PewDiePie "What a f***ing n*****." out of frustration when his teammate dies.

It's Philip DeFranco. Anyone expecting him to do anything decent has not been paying attention. He's yet another "both sides are as bad as each other, I'm the sensible intelligent guy in the middle" which always coincidently leaves him defending the alt right and gamergate whilst attacking the left. He's a complete and utter shit, and it's frustrating how that act goes down so well with so many people.

He literally says:
"I am biased, I have defended him in the past"
"I'm extremely disappointed and I'm disgusted at the use of that word like that"
"Do I think that he's racist? No"
"Do I think that he should have said it? No"
"When you do this, it looks like you are signing off to the use of that word"
"It's fucked up and you can't be surprised that people are offended"
"If he accidentally said that word in live stream, does it mean that he is likely using it in his regular life? Yes"
"But doesn't it mean that he's racist, if he is using that word in regular life? I don't know"

This is the only video of him that I have watched and there is nothing in it that warrants such reaction.
There are no "both sides" in his story either.

Nobody wants to take a hardline stance and call him a racist.

Also DeFranco is garbage. He has a history of harassment.

I think this is the video that's being referenced.

I like how he starts with "I grew up around ignorant people." Well Boogie dude, you are one of them.

Tolerate as long as they don't run for office, in a hiring position, beating people up. But they are, Boogie. They are. And the fact that you advocate we need to tolerate people with those disgusting believes, makes them get away with it.

And you are not undoing that damage. What are you going to do? Start a new stream and play both sides again. Well, that sure worked. This guy doesn't get it all. He is just looking out for his friends and income.

PDP is arguably like that, 50m subs massive following dude has huge influence he has more subs on youtube than Donald trump has followers on twitter.

So boogies point completely falls apart when you look at it. if PDP was some random nobody then people wpuld jsut be saying "yeah this is shit" and life would move on. its precisely becuase of his popularity that people are calling him out so much (and rightfully so) and this popularity also lends him a tonne of defenders because someone will defend anything they like.

Man that kid had me rolling my eyes so hard, also he looks like a young version of andre black nerd lol.

Yeah thats what we are dealing with here though. Even people on here are potentially 15 years old if not younger. Defending PDP because they like him. Like the host says the kid has Stockholm syndrome.

"Tolerate intolerance" is such fucking bullshit. Racists and bigots, by definition, do not tolerate the people they hate. People using racist slurs are not to be tolerated, because the racial slurs, by definition, demean and show intolerance to another group of people.

And boogie seems to be very adamant about that...if it concerns him, personally. If people fat-shame, boy howdy, he will call them out, stop calling them a friend and condemn them.
Meanwhile, here is talking about how people do "very bad things", how they are vindictive with their outrage and think they are the "good guys". And he is not talking about his White Supremacist friend Jontron. He is talking about the people offended by him. He also talks about how he "can't fault Jontron for trying to figure it out for himself and think about it himself instead of swallowing a narrative".

He defends racists like Jontron or people using racist slurs like PewdiePiew (I'm differentiating here because I know otherwise that's going to overshadow the rest of the post), while not agreeing with them, but it's totally OK for them to have these opinion and talk like that. Where is that understanding centrist position in regards to fat shaming?

Boogie is an ignorant fool who thinks all he cares about is other people and everyone's well-being, but who is actually incapable of looking past his own experiences. If a topic doesn't concern him personally he will 100% straddle the fence. Only when he personally suffers, then will he condemn people and call them out. It's insincere and hypocritial - and kinda disgusting.

No kidding. That he completely doesn't see this blatant contradiction within his views is beyond ridiculous and shows up how little he understands what hes talking about, It just shows that there are very few actual centrists, however the many that claim to be are plainly willfully ignorant.

Phil is 100% safe centrist trash, but even a broken clock is right once in a while. He whines about "SJWs" like that's a legitimate social category and everything. Don't be fooled; Meeting the bare minimum of acknowledging that using the n-word is bad isn't terribly worthy of the benefit of the doubt and anyone that's doing due diligence will examine the context of this situation anyway - that PDP is VERY comfortable using the n-word - and thus the possibility he might well be racist. No one is obligated to assume it's just gamer lingo bullshit. He hasn't earned that chance and none of the other nerds that pull this shit have either.

This is where he fucked up, and is really wrong. Using a racial slur as a pejorative makes the user a racist, full stop, end of story.

Yes, if you randomly say n*gg*r and probably say it all the time, you're a fucking racist

If shouting the n word out as an insult at someone doesn't make you a racist then what the fuck does?

Nothing. There is literally *nothing* that actually counts as racism nowadays apparently, because being called a racist is the most evil and worst thing in the entire world.

People who were carrying burning torches chanting "Jews will not replace us" were fine people, and peoples concerned about their heritage and the beautiful parks. People who scream the N word as an insult are just kids (27 year old kids apparently!) in the heat of the moment.

There is nothing that can't be hand waved away as not being racism.

He's still a massive tsundere for us. Constantly namedrops GAF in his videos.

..and twitters, too!

