Definitely probable. Personally I don't think we see Smash until Nintendo's online plan rolls out next year, but I did find that interesting.

If there's any reason not to announce Smash now, it's that they really don't need to with Mario coming around the corner. They can easily save it for a Direct early next year, or even next year's E3.

Or, if we're getting a completely new Smash, it might be even longer.
 
If there is a new Smash, I just really hope they don't add more random 3rd party characters unless they're the random 3rd party characters that I specifically want. Give me Arms and A platoon.

Nintendo has bought Scalebound from Microsoft, and is rebooting it as a new Metroid where you play as Samus controlling a giant Ridley. Hideki Kamiya is back at the helm, and hosting this Direct, and he'll tell us the release date eight times and direct us to his Twitter for any further questions.
 
Speaking of FPS, I'm actually kinda shocked that Activision hasn't greenlit Call of Duty...something, for the console. Hell, I think a port of Black Ops 2 might do the trick. :P

That's because many who spout those claims have no idea how game development actually works. The base game usually completes development way before it actually ships to stores. Now there are things like last-minnute updates, aka Day One patches, and the games as a service model where the game is never truly finished. But everything involving the core product is typically completed ahead of time. BotW's DLC was announced about 2 weeks before the game was released. By that point, everything regarding the core game content was already finished. Mario + Rabbids, same deal, except it's DLC was announced merely days before it was released. If it was cut content from the game, then Nintendo could've shown us everything about the DLC when they announced it, hell they could've released it day one if they wanted to. But the gap between announcement of the content and the release automatically shoots down that claim.

If Nintendo were to announce Mario Odyssey DLC, then early October, probably late September will be a good time to do so. By then, the main game is completely finalized and prepped for shipping.
 
Here's hoping for Donkey Kong Country: K. Rool's Return announced for early 2018 from Retro and David Wise.

Would love an Ace Attorney 7 announcement/tease, too.
 
Bomberman and/or a Belmont over Snake any day, definitely.

And I saw mention that Sakurai once claimed he doesn't want to make a Kid Icarus sequel? Damn, I never played Uprising and was hoping a sequel would come out eventually... I seriously hope he reconsiders that idea considering he said that a long time ago.
 
I might be in the minority on this, but I would love more Wii U remasters.

I have a soft spot for the Wii U, but I understand most people didn't care for the hardware. It's a crying shame, then, that so many excellent games are exclusive to it. I'd love for almost all of them to come up to the Switch and find a new audience.

If any Wii U remasters are announced in this direct, I anticipate Smash 4 and DKC: Tropical Freeze.

Do non-first party games ever get premiere announcements in directs? Because the pie in the sky dream would be Bayonetta 3.
 
Just don't get your hopes up and then get pissed your high expectations wound up crashing. Hype is a dangerous thing.

Keep those expectations low and you don't have to worry about a long fall.

I don't see him coming back. The only reason he got in was because Kojima literally begged for it, and not only did Kojima go on to do fuck all for Nintendo since then, he and Konami are not on the best of terms. It would be kinda tasteless to bring him back tbh.
 
I think the time is ripe to announce some Switch ports to fill out Q1 and Q2.

Smash Bros Deluxe from Nintendo
Bayo Deluxe from Platinum
Donkey Kong Country Returns + Tropical Freeze Deluxe from Retro
Tokyo Mirage Sessions Deluxe from Atlus

Stuff they can enhance and remaster in the short term to fill out their release schedule while the studios work on new entries for the long term.

Well Kojima and Sakurai are friends and have a lot of respect for each other. I think Kojima trusts Sakurai to handle Snake respectfully. He was pretty happy with his portrayal in Brawl, wasn't he? And that was with them having to make changes to avoid messing up the rating too badly.

If Konami started making demands about how Snake should be portrayed and dictating too much of his role, then yeah, that wouldn't be too hot. But Sakurai has enough clout at this point that most developers and publishers trust him when it comes to handling their creations. I think Kojima would be happy to see that there's someone treating his series with respect.

Well, Sakurai said that he actually enjoyed DLC Development because it's not so taxing on him. Basically he have easy development with DLC contents rather than base roster development.

If he's working on an original project ala Kid Icarus Uprising, that could lead credence to a Smash 4 Deluxe (like how we got MK8D while that team was working on ARMS), but I'd say that would throw a wrench into the idea of an all new full fledged Smash game coming out, unless Nintendo had the courage to get a new director to fill in his shoes.

Hard not to be happy when he was the one directly overseeing the character. Konami would probably not want his influence anywhere near Snake and that'd be too much crap for Sakurai to deal with.

Nothing of value is lost here. He stood out like a sore thumb back then and he'd stand out now just as much.

It's hard to say but really, this is a totally hypothetical situation you're coming up with. There's not a lot suggesting it's the only course of action that'll ever happen.

I figured part of the point of Smash Bros. was the novelty of having all these characters from such drastically different backgrounds and art directions all together in one place. No one sticks out more than anyone else.
