Why are half of your questions about the girlfriend?

Gross.

Because signs point to "triggered state" Something set this guy off, he doesn't have history of mental health issues, or any radical political, religious views, so what's left? family/relationship, financial abandonment. isolation/loss/betrayal...

There must be some sort of answer to this chaos!

The one report I read said they found 10 rifles in the hotel room. How in the hell does a guy bring 10 high powered rifles into a hotel room along with the 200 fully loaded magazines? Nobody noticed? Nobody cared? Is it is god-given American right to do so?

Good grief America. Gun control.
Hockey bags straight from the carage to elevator and to room. Impossible to notice if not checked by security.

If he really had 200 magazines of ammo, that's insane... (6000 rounds of ammo) That couldn't have been light at all and must have taken a long time to load as well if he was just one person that did this. The fact he got a room on the side of the hotel facing the venue is crazy as well. How did he get it all in there? 10 rifles and 6000 rounds of ammo in 200 magazines..

Of course not. Any threat to taking any kind of weapons away means trampling on the 2nd amendment, regardless of how logical the reasoning. Do people really need semi-automatic rifles? No. Should there be harsher background checks? Yes. Should we keep guns out of the hands of felons convicted of violent crimes and those with mental disabilities? Yes.

...But the 2nd amendment blah blah blah blah freedom patriotism. It's the same cycle all over again. Mass shootings like this will continue until actual gun legislation is enacted. Until, continue to watch the unfolding massacre, because it's not going to stop.

I totally understand this, but then that also breeds the purchase / ramped manufacturing of illegal guns without any way to track people and will be more accessible than now.

I totally understand the need for gun control, but we also need to look at the fact that most gang violence is done with untraceable guns / guns not in the system.

Also, look at Illinois, for example. Very strict laws and has the most homicides by guns. Death toll is currently at 519 for this year alone.

Maybe, just maybe a few of these things will tip the scales this time:

1) Event was capured in realtime with many phone cams --- you can hear the automatic gunfire plain as day, and it no rational person could justify that rate of fire being available for anyone outside of a warzone

2) The shooter is just an average Joe, no criminal history, not even any mental issues, not a vet (from what the family says), no military training, nothing. The only shred is an unconfirmed link to ISIS which may (likely) be BS.

Sandy Hook shooter had a crazed look in his eye and was clearly mentally unstable. This blows the doors off of the "mentally challenged people shouldn't have guns" part of the discussion. Maybe, just maybe the populace at large will come together and agree that if an average Joe with no criminal history can just snap and do something like this with these sort of warzone-only-applicable weapons, then there needs to be some serious reforms and restrictions on weapons available on the market in this country and severe penalties for modifying said weapons in ways like this shooter likely did....

This is a country that just had a group of people have a thermonuclear meltdown over people kneeling during a song.

As much as I hate to say it, nothing's going to happen and nothing's going to change.

I'm seriously beginning to hate this country more and more every day.

You don't know anything about this guy's motives yet. I'll never understand GAF's obsession with labelling events like this.

It's likely due to the fact that racists in this country have morphed the term "terrorist" to mean "not a white person." So even in cases when a non-white shooter was not linked to any kind of terrorist organization, they get called a terrorist, but any white person is just a "lone wolf" or "troubled individual."

Yep I'm a coward for knowing Trump and Republicans will do nothing. Ya got me.

I repeat it so people realize how fucked it is, maybe it can inspire more people to vote.

Let me put it this way.

Is it getting worse under the Republicans?
Obviously.

Is it a reason to be a "nothing will ever happen" defeatist?
No.

Fight, demand, let your voice be heard. The only voice people love to get heard is "Sandy Hook happened".

It is absurd how the right gets stronger and stronger trough, unreasonable, wrong and stupid demands (remember lock her up?), while the left confuses being cynical with being smart.

So yeah, I agree. Go voting.

I just woke up to this....holy fucking shit....this is just sickening, heart aching.....I'm just completely at a lost for words......

all I can do is offer up my prayers for all those affected by this...I can't believe this.....

