Lego to cut 1,400 jobs and 'reset company' after sales drop

Im sure many would be more inclined to buy LEGO's if they weren't so god damn expensive. I would definitely buy more if they dropped the price. As it stands I get a few for my son every once and a while. Like come on don't cut jobs because you refuse to do the most logical thing.

I haven't purchased a single LEGO set in my entire adult life and I don't plan on changing that unless they drop their insane prices heavily.

I'm curious how much Minecraft has eaten into their profits. It scratches the same itch and is dirt cheap in comparison.

I almost did once because I was in a mall and they were having a mini presentation thingy but then I saw the prices.

Unless you're the highly niche collector, there is literally no reason to buy lego when there's cheap bulk bags with 'close enough' quality and ~25% the cost on amazon.

I was on a bit of a Lego buying streak for a while, but I basically picked up all the sets I wanted. The sets since 2012/13 haven't really interested me at all. The Medieval Village, and then the LOTR and early Hobbit sets were sooooo good.

Gimme more detailed medieval stuff!

i used to love Legos when i was a kid but they were so expensive that gaming was a much better money-to-enjoyment ratio hobby and that was despite me living in a country with inflated game prices.

Legos are even more inflated here. it's like rich people toys pretty much.

Their entire collection is already copied by Chinese manufacturers anyway, time to move their production there.

Licensors royalties percentages are too high, some more greedy than others. I'd stick to create Lego City sets; but at the same time that's all this licensing that has saved them in the past.

I mean the market has just changed. It's like wondering why puzzle and gameboard sales fell when Tiger Electronics handhelds could be had for cheaper.

How many kids beyond the niche collectors or prior Lego fans are dying for the sets now? My 6 year old shithead cousin is asking for a Nintendo Switch and Splatoon 2 and not a lego set.

More shocking is they have 20,000 employee's, are 90% just sales/marketing?

seems like only time I see a lego ad on tv is the next bionitcal/ninja-o/whatever lineup or paid news story about some dude who built a 100,000 lego piece item

Those are doing well actually. Based on the article, they have too many unperforming product lines. Star Wars is not one of them.

They would do even better with a price cut. The idea of the Star Wars TAX is also stupid as licensing fees aren't per product and especially not charged per brick. They paid for a license, there is no reason for them to have a higher per brick price, yes the licensed product is gonna cost more to help compensate for the license, but to calculate per brick is stupid.

Not surprised, they've been doing insanely well the past few years and I'm surprised sales kept going up and up until now.

As far as pricing goes, there are lots of deals to be had and Lego's always been expensive, relatively speaking.

I do think 800 is rather insane as well, but isn’t it a special collectors thing?

Too expensive, too many one use custom parts and focus on licensed properties. I used to love Lego as a kid and now I can afford to buy sets, even normal city ones I can't justify the price compared to what else I could buy for that money..

B-b-but it comes out to 10 cents a brick which is actually a really great value for this *insert Licensed Property* set! /LegoGAF

If my kid asks for LEGO it's a big "NOPE" from both of us, which is a shame. Just way too much money for some of these sets. If he's really got his heart set on one particular set we'll just go to AliExpress and buy the LEPIN version for 1/4th the price.

How about a compromise LEGO? You bring back the OG Bionicle sets and story, continue expanding on it and make it good, and I will buy every single one of them and never question y'all again.

I always thought Lego blocks were overpriced until I bought my son some mega blocks. Built something from them and a lot of the pieces wouldn't sit flush.

That is actually rare nowadays. Custom one use parts is what led them to near bankruptcy in the early 2000s. They have many special bricks now, but those bricks are actually widely used across most of their products for a year or so. And while they introduce new brick elements each year, they also retire some so they don't fall into the trap they did before.

Lego is now only for the world's 10 richest families.

The blocks will now be made exclusively of platinum, 24k solid gold (for poors) and shaped jewels.
