The attacker's brother just spoke to the Daily Mail:

---

"He was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped or something.

Speaking from his home in Orlando, Florida, Eric said: "We know absolutely nothing, this is just, we are dumbfounded."

"We have absolutely no idea. Our condolences go to the victims and all their families."

Eric said that he and Stephen, 64, lived on different coasts - Stephen's last address was in Mesquite, Nevada - and that they did not speak that often.

He said that his mother was 'in shock' and struggling to cope with the news. He said: "Our family is OK, we're sitting in here in our house hoping that everyone doesn't attack us."

"My mother is 90 years old, lives down the street from me, we're just completely dumbfounded. You can imagine how this is affected her."

What I don't understand is how this makes any difference to other western countries. If I understand it correctly, USA already has some rules around who can own what guns. You can't tell me that anyone in any state can buy whatever gun they want - you guys have rules already.

This is fundamentally the same as UK and Australia. The difference is where the boundaries are in which guns are available and who can own them. Stop any talk of changing the constitution or banning guns wholesale. Instead look at what other western nations do and consider adopting some of the less contentious laws.

For instance - if you own a gun, you have to own a locker to keep it in. A pretty low bar to ownership, but it begins to reduce some of the outliers of gun deaths. Reduces some accidental discharges, reduces some theft. Think small and work your way up.

This is sensible and practical, I like it.

Why are Americans so self defeating?

'Nothing can be done about guns'
'Nothing will ever change'
It won't make any difference'

People are dying and you are all still like this.
A lunatic shot up an elementary school and when the president even tried to imply that new restrictions on guns might help people stopped caring about the kids and started getting mad about their freedom.

We aren't self defeating, we've already lost.

For reference people: My cousin is a videographer and he travels all over North America to fancy hotels to interview doctors and pharma people, in their Hotel suite. He has been to NYC, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Chicago, LA and even Vegas.

I've joined him sometimes to help him with his work, and most of the time he has two of those big ass camera trunks with him, he wheels those up to the hotel suites and no one ever checks them, I mean they even kinda look military ... but yet no Hotel (no matter how prestige) bothers to even ask him what's inside.

This is pretty crazy considering all the laws passed since Bush was in office. We still don't know what the fuck we are doing apparently.

Earlier I read 4 deaths and 20+ injured with the shooter killed.

This is stupefying and horrifying. RIP to victims.

I'm afraid nothing will come of this from the White House. I hope Vegas vanguards legislation.

Presidents have been assassinated.
Little kids murdered in a school.
Congressmen shot just this year.

At some point reality sets in and you understand that nothing will change.

Would it not seem odd though if someone kept going out and coming back with their suitcase?
No. Have you been to big hotels? For one, you can just make a few trips. There are thousands of guests running through the lobby over the course of just a few hours. It would not stand out or be suspicious. Rifles are easier to throw into a standard bag than you think.

It would be a nightmare to try to bag check everyone all the time through hotels. Would bring them down to airport security levels.

The solution isn’t to make everyone go through security theater every time they want or check in. But to target guns themselves.

Those laws didn't cover hotels. It was mostly airports.

As a long time hotel patron from business travel, hotels don't open your luggage. It's just not a thing.

God I want guns gone. My thoughts are to everyone involved and their families as well. I've been sick to my stomach all day because of this.

Here's the issue with getting rid of guns.

1) A whole lot of the Americans who own one would rather shoot anyone coming for them than hand them over.

2) A lot of the police (at least in my area) are the same type of people, meaning there would be trouble even enforcing it. Unless you're black of course, then they'll come get them.
On your second point I've seen a lot of law enforcement officers asking for stricter gun control because part of what makes their work so difficult is the chance that anyone and everyone is armed. I'm sure that opinion differs wildly across the country though depending on the culture in those precincts.

RIP to victims ans hope the injured recover ok.

Sadly, gun sales are probably going to go up after this.

I'm actually kinda interested to see how it goes. A ton of people bought guns after every mass shooting under Obama in fear he'd actually do something. With Trump in office, I can't see the same thing happening.

I mean, what and the fuck is stopping any of the lower level laws from passing? I don't get it really. Nothing ever changes with these lawmakers.

