My experiences with the SNES Mini Classic so far:
Just at arrival of the console, I played through Super Metroid...twice. Once with 100% of all items (took me around 3:40 h) and after that with the normal any % route in around 1:13 h. It was my first time playing this game with the original SNES controller, since before I only had the VC versions on the Wii and Wii U and it felt even better! It's still the masterpiece it always has been and I'm glad I got my fix.

The biggest next project for me will be my first playthrough of Final Fantasy VI which I haven't played before, but have been told how good it was. It's the JRPG that I wanted to play for the longest time by now and I'm so glad it's included. Due to my usual RPG pace this will probably last me till winter. Nothing more cozy to have a good JRPG through the rainy fall days! <3

I will probably mix this up with a couple of Jump 'n Run games that I will occasionally boot up - foremost Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Mega Man X. I finished the first two games before on the Virtual Console, but never with 96* exits, which I will try to tackle for the first time (there are no exits that you can permanently miss, right)? Mega Man X however will be though - yesterday I started a couple of stages and even managed to arrive at some bosses, but got kicked my butt so hard. I only managed to beat the bird boss - we'll see what use his weapon gonna be!

It's funny how many people are saying Mega Man X is hard, because no one would have thought so in 1993. Different times and different contexts I guess. After a decade of hard as hell NES platformers it was actually a more forgiving version of those.

Then Mega Man X6 happens...

My mate accidentally ordered 2 from Argos since the site crashed, so one of them is now mine.

Gonna hook it up this evening! I can't wait.

I seem to remember that game being hard as hell because it was nonsensical and poorly designed.
X6 was the first X game NOT involving Inafune & my god, it shows. It's hard for all the wrong reasons, mainly the awful level designs. I managed to complete X1 through X6 when I was 14 & got the X Collection having only played X1 and a bit of X2, and X6 was probably the most frustrating & least fun out of the bunch. X1 is the fun kind of hard & makes for great replaying.

Meanwhile, I'm slightly bummed that Kirby's Dream Land 3 wasn't included, but it makes sense to go with Super Star. Oh well, maybe I can hack it in, I never got around to finishing it via Wii VC.

Ugh, by the time I get my SNES Classic, it's probably going to arrive around the same time as when I'm playing through Mario & Luigi SS + BM.

I didn't know Inafune wasn't involved, but I guess that's not surprising. As an old school Mega Man fan by the time X6 released, it was instantly seen as a bastard entry. I rather liked X5 so what a downgrade.

I'm listening to KDL3 music right now :)

I don't play the first one much and find it pretty easy. Usually blow through it in less than an hour and a half.

Yeah, Inafune originally planned for X5 to be the last game in the X series, but then Capcom made the sequel without him anyways. People hate on X7 with perfectly good reasons, but X6 angers me more in that it took a formula that worked perfectly well for 5 games and somehow completely screwed it up. X7 was at least trying new things to freshen up the series, even if most of it didn't work.

It's going to be interesting to see what the limits will be in terms of what won't work correctly when hacking games onto it. I'd love to use this as a way to try out rather obscure/rare stuff that I've heard about over the years, but it sounds as though a few games could have some issues (hell, Yoshi's Island isn't 100% accurate as demonstrated in the Fuzzy stage in world 1)

Is there any reason that the music for Yoshi's Island has occasional skips for me? It's the only game (so far) that I've noticed do this. Granted, I've only really put a lot of time into Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter, DKC, and Yoshi's Island so far.

I've noticed it too, in Earthbound and FF3. Pretty annoying.

I read that there is a problem with certain sound hardware like soundbars. Are you using something like that?

I suplexed a train.

You know, one always thinks this "old games were just better than today's" statement ist 100% nostalgia, but never having played FF6 to this extent before and quite disliking it even back then, I am now sure masterpieces just will stay masterpieces even in today's world. What a great game so far.

And so many other games on there I missed or haven't played in a looong time 'cause I'm too lazy to deal with my non-HDMI snes.

Okay, still salty about that all-english-thing. Do I miss something or is there really only enlgish language?
Also, just to get to know my lovely system better: are there some "secrets", like additional controllers i could use, whatever you might think of?

It's just english, it's also written on the packaging.

You can use the Wii Classic controller, with the added bonus of getting back to the main menu via button press. I hate that they didn't implement a button combination for this in the actual controller.

Yeah, that's so weird. Can I plug and play? So I keep my classic controller at the couch, and when I wanna leave my game, I just change the controllers to get to the menu? Because I do love that SNES Controller.

Regarding packaging: Don't know if that was written on the amazon page, and I'm too lazy to check up. It really is somewhat stupid, tho :( What's the use of a German interface then?

Yeah it's stupid. 100 bucks and they are too lazy to put German ROMs on it. What. The. Fuck.

I have no problem with English but my girlfriend is a bit disappointed.

This must really suck for the JRPGs especially. :/

Thinking about it, Nintendo should have allowed the mini snes to accept cartridges that would expand your game collection. It would have fixed the fact that there are a few key titles missing and it would have been even more nostalgia for some people.

Any reason why this wouldn't have been possible?

Well for starters it wouldn't be 'mini' anymore...

Then you'd have to re buy new carts and would suck for people who still have an old snes. Ideally, they should have a store to expand the collection but thank god it can be modded

I could see something more akin to the SNES Classic v2 being a cart that you add to your SNES Classic to bolster it's collection with another 20 games or so on it... but otherwise I don't know.

Something like this would be wonderful:

Don't know, but its possible, if you want that, including 4 other cartridge slots, buy the RetroN5. It's amazing. Even takes original NES, SNES, Genesis controller and it's also in razor sharp 1080p resolution.

There was not a lot they could do about those anyway other than add brand new translations since none of the RPGs on here saw Europe.

Secret of Mana was released in Europe. In fact when I first played and finished it in the 90's it was in german language.

I got lucky. Yesterday I went to my local Toys r us in order to buy something for my nephew's birthday. On my way out I walk through the videogame area and spot some SNES Mini empty boxes. I told to myself "It's already out?" And moved on thinking it's probably sold out. Then I hear one of the clerk: "it's moving fast, I only have two left...". Some minutes later they only had one left...

I'm so happy. I was an early SNES adopter back in the days but, due to the cost of the games, I missed many of them. Most of those made the list on the mini. This little cutie will have me occupied for a while.

Yea I'm in a similar position. Due to being massively into pc gaming at the time I have never played ff6, Earthbound or Legend of Zelda. Not sure which to do first but love a big grand rpg

It makes for a completely different distribution problem. You think the console shortage is bad? "Oh, we didn't think that many people wanted Chrono Trigger so that cart is only available through preorders on TRU - oh, it's gone now, sorry! Here's 100,000 copies of Super Adventure Island."

Neo Geo X did this as well, and it was really annoying. You got that basic console with a few good games and lots of filler, and then you were supposed to buy four collections with another two good games and two filler on each. If they had gone the SNES Classic Mini way and included basically the top 15 games and a few randoms (and proper HDMI support) it would have been much better.

Of course they did, you remember the SNES games that came in the so called Big Box? Europe exclusive?

Secret of Mana and Earthbound were two of them...

So where are we with hacking this bad boy?

I know it’s coming but are there any blogs or reddit threads where people are posting their progress?

Oh nice idling at the menu, it will also show your gameplay of your different savestates. That salty pause rewind save at Super Castlevania IV..