I know you're probably reading this, Boogie, and I hope you finally stop and take a hot second to really take a look in the mirror and actually consider there could be some truth in what most of us say. Nobody's inherently a _bad_ person, there's plenty of former Gamergate-"Fans", Anti-Feminists, Anti-Social Justice guys and all around dicks who made the jump to work on themselves, to pick up on criticism instead of ignoring it, and to make themselves better persons. Me included.

Very few people on here legit "hate" you. Most just hate the standpoint you put yourself into. Being fat-shamed all the time, getting confused with your alter ego, you made clear you don't like that. You don't meet on common ground if someone calls you a fat, neckbeard fuck, do you. It's not funny.
Now imagine you'd be black. Just imagine you'd have to put up with that shit for years and decades, not only on the internet but in real life (but also, very much so, on the internet). Not because your behavior, not because of your weight that you brought on yourself, but because you look different since you were born.
Would you still say "let's meet in the middle"? Would you still say "hey, they don't mean it as a racial insult, it's just a regular insult, they speak of their mind and that's good"?

I wouldn't think so, man.

I wasn't around yesterday -- have there been any actual consequences from this beyond the initial few YouTubers complaining they might lose money?

I have used a similar racial slur when I was younger because I thought it was edgy and funny, in hindsight I realise how disgusting it was.

Does this make me a racist?

I'm not giving him any views.

Can somone give a more detailed summary?

(paraphrase)

"when I hear other players using it, I always think they're immature"
"I hate that I fed into that part of gaming"
"heat of the moment"
"slipped out"
"I'm disappointed in myself"
"No excuses"
"seems like I've learned nothing from past controversies"
"I'm an idiot"
"it was not okay"
"sorry if I offended anyone"
"I should know better, not for myself, but for anyone who looks up to me"

No one can know your soul but you.

Sounds like you used to say racist things and were okay with racism back when you were younger but that is no longer the case.

That apology video just doesn't respect the gravity of what he said. Not once does he actually say "I said the n-word" and he never demonstrates that he understands how wrong and hurtful it is or the baggage it brings. It's all about him and how he feels about it and how he wants to be better, but little about actually empathizing with how the people who watch him and are affected by his actions feel and are materially worse off for it.

The thing about saying "there is no excuse" is that you don't have to account for your history. You can just say "I'm an idiot, I did the worst thing," never actually own up to the specific event, and can "make progress going forward."

Fuck that. PewDiePie said the n-word (twice on that stream!) and faggot.

Surprised that so many on here that are usually no nonsense had never seen straight through Boogie before. He's been this way for a long ass time.

This is a much larger problem on the internet, and Boogie is like the poster boy for it. A complete lack of perspective, an inability to put one's self in others' shoes. Only when something hits home, even something as trivial as a fucking review score, do they say "Hold up now, what?"

Not anymore, because you regret it. As a kid in Spain, I saw the word as a "cool" slang word (The way many black people use it, without the -R) that could be used to joke about "gangsta" hip hop types. I knew the origin was a racial pejorative but never thought joking with that word (Mostly with my brother) would be painful, especially being in another country and as long as it wasn't used in front of black people.
Then I learned how painful it is, and it's history beyond the times of slavery. (There is a lot of ball licking of American society overseas, but that's another story) Now I never use it, and feel terribly uncomfortable when I think about using it as a punchline. Ignorance sucks.

The problem with Pewdiepie is that he has been called out many times but cannot connect the dots between his discriminatory slurs and the pain of discriminated people. To him, the people being offended look the same way as he does and have had all the same experiences. And that neglet of the existence of minorities is... Racism.

how does monetization work on Youtube?

Do you just toggle a switch for every video you put up, and then ads get put on it?

or is it like a global setting, where all your videos get monetized?

You can set a default status for it. You can always change monetization granularly.

Individual if i remember correctly, but you can put a default
Edit: too slow

Thank you. Also fuck him.

"sorry if I offended anyone"
That right there is fucking obnoxious.

Looks like a lot happened when I went to bed. YouTube now specifies and allows ad companies to opt-out of Video Game Livestreams while PewDiePie pulls a Frankie Hollingsworth "I'm sorry if you felt offended" apology.

lol

"Sorry to everyone that I've offended" would have been better, but "Sorry if I offended anyone" is borderline refusing to admit wrongdoing, or at least, it's definitely a failure to acknowledge that what you did IS offensive and understand why it's offensive.

Anyway, I wouldn't have believed even a better-worded apology from this guy because it's clear he doesn't give a shit.

Pointless to pick apart the exact wording of the video, it's clear from the context of it that his intention is to say he isn't brushing it off or trying to claim people shouldn't be offended, he's accepting he fucked up and intends to do better.

Whether or not you believe his apology is sincere is completely up to you but claiming that because he said 'if' he doesn't mean it is just misrepresenting his statement.

Personally I'm inclined to believe he is sorry and that he intends to do better, but given the fact that this is the second one of these videos he's made this year, I'm also inclined to believe him when he says that he's an idiot. I don't have much faith that he'll be successful in his endeavours.
