Can someone recommend me a good site/guide/walk through for Secret of Mana? I'm looking to 100% it, and would love one that has Maps, an item checklist by area, etc.

Starmen.net has me spoiled. I've been using that site along with my Earthbound guide to play and it's been an amazing experience.

I beat SoM 4-5 times as a kid, but it's been 15+ years and I'd love to get everything in one go.

I have not played the game nor know any guides but GameFAQs guides for well known classic RPGs are usually very good. I've used them for FF and DQ games with success.

I’ve never played Secret of Mana, and I’d love to start now.

But I’m thinking of waiting until I can install a fan translation mod, as the original localization seems to be of the FFII era of shoddy Square translations.

“SCREAAAAAM!”

Yeah, somebody had suggested a game-talk only OT, but here we are.

Wouldn't mind having individual game OTs for this thing. Lots of folks getting to rediscover some classics.

If someone does a Game-only OT, I'm outta here like Starfox when WARNING WARNING
All this mod talk should really not clutter up every conversation about this thing.

FFVI: Got some good Rages for Gau (took some hours since I can't fight random enemies to reset the Velt monster packs just yet).

This pretty much breaks the game lol. Beat
Ultros second battle
in one turn. Reminds me of
getting Beta early in FFVII and beating half the early bosses in one hit.

Welp, I gotta be honest: I'm having a really hard time with the Mega Man X bosses. So far I have beaten the Chill Penguin and the Bird - I'm getting through most stages just fine, but most bosses have been an unstoppable wall for me at the end.
Problem for me is how long these fights take, because the arm buster doesn't seem to do any damage really. I can dodge most of the attacks, but there will always be at least one unpredictable attack that I just can't dodge, so in a fight that can take 2-3 minutes I'm guaranteed to get hit a few times and my health bar is so small (can you increase it btw?) that I just don't last throught it.
It seems that I need some more special weapons, but checking what the bosses weaknesses are seems almost like cheating for me. Any suggestions which bosses are particulary easy to take down with the armbuster? So far no luck with the chameleon, the mole and the opctopus.

Also, the only way playing this is to map the dash to one of the shoulder buttons right? Otherwise I have no chance to jump, shoot and to dash simultaneously.

A little update:

- Surprisingly, the ROM format is exactly like on the Wii U virtual console

- Cluster said he probably needs a week to implement everything and he will write a converter that makes normal snes roms to the WII U VC/Snes Classic emulator roms source:gbatemp.net forum

RIP my PS4/3DS backlog when the custom ROM hacking finally drops.

Does anyone know if the SNES Classic controllers work with the Wii/Wii U, since they share the same port shape?
I want to say yes since it seems that the NES controller worked with Wii/U.

Not to mention for a while, EU & Japan got SNES controllers for the Wii, so I'm pretty sure these were made the same way and should work on SNES VC titles on Wii/U. I'd assume you just wouldn't be able to bring up the home menu.

Canceling my One X preorder, gonna be too busy playing snes well into next year.

Quick question about FF6. This seems like the best time to finally get around to playing it, but considering I like to plan my RPGs out as to not get burned/play too many at once, how long would it take to beat + do any extra stuff? I'm hearing about 40ish hours to do the main game and do some extra stuff. Not sure if I'd bother with doing every single thing in the game.

I haven't played Star Fox 2 yet, but I owned 17 of the other 20 games on cart and between rentals, childhood purchases, emulation, adult purchases, and the SNES Classic I've beaten all of them. My rankings of all the titles would be:

Skip:
20. Star Fox.

Try if you want to:
19. Super Ghouls N Ghosts.
18. F-Zero.
17. Street Fighter II Turbo.

Recommended:
16. Contra 3.
15. Kirby's Dream Course.
14. Super Punch-Out!
13. Donkey Kong Country.

Must Play:
12. Mega Man X.
11. Super Mario Kart.
10. Kirby Super Star.
9. Secret of Mana
8. Super Metroid
7. Super Castlevania IV
6. Super Mario RPG
5. Yoshi's Island
4. Earthbound
3. Zelda ALTTP.
2. Super Mario World
1. Final Fantasy 6

Even then I think the only game I'd clearly warn people against is Star Fox, and that's primarily because Star Fox 64 crystalizes what's good about Star Fox and combines it with better controls, visibility, and frame rate.

Like any other FFs, don't bother with extra stuff if you don't have the time. Not only do you not need them, they take a long time even with save states.

