I love it when I haven’t slept well all night, then I hear a slight noise - that is probably the neighbours, or our washing machine kicking in - and my subconscious brain suddenly sets off alarm bells. “It could be the delivery guy knocking on your door!” So you bolt out of bed, rush downstairs and unlock the door to find nobody there.

Bonus points if the neighbours across the road are standing on their front step having a cigarette, watching your dishevelled, bed haired lump suddenly swing the front door open for apparently no reason

First game I booted up to play was Super Mario Kart. Having to adjust to the controls again was a bit rough but I still remembered all the shortcuts from when I put hours into the game as a kid.

I also realized that the bad habits I developed while playing this game as a kid (all gas, hop when you need to, brakes don't exist) came rushing back. I was also reminded that power sliding is not a thing in this game lol.

Need to do a round of 50cc Star Cup before jumping into 100cc cups. I'm a bit scared for 150cc...

I did live chat, and the best that the rep gave me was $5 and my shipping date possibly moved earlier.

They claimed to have moved my date to before October 9th.

Not too shabby I guess. For anyone that has a pre-order with them, contact their support!
 
Picked up two (since that was what I pre-ordered) and gifting one to my cousin. Got some playing done last night.

Impressions so far: the face buttons feel a bit loose, the controller ports were a mystery at first and the glaring omission of Chrono Trigger are the only negatives. The games are great, the interface is great and this really is the best way to experience these games currently. Star Fox hasn’t aged well, the rest have though.
 
Was too tired to really get into anything last night, even falling asleep during the intro of Super Metroid. Today I'm well rested though, so time for some good old fashioned early 90s classics. I'm thinking an area or two of SMW then the start of an RPG, probably FFVI given how good everyone always says it is.
 
Welp. Got drunk with my friend. Played some Mario Kart, Dankey Kang, Street Fighter II and a bunch of Contra.

I also learned that no matter what I did, I can't do Guile's Sonic Boom attack at all- even after looking up tutorials for it.

I don't see why it would, its designed to use those ports.
 
Boy, I don't remember some of the slowdown being THAT bad. Super Ghouls n Ghosts tends to particularly crawl by in parts. Makes it even harder than it already is.
 
After multiple pages of no one mentioning the NES having issues with staying plugged in 24/7, and no one having even ideas about why the SNES manual would say the system should be powered off and then unplugged to avoid malfunctions and/or data corruption, I'm going to guess it truly doesn't matter.

Like, I've done embedded systems software development where data corruption due to power loss was an issue and I don't have a good theory.

The only thing I can think of is that if power flickered off and on a few times when the system was off but plugged in, it would auto-power on or something and corrupt data? That just seems unlikely to me.

We had a hilarious case where the slowdown saved us in Super Mario World last night. It was super smooth until the very last screen of a level. The person playing accidentally jumped off Yoshi, yelled because they thought they were totally screwed and were about to hit 3+ enemies and a charging Chuck...but the game slowed down because of all the enemies. They landed back on Yoshi, avoided every enemy, and even hit the ribbon in dramatic slow motion on the way out.
 
got mine today (australia). spent 7hrs on earthbound already - what a game! the reset/save state function doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as lots of reviews went on about. still, i wish the controller cords were slightly longer.

my box also seems to be missing the poster which is a bummer but not end of the world.

so you shouldn't leave it plugged in? what about in the usb in your tv? the tv isn't on so no issue right?

It depends if the TV powers its USB ports when the TV is turned off. I haven't tested our TV to see if this is the case.

According to the paper manual, you should power the system off (you will see the SHUTTING DOWN text which will goes away), and then unplug it. Otherwise, says the manual, there might be malfunction or data corruption. No one has any idea why though, other than Nintendo erring on the side of great caution.
 
Sheesh! Mario Kart sucks! Mario Kart Advance is the only MK for me!

Whos to blame for the cheating AND boring AI that has unlimited firepower and always finishes in the exact same order barring any last split second item damage o.o?

I did like the feather item, sadly missing in later entries.

In my opinion N64 Mario Kart was great, as is MK8 and I think at least one of the DS Mario Karts.
 
Can't wait for Digital Foundry's review to see if the slowdown is worse than the original console. When I get the chance I might also hook up my original SNES and compare myself.
 
Does anyone who hacked their NES know if you do a backup of the original games, then put your own games on it, did it back up your original saves too (so if you put the original back on, your saves were there too)?

Starting these long games then realising your saves vanish it putting me off playing stuff now.
 
Anyone playing this on a large 4K TV? How good does it look? I know about the upscaling advantage of 720p to 4K vs 1080, and I'd like to read first hand impressions.

Edit: Just received my SNES Mini from Amazon UK. That was pretty fast (especially considering that I had to wait for two weeks to receive a package from GAME before).

First game beat. Only on normal but I don't have time for anything harder. I recall the game being pretty unforgiving even on normal but it wasn't too bad. Only real problem was M. Bison, he beat me about 4 times.

I think its going to depend on the TV. I remember reading about how 720p signals on some sets get a slight blur applied to them or something.
 
I beat Starfox 2 and...it's shorter than I thought it'd be.
But I guess it's made for multiple playthroughs anyway, so I'm not complaining.
It was fun playing it. Way more than Starfox 1 to be honest.
Bummer that Nintendo chose to cancel it back then. Would've probably sold a lot.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe a Dolphin bar might do the trick. You'd also need a wiimote though.
(I'm not aware of any adapter for the wired stuff alone, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to just go for a SNES USB pad if that's what you want after all)

Remember, Nintendo said to not stop the GameCube discs from spinning after it shuts off. This is just abundance of caution.
