybe a season pass with additional story DLC for minor characters and a horde morde.

I just dont get why they gave up with it. Game sequels dont have to be the greatest thing ever, they dont have to live up to hype. If you think like that then your guaranteed to fail. Just make the best game you can that you want to make. I guess they just didn't want to make it or much of anything else anymore.

I don't think there was every a conscious descision on not to do it. Rather the way Valve works, the game just never "happened".
Nobody gave the order to design HL3, some people worked on it, got stuck, went away. Rinse, repeat, here we are.

Half Life 3 is going to be a trading card game.

To be honest I don't remember why they wanted to go to the Borealis. It's not clear to me why a randomly teleporting ship is so useful to them.

Telltale Games present Half Life 3.

Does reading this make anyone else extremely pissed off at Valve? What we could of experienced... god damn...

Ofcourse. Half Life was critically acclaimed, they sold us a cliffhanger in Episode 2. They have assloads of cash to burn and simply ignored to make a sequel to a hugely succesful game.

Its not like Half Life was in the same condition as Shenmue. It was a healthy franchise, with a huge fanbase and a commercial success.

I never get super pissed at gaming companies; it feels silly- especially ones I love, but damn if this doesn't hurt. The single most disappointed I've ever felt about a developer.

To be honest I find this quite satisfying, after years of nothing. At least I know what it would have been, I don't think the virtual hat/trading card company that is current Valve is capable of making HL3 anyway. Now I have a version in my head.

it has been said a million times before, but the objective truth is that there is almost nothing valve could put out with the half life brand on it that wouldn't be lit up. Too much hype...it is literally a meme. The ill will of not making ep 3 or full on 3 is a sunk cost. No need to add to the fire.HL3 would have to be ( in recent memory) received as well or better than a TLoU. lightning in a bottle.

So if you feel any kind of way toward Valve about HL..ask yourself the question:
If I had all the monies, no evidence that was ever going to stop flowing my way and a practical monopoly on Sales/Distribution -would you take any action that would potentially hurt that profit in any single way?

Before you say something to the effect of "hell yeah because I am a good guy", pretend you are a business, not a gamer. Remeber how much "everyone" wanted the Last Guardian? HL is way bigger in appeal and love, but scale it up. Look at how many TLG threads there are or how many people praise it today as a revelation? Are you ready for the backlash on the modern square FF7 remake? The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

From a business standpoint, the company doesn't need to take on the risk of game development. It would be a passion project and that isn't how business works. If Blizzard doesn't make a new game(at some point) they have to cease operation. If Valve never makes another game, they will still be loaded.

Eh, we dont look at it from a business decision. We as gamers are consumers

The fans made Valve into what they are now, and the fans are rewarded by getting shat upon by mr Gabe

Resistance 3 and Titanfall 2. But neither had as atrong of characrers

We deserve another Resistance, the series actually had some interesting lore that was just never explored. I was dissapointed in R3 regarding that cus 2 really had a lot to dig into and then seemed to be ignored in 3

People love Half Life for what it is and I would have been satisfied with anything following in the same vain. I don't think not making it is the answer here.

Wonderful...

I just laid in bed wide awake for three hours and couldn't get to sleep at all, and now the first bit of news that I "wake" up to is Half-Life pretty much unofficially confirmed to be dead. What a shitty Friday so far.

Thank you for posting this Marc,it sounds incredible. I hope this brings other Half Life fans peace and closure. I'm also fucking furious at Valve though, what could have been....

Half Life 3, if made today, wouldn't be Half Life. I'd expect it would more than likely take the shape of a Destiny/Anthem type game. Valve have clearly stated that they make the games that they and/or the market is interested in. And the linear shooter is over. Massively.

Be careful what you wish for, as the Half Life you'd get may not be the one that you want.
I hope your getting paid for this damage control.

None of your arguments are as "sound" as you seem to think they are.
And frankly the idea that actually putting effort into producing a Half-Life 3 would be financially harmful to Valve is absolutely laughable.

I think... I'm honestly going to replay HL1 - HL2:EP2..
Just to pay a last homage to this great series that accompanied through my early years..

Farewell Gorden..

Just finished reading it and it sounds awesome. I really love the idea that the Combine are just too big to defeat. It's such a nihilistic notion that subverts the expectations of the player. Although it makes me wonder how they would find a true, satisfying conclusion in what would presumably be the final game, Half-Life 3 after episode 3.

I think that is the conclusion. The combine are just too powerful and humanity can't beat them. The end.

High expectations doesn't stop new Star Wars movies, new Zelda games, etc from coming out. It's not like they even reached the end of the HL story, it was simply interrupted by their transition to a service provider.

The reason we don't have Half-Life 3 is because Valve have decided they don't want to develop video games anymore, not because they are scared of the expectations. That's a minor factor.

AMEN!

Hmm, then what would be the point of having Alyx be removed by G-Man and Freeman saved by the Vortigaunts? If that was the true intended ending then they would just kill both of the characters off, right?

Valve's gone full konami on us. I'm so fucking disappointed. It feels like I was lied to for 10 years.

Between this and that laughable card game reveal this might be a notable year of everyone turning on Valve.

G-Man and the Vortigaunts have wacky inter-dimensional powers, perhaps Alyx and Gordon can be of use in another conflict somewhere in spacetime. At least there is some hope that the spirit of resistance will live on.

That's not a reason and doesn't explain why we don't have Half-Life 3 or Portal 3 today.

That is the reason. Valve have transitioned from a video game developer to a service provider, why go through years of crunch on an AAA game when they can sell TF2 hats and make the same amount of money? They don't have the desire or talent required to make the products they used to make.

Yeah, I like that there is still a spirit of hope and rebellion in the face of total power.

Never played Half Life, but it truly is depressing to see how Valve treats its fans.
