You like him enough to stick up for him this afternoon, and vouch for his cultural ignorance by way of his nationality, regardless your actual knowledge of his awareness of the word's usage/power.
He knows what the word means, and even if he bought into the notion that changing the syllable at the end of the word was a big enough distinction for him to allow the use of the word in some hypothetical situation, that's obviously not what happened here.
He spit the word out as intended, with full knowledge of what it meant and what he was doing as he said it.

By that logic, anyone could make the claim that it's okay to use a derogatory term not only because they lack the awareness of the meaning of the word, but also because they didn't grow up in country X, Y, Z. I know you're banned, but everyone else should see how absurd that position is.
Moreover, there is a difference between the context of the word in rap songs vs. the context of the word as an insult during some team game. Either way, that doesn't excuse him from using the word at all, because it's ignorant to assume that just because it's used in rap = it's okay to use elsewhere.
