PewDiePie "What a f***ing n*****." out of frustration when his teammate dies.

Media = WSJ and other professional media that hopped on the WSJ story.

Haters = Consumers of the WSJ story who took it at face value and used it as an opportunity to bash "YouTube stars" in general and pile on Pewdiepie specifically.

And so... saying "You fucking n*****!" in a burst of frustration at dying at an inconsequential video game on a Twitch/YouTube stream, thereby violating both their terms of service, on a platform viewed by tens of thousands of people at the time, knowing full well this will be linked elsewhere... is somehow 'getting back' or "trolling" as you put it?

By confirming what respectable, professionally staffed news outlets and informed critics (not 'the media' and 'haters', your language is suspiciously giving him a lot more respect in this instance than those two bodies of people, just saying) are already saying about him?

What a good fucking troll!

What a plan!

Who needed that Disney money back then, eh?

Who needs ad revenue when you're a Youtuber?

Y'know, maybe you're right, this is all an elaborate ploy to get himself elevated to the next platform, doing game reviews at Breibart, seems like he'd fit right in over there.

It's not 2001.

PewDiePie is not someone who got just introduced to voice chat.

He has been called out on his behavior before, but continues to do it, and even makes it worse.

He used it as a direct insult.

He laughed about it.

No, I don't think he would call someone that in person, because he'd be afraid to get a punch in the face.

This is quite literally the definition of trolling.

No offense but even for shock value/shock comedy, why should people get to use the N-word and other slurs freely? I don't think your anecdote bout SOCOM necessarily holds up considering society in general tries to say that these things aren't acceptable, and people are generally cognizant of what certain terms mean.

Unless you live in a racist family I'm not sure any reasonable person would think that the N-word is acceptable in any situation. As far as the anecdotes go...

I played OW a while ago and we needed a healer...so I went Lucio and immediately had someone screaming "Not the N***** boy"...and this continued even when I asked him to shut up and pointed out I was white : /

Ignorance is not an excuse

He shouldn't get a pass this time. His audience is full of young and impressionable people; he fucked up.

This is quite literally the definition of trolling.
I don't get what you are referring to here. Pewdiepie? Your earlier post? My post?

No, saying "fucking n-word" is not "trolling". And certainly not when you are a celebrity broadcasting that to 30.000 people at that moment. It seems trolling for some has become this term you just slap on whatever you say when someone calls you out on it.

We agree on that, but personally i just don't get why someone would get a pass...at all?

Tbh, shock comedy etc isn't really my thing because I just don't get the point of saying something inflammatory or offensive, it never seems funny to me.

I guess we'll see if/what action is taken this time, because I'm kinda skeptical

Monday is here and advertisers/sponsors will be back at work. Unless everyone already left last time, I don't believe he'll come out of this unscathed.

This is quite literally the definition of trolling.

The definition of trolling? It's a parody term for deliberately provoking a reaction out of people, for the intent of your humour. Something you're doing better at, I have to admit, than the incident we're all debating.

This? This was a racial slur.

That is not 'trolling'. That is expressing racism.

The fact you confuse the two with such ease is alarming.

Edit:

I'm referring to your words here - "He has been called out on his behavior before, (which is why I ask you why this isolated incident is the only one worth your scorn, despite researching him)but continues to do it, and even makes it worse."

That's trolling.

No.

This... is called 'being empowered'. He hasn't been punished for past behaviour, so he sees it as acceptable.

Empowered.

Not, trolling.

The fact that you can't see the distinction between these two, despite all that research you did, is more alarming still.

You might want to take some time to fully collect your views on this subject before responding again, think about what you are saying.

The worst part of this debacle is how a bunch of people are all over the internet saying "I don't think this is a big deal" .

These are normal everyday people that people of color work with, go to school with or interact with. People who will smile in someone's face like an ally but really they don't care. There are a lot of people like this all over the place. Willing to accept racist epithets as luls and trolling.

