PewDiePie calls someone a "fucking n****r" during PUBG livestream

When your audience consists of millions of children, normalizing racist and prejudicial comments and viewpoints IS harmful.

These streamers live inside this bubble where they "don't think they're racist" because they're not actively assaulting Deandre Harris in a parking garage or preventing blacks from watching their streams because of their skin colour or because they're not actively throwing racist language out at people with active malice and prejudice.

What they fail to realize is that normalizing this language and reinforcing the misplaced perception that white men are inherently superior or victims of a witch hunt or that "this is something fun to joke about" is that they foster this mentality in their audience. You can't make a livelihood in streaming without being a role model as well. And their audience may very well act out violently - out of malice, fear or aggression - because of the mentality that PewDiePie's harmful words have infused within them.

You can't be a known commodity in the streaming community and then cry foul when you're held accountable to the same public standards of decency that apply to everyone else in entertainment media. This is NOT a double standard. And if a publisher wants to deprive you of the ability to earn revenue because they don't want to be associated with your "brand" of toxicity, more power to them.

Why would you ever think you can say something like that? That's racist as fuck I'm sorry. I can't even type the actually n word without feeling uncomfortable.

It's something with English that let's you swear non stop, so easily it isn't possible in any other language(at least any other I know of). "You guys" are swearing all the time, mostly with the F-word(which funny enough, you used to prove your point). The N-Word is used quite often by black guys on youtube or on tv though, it seems like they get a free pass because they indirectly defame themselves by doing so.

In the end swearing is just childish behavior but in case of pewdiepie it could have also been a publicity stunt to generate clicks.

No, he's definitely on intimate terms with that word. By saying he forgot he was streaming, he admits he uses it regularly when he thinks it's safe.

Dumb people keep saying it was a "heated gaming moment" but he said "nigger" with the composure of someone who hums it while brushing their teeth.

Could be but we should never forget that he is also an actor. That doesn't make what he said any better of course, if anything it makes it even worse.

Fucking Boogie. So desperate to keep the status quo that he'll defend anything.

The way he and TB act, with "both sides" and "media out to get them" is just pathetic.

Had the biggest voices in youtube called out their racist brethren rather than covering for them, then we wouldn't be in this mess.

If there are all these black friends who are ok with it then there would surely be a onslaught of black people coming out of the woodwork to defend this guy. Yet it's always a second hand account.

At this point they all share the same fan pools. I am curious how far this goes because at the end of the day they are betting on the short attention span of the internet to get past this.

I just consider EVERY single one of them that pull this trick out of their hat to be JUST as racist, selfish and inconsiderate as PewDiePie himself.

They choose to defend his words... well, guess what, his words are now YOUR words.
And they can go fuck themselves until they prove otherwise.

I can't possibly believe that all these big yters act like a bunch of fucking immature underage south park fans

AAA video game culture is a mistake

Which is stupid to begin with since last time something like this happened earlier in the year, the Ad-pocalypse started and still is having an effect on everyone today

I don't think it's totally honest to cast him out as an overt, militant racist as it is to put the focus on why people of this generation and this era continue to find this word okay to use in casual conversation. We can probably easiest presume Pewdiepie lives in a social circle where using this word casually is simply okay amongst friends. This is not to excuse his behavior, just to explain how it happened. My presumption is that like many before him, his guard was down and he let it out without thinking because this is a word that is not taboo to use amongst his friends. It is used facetiously, almost as an additional curse word, but one that is a little more "effective" just because of the reaction it gets in non-satirical contexts.

Is Pewdiepie racially sensitive? Clearly he is not. Is he overtly racist--someone that hopes and wishes for black people to be harmed, socially or physically? I don't think so and I don't think he's trying to hurt a black person by using the word. My guess is that, like with his nazi-infused content of the past, he simply uses these words in the same vein as South Park has with slurs and pejoratives--but without understanding the purpose those words serve there.

In other words, Pewdiepie is just not a good role model. I think of him, his approach, and content as tasteless and childish with no redeeming entertainment value of any kind. But, I also don't think of him as a racist with some sort of ulterior motive. Much more likely is the fact he's simply immature.

A) It's not "something with English". What are you talking about? Iirc Hungarian and Russian are the best "languages for swearing".

B) swearing is not something childish. It's a fully valid functional part of any language with an important role.

C) the n-word isn't just a "swear". It's a racially charged slur. It's discriminatory language. Language that was used to belittle and marginalise black people for centuries.

Swearing is most commonly used as an exclamation. That's not how PDP used the n-word or its origin.

There's more to racism than just the KKK levels of overtness.

That's also a pretty big component too. Sadly.

When my kids grow up I'm not yet sure what I'll do to keep this shit out of their lives. Maybe it's time for a "not racist or homophobic" youtube network. Not joking.

I'm not really sure what you've seen that would make you give him the benefit of the doubt, or why you think "he's not racist, just stupid" is somehow better.

To use the word casually is to actively harm black people socially. It is a racist word. Saying racist shit makes you a fucking racist.

This isn't an isolated incident. There was the last time he did racist stuff and the time before that. His videos reiterate alt right talking points and he encourages followers to check out the originals.