Particularly, a 100% Rage list is very time consuming and reaps little rewards (only a handful of Rages are useful, but they do break the game).

With a guide by your side, I'd say ~30 hours. Without, closer to 40.

You might want to check out the Secret of Mana Variable Width Font version by FuSoYa's Niche. That might be the sort of the thing you are looking for.

If it's a first playthrough and you do the main character sidequests but not 100% all the collection stuff, my guess would be you'd be looking at 35-40 hours.

Should buy me enough time to finish up ffvi. I'm having such a blast with this thing so far! What I like the most about these old games is the lack of loading screen, extensive tutorials or endless cutscenes. Makes for very enjoyable pick up and play sessions.

There is a Heart Container in each stage that increases your max health.
There are four Sub-Tanks that can refill your health that you can charge.

Go to Sting Chameleon's stage and when you find the grey cave, climb over it instead.

So let me get this straight, as I haven't been following this thread like a hawk. It seems that the roms on the SNES Classic are different than typical roms that you can get from a dumped cart, and they need to be modified slightly to be installed on the SNES Classic, correct? So with this converter I'll be able to add roms to the SNES Classic?

Playing contra, younger brother walks in and watches me play and he just says "This game is shit, it's just 2D Call of Duty" I couldn't stop laughing.

Gah! I can consistently get to the final boss in Super Ghouls N Ghosts.

However, I never have enough time left on the clock to beat the final boss. And the Fairy Ring is garbage.

Guess that doesn't sound too bad. I'll probably be playing, maybe finishing up the Superstar Saga remake, so I wanted to make sure what I was getting into before moving from one RPG to another. I'd probably just do the sidequests that net me some good items. Doesn't sound like there's a point in doing 100% with no reward or at least one that's worth it.

Plop his ass down & tell him to beat it to show he's utterly wrong. & make sure he doesn't get the Spread Gun because that doesn't exist in CoD.

Now I want to know what he'd think of games like Gunstar Heroes & Metal Slug.

Not for FF6 particularly. Hunting down the optional Espers and getting the Paladin Shield are minor diversions and don't take a significant amount of time.

Of course almost the entirety of the World of Ruin is pretty much optional. You could for example just get the required Edgar and Setzer and just beeline straight to Kefka to beat the game in this case.

Ah! Heart Containers! That should increase my chances! I think I have already detected some, but I had no idea how to reach them, so I left them for now. Seems like I need to get back there first and figure it out. Thanks for the hint for Sting Chameleon's stage - will check it out as soon as possible.

In the mean time I at least managed another boss I haven't tried before: the elephant!

I've had such fun playing this all weekend! Playing through Super Metroid for the first time ever is an amazing experience! Have also played loads of Super Mario World and Star Fox.

So I am not familiar with how the hacked NES classic worked but when this is hacked I will be able to add any ROM and they will show up in the same way as the built in ones? How much storage is on this? Will all the functions like save states also work?

My rankings of all the titles would be:

Off the top of my head, I would go:

Among the best games ever:
1. Earthbound
2. Super Mario World
3. Zelda: LttP
4. Final Fantasy 6

Absolute must-plays:
5. Super Castlevania IV
6. Super Mario RPG
7. Kirby Super Star
8. Super Metroid
9. Yoshi's Island
10. Donkey Kong Country
11. Super Punch-Out!

Spectacular games:
12. F-Zero
13. Super Mario Kart
14. Kirby's Dream Course
15. Star Fox
16. Secret of Mana

Great games:
17. Contra 3
18. Street Fighter II Turbo
19. Mega Man X
20. Super Ghouls N Ghosts

Haven't played enough to judge:
21. StarFox 2

The converter converts it to the right format and after that you can implemented it with the new updated program which also comes in a weeks, yes.

I had never played a Contra game in my life until Friday. The first stage was kicking my butt for a few minutes, lol. Game felt great, though. Enemies kill you in one shot, but you're so powerful that it's fine and feels balanced. I look forward to playing it more.

Star Fox kind of sucks. I can't learn how to aim without an aiming reticle, the low framerate bugs me, and movement feels really sluggish. I played the game through as a kid, so not even being able to beat Corneria now is kind of throwing me for a loop. I'm a bit sad that I'm having trouble getting into it again, since I still love Star Fox 64.

Sounds like something I would say to exaggerate how awful iGens are.