I'm waiting for pewdiepie to respond with the "I'm not American, so the malice is not there when I say it, so it's ok and not racist at all". Then a bunch of defense force will come to his aid because they say shit all the time, but don't want to be called racists for it.

A common response is indeed "Everyone does it!"

As someone who spends a lot of time on voice comms with other "gamers" the n word is depressingly common.

Gamer culture is the fucking worst and speaking out against it just gets you labeled as an SJW, snowflake, PC cuck etc etc. I love the game I play and the core group of friends I play with but the nature of that game involves us working with 100s of others at the same time. And suffice to say, a large, vocal swath of them just love them racial slurs.

I'm honestly too much of a coward to actually fix it on a personal level and I expect trying to be vocal against it will just see me hazed into oblivion.

That a closet racist like that has such a wide reach, especially among the youngsters, is a scary thought.

I'm sad that we have people crawl out of the woodwork that try to defend him, even here on GAF.

He blurted out what he thought, unfiltered, in the heat of the moment. What he said exposes several nasty traits. Not only does he think of black skinned people as something bad or undesirable (otherwise he wouldn't mention them in such a situation), he also uses an infamous racial slur to refer to them as if it was the most natural thing.
Indefensible. That's all it is. Hope he gets his just desserts.

I'm glad I'm staying far away from this twitch/YouTube personality crap. Seems like a bunch of cunts. And not the good kind of cunts.

If it was only that word, chinks, ching-chongs, gooks, frogs, surrender monkeys, japs, and so on.

Weirdly enough, it's only english speakers that are doing that shit.

yup

i just watched the video in OP for context

he clearly says it as part of his normal vocabulary... laughed about it as his brain scrambled over what he just blurted out

57 million subs for a racist shit who speaks directly to kids... fucking great

Mmm, I find that a lot of non-English as a first language dudes also use a fuck load of racial slurs.

This is what happens when you hang around forums or play games where the use of the N word as the highest level of insult has become normalised. People forget they've not posting on their forums using pseudonyms/anonymously anymore. From his response in the video, he's obviously used it before when not streaming publicly.

I know that guy isn't from a place where people understand why that word is obscene. But he's famous enough and has fucked up enough already to have learned why by now.

I'm not defending him for one second. He clearly uses the word as a means to insult someone (whether is be jokingly or not) and he's old enough to know the connotations associated with a white person using that word. He should be banned from YouTube and recognised as the racist that he is.

That being said, does anyone else see that this is likely to become more and more common as time goes on. Rap music is 100% popular mainstream culture now. It's the most common type of music and for children growing up today Rap is the new Pop. And guess what... The word is thrown around so casually in that medium. So what do you say to young children 'thats a bad word that only black people can use because a hundred plus years ago white people kept black slaves?'

My Niece is mixed race. (her Monther is Italian/Mexican and her Father is Irish/Jamaican). She is part black and looks part black... But also looks pretty white too. She listens to nothing but Rap and modern RnB music and hears the word probably 30 times a day casually dropped in music lyrics or by music artists that she likes/looks up to.

As a child I knew it was a bad word but I also very very very rarely heard anyone say it - and when I did hear it, it was shocking (like any other cuss word). Now the word is fucking everywhere. Black people in America took the word and made it their own and made it a part of their culture...but now their culture is mainstream. Now their culture is popular... And I dare to say that maybe in years to come, for this younger generation (young children now) maybe that word will become, just a normal everyday word?

None of that excuses this prick but I'm sure this is going to become more and more common as time goes on. How long before some young child, raised on Rap (maybe someone like my Niece who has some black heritage that isn't so obvious to see for everyone else) casually drops the word thinking it's fine and then catches a savage beating.

I think at this stage in modern society the word should be not used, or used. It should not be in this weird middle ground where half the population can't use it but half can and they can also use it heavily in music that everyone knows is mostly consumed by the other half of the population that can't use the word. It's just a recipe for disatser.