Don't know what could make a person an actual racist if thats not enough.

Oh my god I send that without finishing the sentence

" Words are just words until you got them."

Thats the main problem of this topic, you can't be serious about that sentence because theres not a equivalence to white people, even if it is, is not as spread as the n word. So that argument is damn baseless and pure shit.

I don't know why that's so spread

Love how the guy's defense is "Well, I was thinking of the worse insult possible"... As if in his eyes , being black is the worse thing in the world.

After the nazi fiasco cost him so many fans and big contracts, one would think the guy would get a hint.... But I guess you can't film some racist guy without him eventually having him crack and be himself.

Yep, just because Pewdiepie doesn't want black people to die, doesn't mean he's not racist.

Racism has a ton of different levels, and they're all bad. Especially for someone who is supposed to be a rolemodel for millions of kids.

But to tldr: any youtuber who defends this shit either shares those views or is a fucking coward too protective of their gravy train to take a stand.

Or both.

It does't matter what his intent was even though his intent was to use it as an insult. His actions were still racists. I wouldn't give him the benefit of the doubt honestly. Plenty of "good people" have racist ideas and/or say racist things. It's just has likely that he harbors some ill ideas and attitudes about race subconsciously or consciously. We needn't make the criteria of racism so high where you have to be actively caught burning a cross on a black person's law or you get caught with a white hood in your closet. Sometimes a dude just has shitty ideas floating in his head.

I somehow have a feeling you only hold this viewpoint when the words don't apply to you.

Who knows, I wouldn't be offended if he had called some avatar in a video game a "fucking white pig" or worse, I would just shake my head because of his immaturity, like I'm doing right now too.

People jumping up and down because of this is actually of benefit to him, youtube doesn't differentiate between thumbs down and thumbs up, as long as you get a reaction or just a view you are doing well as a youtuber, as a streamer. From what I've seen his popularity was declining and he doesn't really have many views on his newer videos for someone with 50+ million subscribers.

If this had been his only infraction you *may* have a point. But couple this with his follow up with making jokes about it without issuing an apology *and* his whole run of anti-semitic nazi jokes, PDP doesn't deserve anything close to the benefit of the doubt

People show you who they are, and PDP has been showing us for *awhile*

It's a really lame excuse and it's interesting that it shows up so frequently all of a sudden. Same with "in Europe people don't know it's a bad word". Fuck that shit. Every kid who went to an even remotely competent school had american slavery and european colonialism as subjects.
People who bring that shit up definetly aren't serious about it.

You tell them black people aren't a monolith and he keep that behind closed doors with his black friend

I cannot comprehend why some of you keep giving this guy the benefit of the doubt when he keeps doing the same thing

It's fucking baffling

"Words are just words."

Yep, it's totally just a simple word, better not give it any power, right?

I guess because I personally worked my fucking ass off throughout my life to become an attorney, and yet a homeless white man passing me on the street can say "your fancy suit doesn't matter, you are just a dirty nigger monkey," I guess I'm not supposed to feel angry and give that word power.
and this is a true fucking story and even a year later, it still fucking bothers me.

But hey, PDP was "just joking," I mean, who hasn't defaulted to a fucking racial slur when people world-fucking-wide know, or should know how and why that word was used to basically demean a subset of people as something sub-human because of their skin color, when playing goddamn video games?

Man, people like Boogie can get fucked with this "shock humor" excuse.

luulubuu is definitely mocking the tweets here

Yes, thanks for getting my back, in fact I just forgot about to finish all the comment through, but anyways thanks

Go to a black person and call them a "fucking n****r". Report back what happens.

Man, I wouldn't, I don't even understand why someone will use that word at all, I only have respect for people.

Sarcasm right?

No! Just forgot, sorry!

Not really ;_; I mean, I dont think sarcasm should be a thing in this subject either in this context, we are all grown people here

Lets argue about this, but first, were you serious?

No need because I didnt finish the sentence and thats totally my fault; my original message was to mock that sentence, because words are exactly that words, but the meaning of the words can change stuff and shape what we are seeing and living.

If not, look at this guy and how the media and the industry shaked for just one single word.

Okay, words are words, but theres the tone, the meaning, the story behind the word and of course, who says it because no matter what he does to rebrand himself, he still has kids in his audience and he is not properly diclousing adult or mature content, or even for teenagers, he still has kids watching him and enabling such a behaviour knowing your target audience is just despicable and wrong.

LOL you better go edit the post too... oh boy.

I did, lawl, like I'm giving a speech for pages about how racist slurs are bad and only people who are affected by them should use it to reappropiate them and give a proper positive meaning and adress issues based on the slur itself, and THEN i get banned because I'm stupid.

It's a really lame excuse and it's interesting that it shows up so frequently all of a sudden. Same with "in Europe people don't know it's a bad word". Fuck that shit. Every kid who went to an even remotely competent school had american slavery and european colonialism as subjects.

Really, even if you consumed a little of media with adult audiences in mind, is most probably you ended up hearing it, even if its a joke context. However, PDP in this case used it in a very weird glimpse and it shows he is either using it for publicity and marketing stunt or he is used to use it in privacy and just fucked up.

Either way, is just wrong.