He is a terrorist. There is no other definition. It is very, very accurate to call the shooter a terrorist. Don't give an inch.

There's a reason why we have different terms such as mass murderer, serial killer, terrorist etc. Terrorist inflicts terror on populace as a political/social-motivated act. Va Tech, Sandy Hook, Columbine etc. were not terrorists, they were mass-murderers.

What in the fuck does that have to do with this today?

Good grief America. Gun control.

I've been reading reports he was in the hotel room since Sept 28th. He probably brought one in at a time. This was a very calculated attack.

Some chucklefuck with mic opportunistically hoping to get the scoop immediately after a tragedy isn't going to be the one to get you the answers.

I think they said some girl was with him prior to the shooting. They're probably looking for her.

Is that the same woman that was screaming that everyone there was going to die (and subsequently removed from the area by security) about 45 minutes before the shooting took place?

He was there for multiple days. Easy to take several trips

I don’t know why everyone feels the need to throw mental illness under the bus when this happens.

A lot of people are just massive assholes.

He drove there correct? And he had been there since the 28th? Just take them out of the car one a day. I don’t know what Vegas has in terms of having to allow cleaners into a room every 24 hours though.

Just woke up to the news.. saw some video. My thoughts are prayers are with everyone. My heart sank reading the news and watching what happened.

CNN had somebody on saying "you couldn't have asked for any more from a president", in regards to Trump's speech.

Am.. I missing something? This is NOTHING like how Obama would address people after a tragedy. His addresses are devoid of emotion or empathy. It wasn't horrible, no, but it was hardly passable. Man I can't stand CNN sometimes.
You need to stop watching that trash pile of a network; plenty of other more competent resources for news out there.

Trumps address was at least in the right place. I fucking hate the guy but arguing over this isn't worth my time. He leaned way to much on god and prayer but whatever. at least he didn't make a fool of himself.

how sad that's the bar he has to work with.

I don't understand what it will take for us to have a real conversation about gun legislation.

He was at the hotel since September 28th. He likely brought them in over the course of a few days, wouldn’t arise suspicion that way.

Yeah I get the feeling some people in here haven't stayed in hotels before. You can come and go all day long if you like, and put a do not disturb sign up and your room won't be touched.

Putting a far greater limit on how many guns, what kind of guns, and ammo one person can have. Also making the process of getting a gun much more thorough and prudent.

I think things like buying guns at gun shows should be illegal, as well as from pawn shops.

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u....016/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-4.xls

Total 2016: 11,004

Handguns: 7,105

Rifles: 374

Shotguns: 262

Other: 186

Not Stated: 3,077

So if we subtract not stated from total because we have no data on them and get percentages

Handguns: 90%

Rifles: 5%

Shotguns: 3%

Other: 2%

So what guns should we be keeping people from buying? Its obviously not rifles or shotguns. Its pistols. Banning pistols would cut gun crime by a lot.... right?

You have to look at the statics before you start calling for bans on "certain weapons". It makes your point look stupid when your facts are not straight.

Serious question though, does terrorism require a motive or an ideology or an agenda to push. Does a random act of violence count as terrorism?

Yes, terrorism requires a political objective. The idea of terrorism is to inflict shocking violence to terrorize people on behalf of a particular cause, whether that be religious, nationalist, separatist, revolutionary, whatever. Without that motive, it's "just" violence.

I don’t know why everyone feels the need to throw mental illness under the bus when this happens.

People need/want to believe “regular” people aren’t rationally capable of this.

It's not the brothers fault. No reason to interrogate him on TV. The police should ask those questions, but not the media.

I understand, I am sure police asked even more personal and tough questions than that, but I am saying the media should've pried a bit more, even though I respect their restraint to let the guy just talk. Maybe it's way too early to approach him now, and should wait a few days.

He is clearly in shock and confused, and I do feel a bit sorry for the guy, granted he is being genuinely honest and not holding back crucial info that he knew that could've prevented this tragedy.