Hey, name one rap or RnB song that uses "nigger".
I am not shocked that you of all people tried to blame music made by black people.

Rap music has been popular for a long ass time

:/

"Nigga" has also been used in movies and music long before rap was huge but people still knew it was racist as fuck.
People still know it is racist but NutJobJim is trying to pull that "If black people would stop using it, so would racists." bullshit.

raised on rap lolol. You make it out like these kids salute the flag to Migos every single morning. Rap music has been around since the 80s and it - at least - began its relevancy in the music genre around the mid-late 90s. Yes, a misinterpreted version of the word is used frequently which is why it is important to educate and let your kids know the meaning behind that word and the offensive version. Just like all the other cuss words used in various music genres. Education Education Education.

How old are you?

I'm willing to bet that rap music also existed when you were growing up, maybe it's just that you didn't listen to it?

First and foremost, there's a great difference between the usage used in cultural, black spheres, and the racist, gung-ho, hard R version that PDP used and is what is being defended by people who think that it's okay to do so. They are entirely different, so arguing from that vantage point is simply not valid.

We've been over this a million times. If you're not black, you're out of the discussion whether you can use it or not. It's that simple. Everyone knows this, but the problem is that some people simply don't care about it. Some rather take their diet racism and blur the clear line that is apparent for all to see, while some goes guns blazing.

Where did you grow up, if you don't mind me asking?

Because here in the UK, I've heard it since childhood, and an endless slew of other racial terms. It has been passed around in conversations and arguments more times than I can remember, and my parents themselves find the word stigmatic ever since their childhood. That's going back 50 years.

Was rap music mainstream back then?

Rap music was mainstream during the 90s, sure.

And no, not in the 50s, but blatant racism sure was pretty damn mainstream in the 50s.

The whole, unaltered, version of the word that pootie said is only a part of black culture in that it's a word white people use to denigrate and insult black people. The only time you'll hear it in a rap song is maybe an interlude or skit or song, involving a white person talking about a black person or how white people see us, which all make clear it's not a word to use.

Thought so.

Isn't that weird? How the usual tripe about rap is always carted out when explaining why so many people seem to have no problem saying that word.

There's a -clear- difference between the way PDP used the term and the way its used, even said in rap music.

If we have to go that route; ofttimes 'nigga' is used as a term of endearment in hip-hop. The hard -er version is NEVER used in hip-hop and like ive said before even among black folks it would be seen as offensive and a weird version of self hate/racism.

If PDP used it in a hip-hop sense/phrasing not gonna say we wouldn't be debating it since he's got a history of pushing racial boundries. But I would at least entertain the argument. He CLEARLY used it as a slur, and a way you would NEVER hear casually in rap music.

What are the chances Felix will come forward with a press release, stating this was all a test to see how the media would react, and that he expected the media to react in this way? lol it’s okay, guys, it was all a praaaaank!

There is a genuine part of me that believes, after having listened back to that clip of him saying this, that he will apologise... for calling people an asshole, and that he didn't mean to do it in a bad way. Legitimately. He says that right after n*****, and he'll key the fuck in on the 'ambiguous hate' argument.

Google news says this has been picked up by major news orgs. Guardian, BBC and many others. Also saying devs like the ones behind Firewatch are going to make copyright claims to force him to pull Pewdiepies videos of him playing their games.

My friend said that if Trump were to get caught saying racial slurs, there will be no defense for him and he would be done. After this. I'm 100% sure people say "it's locker room talk" and trolling.

Fuck man.

Ding ding ding. Trolling has become the bullshit response for saying dumb ass shit and getting away with it.

"He didn't mean it, he was just joking, doing it for the lulz, etc"

My friend said that if Trump were to get caught saying racial slurs, there will be no defense for him and he would be done. After this. I'm 100% sure people say "it's locker room talk" and trolling.

Fuck man.

What do you mean, after this?

He literally joked about molesting women and was just fine, how did it take this to realize you can literally say anything and be fine?