NRA and the industry as a whole have a lot of allies on both sides of the aisle. Easy enough to hide behind the 2nd amendment, and the attention span for this sort of thing is alarmingly short. They just wait it out.

Sales have been in a slump (as well as depressed prices) but this should spike things.

Of course it was. He knew that concert was happening and with the guns he had? He knew what hew as doing.

Aye. But I think it's an important distinction vs the claim some are going to put around where he was just 'crazy' and no-one could predict this, implying this was some spur of the moment act by someone who just lost it.

They are hoping for gambling debts or mental health issues at this point.

They'll probably call him a liberal who was radicalised by the "extremist rhetoric against Trump and the GOP". It's what these fucks did after the assault on that Congressional baseball game.

I've seen empathy form many people during and after all this. People offering their cars for victims transports, people helping each other. It's not all bad. :(

:)

I know. It's just those people never have power. It's why we need to find Cincinnattuses.

What will be the NRA's excuse?

If everyone had guns this wouldn't have happened.

Usual fucking bullshit as they stoke more fear.

I'm so tired at this point. I grew up around guns and get the idea on how people want them, used to hunt and target shoot even, but i went from "more regulation and close loopholes" to "guns are pointless and the toys should be taken away" years ago and it's just exhausting now.

None of these things are crazy in America.

Actually Switzerland is as relaxed as US, perhaps even more so.

Army reserve (most men, basically) keep weapons (including real scary automatic) at home (although, starting from 2007 ammunition is stored somewhere else), buying semi automatic and assault rifles is allowed from age of 18.

Mass shootings do happen, although not as frequently

They’re going to do it to make sure they can protect themselves even further. And with this administration, more people that aren’t republicans are probably thinking of arming themselves now too.

If the crowd had easy access to a rocket launcher, they could have taken him out.

The solution will be allow semi auto rifles still - but add cameras everywhere, add scanners, add government breaking encryption, log everything and send it to an AI to predict people "snapping", monitor all financial transactions. by insisting on the right to own weapons of mass destruction you hand the government an excuse for increasing state surveillance. Gain a dangerous hobby lose an entire free society.

Holy shit:

Some of those videos are chilling to watch. Hearing the gunfire and people not knowing where it's coming from or where to run, terrible situation.

This is disgusting. I'm lost for words. America is an absolute joke of a country, fuck everyone who defends their 'right to a firearm'

We obviously want things to change, but our political system is so thoroughly fucked that we have no real power to make it happen. Many of us have lived through decades of mass shootings with no actual change or improvement on gun control, so why should we start believing something will happen now? Just a few years ago 20 CHILDREN were killed in their school and I don’t think one single new piece of gun legislation got passed as a result. Except now our kids have to go through “active shooter” drills at school.

It will be now. Not taking action against mentally disturbed people owning guns but demanding airport style scanners for public venues. In fact I'm almost certain some cretinous 2nd Amendment types will push for this.

I'm in the midwest, in my town most are the same people with multiple guns who would probably shoot at anyone coming to take them.

Just woke up to this.

My family and I were literally near Mandalay Bay on vacation, just last week.

Needless to say, this is just so chilling. My heart goes out to those poor people.

50 dead...goddamnit...

And it's gonna keep going on this never-ending cycle, isn't it? It feels like during my currently early lifespan of following actively news, there is soon gonna be a point where I just go numb to reading about mass shootings in the US.

And I am honestly bothered now that I see the two words "thoughts" and "prayers", because that's all there is isn't it?
A mass shooting in the US.
"Thoughts and prayers."
A mass shooting in the US.
"Thoughts and prayers."
A mass shooting in the US.
"Thoughts and prayers."

There are no additional steps being taken. It just goes round and round on these two things. People die due to senseless gun violence, survivors have the "thoughts and prayers" of the rest of the nation, nothing follows, repeat. I am honestly starting to hate those two words.

Those people are also largely the base of the party that controls every branch of the Federal government

fucking infuriating. First thing i saw this morning was Shaun King talking about a terrorist attack, and i'm like wtf is he talking about.

Fucking shoot yourself in the head, do the rest of us a favor if you want to do this shit.

I seriously doubt this will happen. Airport-style scanners in hotels are not very attractive or welcoming.

Vegas may do something with luggage checks. That's it.
