Nobody. I'm just asking if that's what you meant.

What's gun control?
Putting a far greater limit on how many guns, what kind of guns, and ammo one person can have. Also making the process of getting a gun much more thorough and prudent.

I think things like buying guns at gun shows should be illegal, as well as from pawn shops.

At this point, you just need to hope that you're not the victim of a mass shooting. That's all we can fucking get. Wrong place, wrong time.

Yup, that’s basically how I live my life. Tend to go to less movies, concerts, etc. as a result but otherwise I know there is basically no chance in this country of any kind of gun control and if 20 children being murdered by a mass shooting in Newtown wasn’t enough to have ANY change, then nothing is going to to do it outside of lopsided Democratic control of President + Congress.

At least I live in NY where we have some gun control w/ teeth, I don’t know how people in open carry states do it. I actively avoid open carry states for any sort of travel for that specific reason.

They said he had 200 loaded magazines KTNV did

Could you really do that damage, at that height, with an AR? It sounded like one of those belt-fed machine guns they used from a chopper in Vietnam (M60?), judging by the videos. Same kind of firing rate, and I'm guessing a similar height to fire from?

I'm just guessing here, but I imagine others at that hotel would know that shots were coming from it and they could triangulate the area of suspicion via witness statements. If anyone knows the actual answer to this, let me know, I'm super interested.

All you need is one person in a hotel room near him to figure it out. A rifle going off in a hotel room is going to be deafening.

any chance they will study the shooter's brain?

there was probably something really wrong structurally.. maybe a tumor pressing on his amygdala or something (like what might have explained the Charles Whitman case). there's NO WAY a human being who has a normal brain could do this, i refuse to believe it.

i tell this to myself everytime someone commits mass murder, i dunno if its healthy... i just want to understand :(

They'll claim the attack when someone tips over a trashcan.

Do not trust ISIS, wait until official sources have commented the situation (so far, nothing hints at any militant group involvement).

Agreed.

However, they dont claim everything. At this point, it does not matter. We will get answers soon enough

An entire class of kids got blown away and nothing happened.

Maybe, just maybe a few of these things will tip the scales this time:

1) Event was capured in realtime with many phone cams --- you can hear the automatic gunfire plain as day, and it no rational person could justify that rate of fire being available for anyone outside of a warzone

2) The shooter is just an average Joe, no criminal history, not even any mental issues, not a vet (from what the family says), no military training, nothing. The only shred is an unconfirmed link to ISIS which may (likely) be BS.

Sandy Hook shooter had a crazed look in his eye and was clearly mentally unstable. This blows the doors off of the "mentally challenged people shouldn't have guns" part of the discussion. Maybe, just maybe the populace at large will come together and agree that if an average Joe with no criminal history can just snap and do something like this with these sort of warzone-only-applicable weapons, then there needs to be some serious reforms and restrictions on weapons available on the market in this country and severe penalties for modifying said weapons in ways like this shooter likely did....

The interview with the brother was strange, guy seems like a regular joe, typical American... Couldn't be any more dull... What the fuck, I wish they pushed him on questions of this guy's political and social views! Surely something triggered him...

I would've interrogated the brother a little more within "reason"...

"Massive Gambling debt?"

"Trouble with his girlfriend? relationship, financial problems with her? Any idea why she isn't in the country? and how long has she been gone? They are a couple right, was there lots of arguing? A bumpy relationship?"

"Did he like his country?"

"Watched the news a lot?"

"Did he do any volunteer work, was he socially involved in the community?"

Serious question though, does terrorism require a motive or an ideology or an agenda to push. Does a random act of violence count as terrorism?

I always thought terrorism had to be politically motivated (like the IRA attacking British targets in Northern Ireland, or Islamists trying to destabilize/influence Western nations).

Something like Columbine isn't a terrorist attack.

Do you think it will start becoming a thing where hotels will start checking bags in las vegas?
The one report I read said they found 10 rifles in the hotel room. How in the hell does a guy bring 10 high powered rifles into a hotel room along with the 200 fully loaded magazines? Nobody noticed? Nobody cared? Is it is god-given American right to do so?

Good grief America. Gun control.

The problem here is I don't see how something this extreme is some random act of violence. You don't just wake up one day and do this.

There may be a motive and anything of this scale had some degree of premeditation but until there is proof that he had a political motive or was affiliated with some entity like Isis, calling him a terrorist is inaccurate. Maybe he's just a crazy person who snapped one day. I'm not saying he isn't a terrorist but we don't know if he is yet. It lessens the impact and efficacy of a title when misapplied.

You and I both know if this guy was any other ethnicity than white the president and the media would be calling him a terrorist.

