DigitalFoundry analysis of DOOM for Nintendo Switch

Looks great, and they've done tremendous work here. Actually stunned that people were expecting 60fps, clearly not the mission here for a handheld version of DOOM.

Seems like they could maintain anything from a technical point of the actual game.

I don't say I can call it a good port :(

Another point to mention from the video is that the press only got to play in undocked mode. Like I mentioned in the other thread, I doubt it'll bring it up to 60, but we don't know yet what kind of extra bells and whistles the docked version will have comparatively speaking.

30fps is disappointing but believable. Less than 540p docked sounds fishy though, I'll wait until they take a look at the final game.

Did what? 🤔

The video as a whole was comparing the Switch specs to an exact build they created to run Doom. Essentially the Switch performed a fair number of things better than the build they made and they're impressed that it can run a decent Doom port in its form factor.

I really wish people on this forum would just enjoy videogames instead of video game performance. "No 60fps, no buy!!!1!one1!".

Jesus christ. 30FPS is fine. It's absolutely fine.

And that it gets really choppy on some of the more demanding levels.
I think that was in relation to the PC build they meant to emulate Switch specs with, not the Switch version itself. He said that he got to try a variety of arcade stages on the Switch version and while they had performance drops, none were as severe as the low specced PC version.

Even as low as DOOM looks, it's still a great title for Switch which really has no Fps games at this point. A little unfortunate that DOOM will have to be docked in order to keep a stable performance.

Did I miss something in that video?

Bloke said he'd seen a few cut scenes on the switch, but then spent the rest of the time playing the game on his custom built PC?

Lower textures and 540p/30fps damn.

I was never even impressed with DOOM's graphics last year

Wolfy 2 will harder to port/optimize considering it's much better looking imo.

Video has been removed because the game is actually 60fps.

Seriously though as if 30fps wasn't bad enough, the graphics have been drastically reduced too.

I was expecting drastically reduced graphics so they could hit 60fps lol

Why do people assume you can just change your pixel count and adjust the framerate accordingly, every damn time.

THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS.

Heck, even massively reducing visual complexity in other areas, meshes shaders etc etc some times has zero effect on framerate.

It uses dynamic resolution... it will probably stay higher docked with same bells and framerate of undocked.

Lower than Low spec settings at a fluctuating 30fps. Woof.

He mentions this is in handheld mode, and keeps performance up better than the PC he built which emulates docked switch clocks, basically twice as fast - rather impressive actually. The docked switch should perform significantly better.

I'm not interested in buying either port but I love me some port analysis.

Anyone else unable to watch this video in DE ( Germany )?

Strange, I have never had this problem with DF videos before! :(

oh, it must have been DMCA'd or such if I read above. So strange, I cannot remember that ever happening for DF vids before.

I think it is completely fine to have those performance preferences, especially in the FPS genre. Doom, next to Titanfall, is probably the fastest FPS on consoles... it really needs that extra fludity in motion and responsiveness.

540p/30fps

Borderlands 2 Vita indeed.

People were fooling themselves thinking this would open the gates for direct AAA ports of current gen games. Anyone could see this coming a mile away. There's no way the Switch hardware can run current gen games like Doom without making them Mortal Kombat / Borderlands 2 Vita tier.

The dream is dead. And this is Doom. Can't even begin to imagine how FFXV would be. Square needs to stop talking utter nonsense and get on FFVII.

30 fps is generally fine for third person games and other genres but first person shooters are headache-inducing for me at that framerate.

Honestly, would never sacrifice graphics and performance for portability for a game like Doom, and even Wolfenstein. It's cool that they are coming, but there are better suited options for me.

Edit: Anyway, where the hell is that video?

Even ignoring the 30 fps cap, if you listen carefully what DF says in the video, it is not a good port. At least not in undocked mode.

When you need to call Switch a tablet to excuse the quality of the port you know that things are pretty bad.
