There's nothing inherently wrong with using coarse language in a moment of passion. It happens. Many of us have been normalized growing up to use terms like nigger, faggot, tranny, homo, etc. and society has convinced us that we're not using them as derogatory slurs that they're historically meant for.

But we grow up, we mature, and hopefully someone reaches out to us to inform us that we're making jokes at the expense of other people. And in that moment we either become defensive over our freedom to use the language we are comfortable with, or we learn to exercise empathy and choose different words to convey our intent.

There's nothing noble about being the former.

Seems like the people who refuse to recognize this as racist, make excuses repeatedly, and overall don't listen repeatedly are the ones who have a problem with race. It's not sjw's, it's you whom have a problem with race.

In what scenario would that be accurate?

Perhaps a small village boy in rural China hears an alt-right backpacker use the word after a goat headbutts his leg and repeats it because he thinks it sounds funny? And then gets in trouble 10 years later while visiting the US and has to explain the misunderstanding?

I think it's safe to assume that people who use it as an insult know what the word means. :P

Paying kids in a country to hold a sign that says 'Death to Jews'

The reactions to this are pretty telling on how the internet will react when Trump's N-bomb tape inevitably surfaces.

"But he was angry!" will be used to excuse just about anything racist these days, as if racism isn't an expression of irrational hate, fear, and anger.
 
People are really arguing that the most famous internet personality of the last decade, who previously got into hot water over stuff like this before, is somehow ignorant of the racial connotations of "nigger".

When did the whole normalization of it start anyway? I must've missed it. At least "faggot" got a South Park episode.

He is from Sweden and didnt grow up with the social stigma this word has in the US. He mostly learned it probably from rap songs as a cool thing they say every other word.

I went into it on the gaming side version of this thread, which itself is heavily quoted from a previous OT discussion that happened years ago when Piers Morgan said something stupid.

Short answer: The '90s is when the issue first started getting seriously clouded and people began believing the notion that there are two different meanings to the word based on pronunciation

And when do they use it in a similar context?

If he said "sup, my nigga", maybe you'd have a point. Instead, he used it in the same context as Americans have for the past 250 years.

It's like the other poster in the other thread claiming that racist are mentally ill. There no are excuses to his behavior and people like you should be ashamed. He has 50 million subscribers, and he is well aware of who is his audience and things he should and should not say.
 
I will say that when I was a child (I'm not from the US) my only contact with the word and variants was through GTA San Andreas where characters used it just as "dude", so I had no idea it was that kind of implications.
It is also very similar to spanish "negro", which means just black and isn't offensive.

In my case I learned about those implications, don't know exactly where from, maybe from reading forums?
However, I know for a fact that for many people from other countries outside the US this word comes from either rap music or from it being used in movies/video games or so, so they have no idea about it being offensive.

Not justifying him at all, I don't know how much he knows about the full implications, but he should be conscious about how offensive it is for people from the US.
 
This is more or less why I'm quick to mute people in online matches, if not auto-muting everyone outright. I recall when Doomfist was introduced into Overwatch with the all Doomfist mode, it was and wasn't shocking how bad it got in voice chat.