Im not saying racism isn't at play, but responsible news sources and places of elevated discussion like gaf should hold ourselves to a high standard of accuracy in our discussion. It's what makes this forum a great place.

I think they said some girl was with him prior to the shooting. They're probably looking for her.

His girlfriend's ID was in his room, but the police have already interviewed and released her. She lived with him for years in his home in Mesquite.

It is one of the oddest attacks in US history, a quiet, retired, elderly white guy who gambled, listened to country music, and owned small planes killing 50+ people with guns no one in his family knew he owned. He apparently went to a few concerts at Mandalay Bay and stayed regularly there - Mesquite is about 90 mins away from Las Vegas.

There was clearly a lot of pre-meditation involved, checking into the hotel room 4 days ago, smuggling in 10 rifles into the room (guns are not allowed on any hotel property on the strip), setting up nearly 1100 feet away from the concert on the balcony with mags all around him, killing himself at the end.

Already seeing the "guns don't kill people" line being trotted out on my FB, fuck me.
I already blocked most of those people during Sandy Hook. They'll be posting plenty of news stories about the one time a single mother shot an armed person during a home invasion, but I won't be seeing any of it.

I'm sure in their minds if the concert goers were all armed and fired back at the hotel everything would have been different.

Horrific. Everyone is talking about it at work. Trump's response was better than I expected. Something needs to be done. No one should have to worry about getting shot (ever) at a damn concert.

Why are these guns legal? Why can't we ban those? Make clip sizes smaller? Average citizen's do not need these types of guns for sport, hunting, whatever.

Why are half of your questions about the girlfriend?

Gross.

Conspiracy theories revel in the absence of proof, as that is part of the conspiracy.

As it is with ISIS.

Yes but in that case, we all know that if they found out that he was a Muslim it would be all over the news. So if they find out that he didn't convert, it would cast a pretty bad light on Isis for possible sympathizers. It's partly because of this kind of stuff that AQ loose popularity among the "jihadi" crowd

It would matter for their followers if they start claiming false attacks. Before, it was impossible to check some of the attacks. But in this case, we will know pretty soon.
It doesn't matter if most people know they're lying. If a single person is more afraid because of this claim then it served its purpose.

Yes? I have a one of these.

Why the fuck are they legal to own?

I fucking hate the "this isn't the time" crowd in regards to gun control discussions. This happens so goddamn often that there's never going to be a 'right time' to discuss it.

During most tragedies it's OK to talk about the why, and to try and find solutions to prevent it from happening again. I don't know why this is so gauche when it comes to gun violence.

Why on Earth would a civilian ever need this? This is insane.

Holy fucking shit... cbc radio just reported 400+ wounded... is that accurate?

One fucking guy... if this doesnt trigger the biggest reform of gun control in the US... NOTHING WILL
A guy shot up a classroom of little children, we already knew nothing would bring change.

He is a terrorist. There is no other definition. It is very, very accurate to call the shooter a terrorist. Don't give an inch.

Saw a video of someone with like a trigger that looks like a Gatling gun lever. Maybe he had barrel drum magazines

Family members of mass murderers are always the last to see the truth. It's like in serial killer cases where they say "well they always seemed nice."

If this is true, then I really don't know what to say. How?

It’s a hotel. They don’t check your bags. He walks in with a hard golf bag case and a large suitcase and no one would think twice.

You don't know anything about this guy's motives yet. I'll never understand GAF's obsession with labelling events like this.

Probably a psychotic break + massive easy access to deadly weapons. Honestly I'm surprised something of this level hasn't happened more frequently. Normally its young white dudes with shitty planning. You can see what happens when an old dude sets his mind to killing everyone :/

I don't think I'll ever travel to the USA again. Your society is sick and dangerous

Because the gov'ment is comin for muh guns!

Human lives? What? I only care about me and my arsenal of weapons.

Put them in luggage. How hard is that?

It’s not the brothers fault. No reason to interrogate him on TV. The police should ask those questions, but not the media.

No, it's not. I understand emotions are running high but every single shooting is not a terrorist attack, even if the body count is high.

There requires to be a political, religious or ideological motive behind a singular/group attack for it to be classed as a terrorist attack (domestic or international). This is the way it has been since forever with countries and Governments. Hence why there is an abundance of mass shootings and massacres in America's history NOT called terrorist attacks.

The UK MI5 as I posted on the previous page gives a decent quick rundown https://www.mi5.gov.uk/terrorism

I'll never understand why we would argue about semantics when over 50 people are dead...

Because people get emotionally hurt when they do not see something called what they want it to be called which is only adding further undue stress and anxiety. If you can help others understand why something isn't called what they want it to be, in a kind/polite way, that's simply educating.
