Has any game in same genre topped ZOE2 yet?

My friend introduced me this game back in the day and I have to say this is the game that made me begged my mom to buy me a PS2.

It's one of the few titles that I rated 10/10. Gameplay, Music, Controls, Boss fight, Story, Framerate, Artstyle, Atmosphere. Everything is perfect, it was made by the right people at the right time (the other being Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne). My only complain is it's too short.

Now it's almost 15 years after its release and I tried some gundam and Armored Core games but it didn't satisfy me. Sure there are some aspect that other games do better, but overall package nothing came close to ZOE2.

No, but that's mostly because very few mech games even attempt the same style of gameplay as ZOE had. The game is still fun as hell. Closest thing to it would probably be something like Gundam Extreme Vs. or something.

Exactly, we just don't get that many mech games period let alone the super high speed style that ZOE2 damn near perfected. It's a niche of a niche, unfortunately.

Also, I didn't realize it's been nearly 15 years since ZOE2's release. Damn.

I should really try playing it again. I finished it in the PS3 collection, and I remember enjoying it, but none of it hooked me the way it seems it did others.

I feel comfortable in saying that ZOE2 is still the best single player mech game, much like how Godhand is still the best single player "martial arts" beat em up

it's been a while since I played ZOE2, but while I really like the game, I don't remember the game mechanic to be anything too deep. the presentation is what that give you that feeling of satisfaction of playing a high speed mech action.

one of my favorite moment in the game is the vector cannon, and that is basically just holding the button while the really cool weapon is charging up.

I'd love to see someone made Gundam Versus style gameplay but in epic single player story and add the flashy cinematic presentation of ZOE2.

It all comes down to what you prefer at the end of the day. I would argue that ZoE 2 and Armored Core are on a similar level in terms of how well put together they are, and that your main metric for preference between the two of them is which set of things you value more:
  • Sleek, sexy Japanese-ass mecha that play like ice-skating fighter jets, designed with aesthetics always taking precedence over realism, airdashing and teleporting around each other while violins play in the background
or
  • machine-of-war mecha that feel like they cost taxpayer money to build throwing near-realistic rocket barrages at each other from artillery distance until, eventually, they run out of ammo and go stab the other guy with a laser to get it over with.
ZoE 2 is one of my favorite games ever made, cause that's the edge of the mech genre that I like. I want as much of the balls-to-the-wall Gurren Lagann aesthetic in my game as possible. I don't want a giant railgun that costs so much money to fire that I only brought three bullets, as cool as that definitely is. I want the Vector Cannon. But yeah, there's plenty of reason to love either one.

Dunno if I'd say it tops it but I had just as much fun with it.

i remember seeing a zoe2 review when the game originally came out in gamepro with a very low score which they didn't even devoting a entire page for. something that was reserved for a page filler review not a high budget game.

i tried to find the review again but all that exists is the entry in metacritic http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-2/zone-of-the-enders-the-2nd-runner/critic-reviews

anyways i still remember that feeling of being so completely baffled by it because at that time zoe2 felt like alien technology and a generation ahead of games of that era.

Oh man, this game. A true gem.
It was made by the Gran Turismo developers, right?
I finished it many many many times. Really good high speed Mech Action.

Edit:

I remember playing some japanese Xbox 360 demos. There was one game which copied the Zone of the Enders gameplay. Don't remember the name. It was like Zone of the Enders, but with Animu Kids.

The only directly comparable game I can think of is Gundam: Encounters in Space, which I had a lot of fun with when I was younger. But no, I don't think it's better than ZOE2, unless you factor in the massive amount of Gundam fanservice.

ZOE2 VR will probably top it though :)

Barely anyone even attempted a game in this style. Gundam games are out there, but they tend to skew towards being more conventional action games, with Extreme VS focusing on head-to-head arena combat.

Sidenote: If ZOE 2 was made today, you'd hear lots of people complaining about "unintuitive" controls because of the game's dash / dodge system.

It’s a great game but far from ’perfect’, for one it would greatly benefit from an actual combo system and some of the levels were pretty simple.

It’s a game where the presentation often comes before the game play.

I still love it, I saved the fucking 65 euros it cost in finland back then... took forever.

It really depends how specific you want to be about the genre. If you broaden out to "high-speed action sci-fi games" in general, then you get competitors like Metal Gear Rising or the Assault Suits series.

There really haven't been many direct challengers to ZoE2's gameplay style, though.

It's in a league of its own. Even when you compare it to the original game, the two feel so different that they might as well be two different series.

ZOE2 is one of my favorite games from my childhood and I believe it is up there with some of the greatest games of all time.

From my experience, i liked A.C.E 2 and 3 much better than ZOE2 lol.

And Gundam Climax U.C provide even better experience especially if u are a huge Gundam fans.^_^

Can wait to play this. Loved ZOE1 as a nice bonus with the MGS2 demo.

Best nothing but great stuff about 2.

Oh my gosh you guys need some help here huh

Hands down the best mech game on ps2 in my honest opinion. This series took the ZOE gameplay and applied to several real robot type series and the end result was glorious.

The combat went quickly depend on the suit and you had different finishers for the basic combo string that each suit gets. the combat even allows you to end your melee string early by dashing in the middle of it. If the hit was strong enough to kill you'd get these cool camera angles where you see the enemy's halves drift apart as you fly away.

The suits are also kept to scale and it really helps the immersion. Suit roster selection is the freaking best and theres a lot of suits that normally would get over shadowed. Macross is in here too!
(I said this a real robot series but the snuck in shin getter robo and it's antagonist and they are HUGE since everything is kept to scale)
high level play would be just as good as ZOE. The only knock I have against it is the graphics it accomplishes a lot otherwise.