Prolly couldn't get half way through first lvl of Contra 3 :)

Plop his ass down & tell him to beat it to show he's utterly wrong. & make sure he doesn't get the Spread Gun because that doesn't exist in CoD.

Make sure he doesn't use the rewind feature or savestates.

So I got mine on release and have been playing through some of my old favourites, and they seemed a bit off, like, just more difficulty than I remember. I just chalked it up to me being older, slower reactions, spoiled by modern gaming etc.

Then I realised, it's cos it's the first time I've played a lot of these games in 60hz!

I hope this doesn't make EarthBound64 cry any more than he already has, but God damn I'm giddy as hell for this.

Is anyone having issues or heard of people having issues with theirs? Mine doesn't seem to like staying switched on, power just goes off... not sure why. Dodgy cable maybe?

I've tried through the mains on 2 diferent phone charger blocks and off my PC usb.

- keep the buster charged at all times and time your firing
- learn where the bosses land before their attacks go off so even if you get hit by a big attack a few times you will last the match
- always be dashing to the wall and jump on and off, repeatedly

I’ve got a stupid question.

For games that have saving built in, like Super Metroid, and you use the in-game like you would if it were on cart, will it actually save? Or do you always need to use the save state slots from from the SNES start screen?

Anyone else found PS4 sleep mode not to be a reliable power source? I've had a couple of random shut downs.

I will have to try using the PS4 fully on.

There's a setting on the PS4 that dictates for how long the PS4 continue to deliver power through USB after you put it in Sleep Mode. You checked to make sure that it's "Forever"?

Those work like normal saves. However be mindful if you use a save state before a sram save (built-in save) and then quit the game and load the game back up from the save state. It returns the game exactly to the point where the save state was made, even before you used an actual save point in-game saving to the sram data.

Try to avoid mixing and matching sram saves with save states because it can lead to potentially losing your current place in game and undesired backtracking.

There are some posts explaining this elsewhere but here's the rundown:

Saving inside the game is like a normal save - same as the real cartridge. If you shut the SNES off and come back it'll be there.

Save state saves everything about the current state of the game, including in-game saves.

--

Example: You make a game save A, then a save state X. You load save state X and reset the SNES - save A is there.

You make game save B, then shut the SNES off and load save state X. Save B is not there - save state X does not include game save B.

If we're ranking what's in the mini:

Skip:
20 Star Fox

Try if you want to:
19 Super Ghouls N Ghosts
18 F-Zero
17 Street Fighter II Turbo

Recommended:
16 Earthbound
15 Castlevania IV
14 Super Punch-Out!
13 Final Fantasy VI

Must Play:
12 Super Mario Kart
11 Kirby Super Star
10 Secret of Mana
9 Donkey Kong Country
8 Kirby's Dream Course
7 Contra 3
6 Mega Man X
5 Super Mario World
4 Super Mario RPG
3 Yoshi's Island
2 Super Metroid
1 Zelda 3

Was never a huge EB or FFVI fan. I actually prefer FFV for the snes FF's. Shame it never got a western release.

Sounds like something I would say to exaggerate how awful iGens are.
Haha yeah it was pretty funny, especially hearing somebody talk like that earnestly in real life. He pretty much just plays CoD and GTA, nothing bad about that mind you, but it's funny how stereotypical it is. His other line was "The SNES Mini is crap because it doesn't have YouTube", again, sounds like a line I just made up but there you have it.

You can't help but just laugh in these situations, it's just games at the end of the day, nothing to get worked up over. When you grew up and have an appreciation for classic games you want others to enjoy them too, sharing your favourite games from the past is a nice experience, but at the end of the day shoving things down peoples throats is a bit egotistical, truth is, kids these days have a different perspective and while its possible for them to enjoy and appreciate these old classics, I guess that has to happen naturally. I guess at that age, these games aren't cool. He'll eventually reach that age where retro is cool again, maybe, if not that's fine.

In any case it's all good, I passed him the second controller and kicked his ass in street fighter :)

Prolly couldn't get half way through first lvl of Contra 3 :)
I passed him the controller, he died instantly :)

You might want to check out the Secret of Mana Variable Width Font version by FuSoYa's Niche. That might be the sort of the thing you are looking for.

That’s the mod I heard about from the other thread.

I’ll fire up the original for curiosity’s sake, but I’m planning to wait until I can apply the improved translation before commiting to it.