Was a pistol used in this attack? I'm confused.

Ive stayed at the Mandalay Bay few years ago. Like many hotels there is not security check. He probably checked in during the morning when less people are around (Vegas is absolutely dead in mornings). It’s stupid easy to bring in guns to any hotel if concealed in a bag or Golf bag.

Yeah I get the feeling some people in here haven't stayed in hotels before. You can come and go all day long if you like, and put a do not disturb sign up and your room won't be touched.

Some places require you to check in at the front desk to ensure you haven’t died/suicided in the suite if the do not disturb sign has been out.

His brother said their father was a bank robber who at the time was on FBI's most wanted list. There are some hits for his name, in case someone is interested: Patrick Benjamin Paddock, alias Benjamin Hoskins Paddock. Seems to be the same person at least.

I fucking hate the "this isn't the time" crowd in regards to gun control discussions. This happens so goddamn often that there's never going to be a 'right time' to discuss it.

During most tragedies it's OK to talk about the why, and to try and find solutions to prevent it from happening again. I don't know why this is so gauche when it comes to gun violence.

Why on Earth would a civilian ever need this? This is insane.

Talk about gun control now. Talk about it tomorrow. Talk about it until something gets done.

The small issue I have is gun control might help reduce the number of casualties in events such as this, but these events will still take place. So if you frame it as something that can prevent Mandalay Bay or The Pulse or Sandy Hook, people can look to Europe and see mass killings and say "nope." People who intend to kill many, many people will move to using homemade bombs.

Focus on the everyday consequences of gun violence. The tens of thousands who die each year, be it by someone else's hand or their own. That's where gains will be made if we had ample gun control. We may never prevent a Sandy Hook, but we might be able to prevent thousands upon thousands of small disputes from becoming deadly.

Sorry but this gets trotted out in every one of these discussions and it has to be pointed out forcefully that it is utter bullshit.

The guns used in Illinois are purchased legally across state lines. (cf. EDIT: 2nd and more recent source, though it looks to be working off the same FBI data.)

States with tight gun control still having high firearm casualty rates is not a sound argument for the inefficacy of gun control. it's a sound argument for the necessity for gun control laws across the nation that actually work in concert.

All of them? This isn't a difficult concept.

Ten guns and that much ammo could easily fit into a hockey bag, and I've been on a million trips/tournaments and never once has anyone ever asked to check what's inside.

It wouldn't be hard at all to bring a big bag full of weapons up to a hotel room in Vegas.

Why are these guns legal? Why can't we ban those? Make clip sizes smaller? Average citizen's do not need these types of guns for sport, hunting, whatever.

  • Why are these guns legal? - Genuinely don't know. IMHO a person can only make a case for a pistol and a hunting rifle, but for whatever reason its an all or nothing situation in the US.
  • Why can't we ban those? - Yes, but people will freak the fuck out. I'd much rather take the approach that we ban further sale, but the 'they are coming for our guns' crowd will squash that.
  • Make clip sizes smaller? - Several states restricted magazine size, but this is a state by state regulation.
  • Average citizen's do not need these types of guns for sport, hunting, whatever. - Again I agree with you, but it seems to be all or nothing in the US. Nobody wants to sit down and have a rational conversation about this. As a result almost no progress has been made.

Your soon to be Senator from Alabama

MSNBC cited Newsweek in stating that Nevada gun laws do not require gun owners to be licensed, does not require them to register their guns, and that they can have as many as they want...yet of course, absolutely nothing is going to be done about this, now is there?

This is a good point

It's really deflating to know this won't move the needle at all on gun control. All these people senselessly murdered or gravely injured and nobody is going to care enough to do shit. But then again the issue of gun control was over in America once a dozen or so children were slaughtered at Sandy Hook and nobody did a thing.

Went to bed with 20+ dead. 50+?

Can’t fully fathom what I am looking at now that I woke up. Jesus Christ.

What a fucking living nightmare. RIP to all the dead. Can you just imagine if they were a loved one.
