I didn't say that... ?

There just has to be a way better than just saying, "No guns for you!" and calling it a day.
That's a very simplistic view of people who want gun control. Here's what I said earlier
Putting a far greater limit on how many guns, what kind of guns, and ammo one person can have. Also making the process of getting a gun much more thorough and prudent.

I think things like buying guns at gun shows should be illegal, as well as from pawn shops.

I don't think I'm going to forget this night for aslong as I live. To see it climb from 2 dead and 27 injured to 58 dead to 500+ injured is a surreal feeling.

While America does have a gun problem, silencers aren't anything to get upset about.

1. Silencers are not silent. In fact they are not even called silencers. They are called suppressors because silencer is a misnomer based on Hollywood and videogames. Even if you use subsonic ammo with a suppressor it's still not silent.

2. Supressors are already stupid easy for anyone to get and the fbi has found no evidence in them being used for crime. A suppressor makes a gun almost impossible to conceal and is generally not going to be used in a heart of the moment homicide which most homicides are in the US.

If you want to fight the gun lobby you have to pick battles you can win. They have statistics on their side for supressors so ignore it and go after handguns which are responsible for 95% of gun deaths.

I'm aware of the misnomer but you can't deny a suprressors function which is to dampen gunshots and muzzle flashes. I imagine loud gunshots ringing out saved a lot of lives during this thing especially as he attacked from 32 stories up. Suppressors certainly wouldn't help avoidance or the law enforcement trying to locate him.

This was clearly a fairly coordinated attack and not just spur of the moment.

Why take the risk? Why make total lethality even easier?

Jeez, so this really was a fully automatic weapon? How do you even get one of these?

I can’t even imagine the motive, I only hope we eventually find out.

The fact that close to 500 people were injured, it’s hard to process.

The conclusion to draw from this related to guns is blindingly obvious, but i fear the NRA will spin this as “The gun he used was already banned. This is just proof gun control doesn’t work”

Yup. It's simple.

Handguns for home, rifles for hunting. No reason to own any other guns.

You do realize the gun most likely used in this attack, an AR-15, is a rifle, right? It stands for ArmaLite rifle. By default it can only shoot one bullet a pull (of the trigger) but with some effort and time it can be converted to an automatic style weapon.

Just like many pistols can be converted to automatic (hold trigger, keeps firing) and converted to high (100+ round) magazines.

I still can't imagine what the motive was. The guy was obviously a gun lover so if I had to guess, I would say he was right leaning. But, at the same time, he opened fire on a country concert? It really does sound like mental illness in this case.

In this information vacuum the only "motive" I can imagine is he wanted to end it all, so he went to Vegas for a weekend, blew all his money, tried to kill as many people as he could by shooting at an easy and crowded target, and then killed himself.

His brother saying "this isn't him" obviously doesn't know him if they barely talk.

After waking up and seeing the recent info...

Fucking hell.

The deadliest shooting in America's history.

4 of the 5 worst shootings happened in the space of a decade.

Fuck it all.

As far as I know from reading stuff about guns here in GAF it is very easy to modify or "unlock" rifles into automatic, like a Google search away. I'm not from the USA, so this is how I get to know about guns, so is this true?

EDIT:

Malcolm Nance on MSNBC did mention that it could have been a semi-automatic rifle that was illegally modified.

I see this answer my question.

Somehow, my mother will still find a way to defend assault rifle ownership after this, even though our aunt lives in Vegas, and it could have very well been her in the crowd.

Your soon to be Senator from Alabama

While Alabama has the third highest murder rate in the country.

I'll ask this again. From 32 floors up, could you do this devastation with an AR? Genuine question as I am completely ignorant when it comes to guns. Wouldn't you do more damage with a machine gun?

These were automatics, they were effectively machine guns.

And yes, most rifle rounds that are common than be deadly up to 600 meters.

Right, and the granularity? One handgun and one rifle per home?

Any more stringent and you're taking the ability to hunt as a necessity and/or a sport from people.

Also, the crappy thing is, it doesn't take into effect the numerous amount of weapons one has already, unfortunately. My uncle has over a dozen guns, for example. It's more of a collection thing, but still.

Which is insane to me. Apparently he was 32 floors up and far away. How can he hit with precision like that.

When you have an automatic weapon and a massive crowd of targets, precision goes out the window. Dude was just firing a massive amount of lead at a huge crowd. Lots of people are going to get hit.

As long as theres 300 million guns in the US it doesnt matter what you do legally. He could have borrowed one from the guy down the street if he needed to. America is just straight fucked unless we can somehow cut that number waaaaaaay down

While that's true, that should not be an excuse to not implement gun control. First and foremost we have to stem the flow of guns into the hands of consumers and then we can work on reducing the number of guns in the hands of people that shouldn't have them. There is no quick fix but the sooner we do something the better.

Sort of, depends on the gun really. Some can be easily modified, some require complex work or special parts.

The guy was across the street from the venue, unfortunately with the kind of weapon he had and how packed in the people were, he didn't really need to be accurate

Over 500 people are injured... Many are likely not gonna make it. For fuck's sake... People better not forget this happened.
