Atlantic Hurricane season 2017 |OT|

The scariest thing about Irma is how it's starting to resemble a Super Typhoon. Stuff like this just isn't seen in the Atlantic.

Euro takes it north. West coast hit. Just another possibility. Nothing certain yet.

Hmmm... what's that hitting Nova Scotia? And when? That's my neighborhood...

Edit: Sept 11

At what point do we say "fuck it" and invent a Category 6?
The question has been asked a few times, and the answer is usually "what would the difference in destruction be?", because the categories are meant to be measurements of how destructive a storm is.

what? That's just semantics. a "super typhoon" is characterized by 150mph winds like a Cat 4 Hurricane. The word "typhoon" is just what they refer to hurricanes as in the Northwest Pacific.

I know that. I'm more referring to a Super Typhoon like Haima or Tip. Storms that strong in the Atlantic are almost never seen.

Big argument in the office right now as to whether it's right to have the office open. Some workers walking out - all pretty polite

Time to go home sick id say. Tell them you have "the severe shits".

If a nuclear bomb was going to land within 100 miles of the office, they'd let you go, this IS basically that.

In Fort Lauderdale and every gas station has a 5 car line. Home Depot's line was even longer just for parking. Shit is getting serious.

Welp. Just got off work - absolutely crazy day getting work permit extensions for people evacuating so that they'll be able to return to the islands once the storm is gone. Busiest day I've maybe ever had.

So I busted my ass all yesterday and today and get off an hour early and go to the hardware stores - they're all out of plywood. All of them. Sold out. The second strongest storm by wind speed in atlantic history is bearing down and I won't be able to board up my place. Not only that, but I'm the only house in my row without hurricane shutters so the strata corp has no one to do it / can't help.

Gonna have to make a lot of calls here as this isn't good for me. No panic (storm keeps heading on a south track!) but reason to worry all the same.

EDIT: Also my car is missing a window and there's no garage for me to park it in. Car is going to get wrecked...
:(

Shit... Hope you manage to get your windows taken care of...

At a publix in Jacksonville Florida and it's a madhouse. You'd think it was hitting tomorrow.

I actually just said fuck it and ordered water from Amazon. It gets here Thursday. Need to double check my pantry but might order some canned goods as well.

I'm a broken record but buy water storage containers and fill them with gallons of tap water, freeze some, it'll keep your food cold to

This, although it'll probably arrive, the closer it gets the less I'd trust Amazon to deliver in time.

I did that last year for a 100 gallon bathtub water bag thing just a few days before matthew. It came in late by like 2 weeks.

You know it's bad when the NHC site is coughing and loading images like a 56k modem.

New plane about to enter. This might (hopefully) be its window of maximum intensity. Edit: To clarify, "hope" means it might only weaken slowly from here.

Live in Ft Myers, work in Naples

2 different Naples gas stations we went to at lunch were out of gas and water, they are shutting down the building from Thursday to Tuesday as of right now (Im working on a huge mega tower on Naples beach area)

Okay so my girlfriend and I live in New Orleans and even tho I've been through a bunch of hurricanes now I can't recall for the life of me how soon they ground flights. She wants to go back to NYC to stay with her parents while I would likely do Austin or Tennessee by car. How early should she leave if it ends up on the path to Nola? What do you have like two days max to leave? She's studying for her masters so can't leave super early just on the chance it could come and would have to wait till the last possible minute
