Mass shooting at the Mandalay Bay Las Vegas; 58 dead, 500+ injured.

Wow --- had no idea that the Nice attack had that many injured ---- it's getting much too easy for sick & twisted individuals to mass murder tens & injure hundreds at a time........
I believe, it was the first time, where terrorist used a car to attack people in the west. So the police and the public wasn't prepared for it. It would be much harder to be as "effective" now.

Vegas native here.

Coworker called out today. Her friend got shot. My girlfriend's friend was at the concert. She was safe but her two friends were shot; one in the back, one in the foot.

I work on the Las Vegas strip, not last night tho. There is HEAVY police presence right now, all hotels have heavy security detail and are checking every vehicle entering their premises. Cops are stationed on every major street corner. Las Vegas blvd is locked down for about 2 miles (from Tropicana to Sunset). Pulling into work, I waited at a stoplight while 4 more police squad cars drove through with sirens on. Still hearing sirens from time to time.

Walking into work (near a hotel), I'm seeing a TON of people checking out and who can blame them. At least way more than I normally see on Monday morning.

This is surreal.

Lots of my Facebook friends are out donating blood today and it's good, my city is in need right now. There are pictures circulating on my Facebook feed; the hospitals look like a warzone.

Edit: nevermind, he's banned. Got distracted at work. This thread is moving fast.

Get the fuck outta here with this trash. Have some decency.

Come on, man. You're not even trying

Why do you label your opposition "the left"? What is leftist about gun regulation?

Not disagreeing with you guys but y'all have to understand this is the basis, almost word for word, people use in real life. I mean, almost word for word.

I hear it all the time here in SC. I think instead of hot takes thrown at that post, we could write something constructive like the below...

Oh I'm sorry that our position this morning isn't nuanced enough for you.

Wait, no I'm fucking not. This 'logic' you're putting forwards is basically saying we shouldn't have bothered making murder illegal, since it'll still happen.

If it was harder to buy guns or bullets this would happen less.

That's a fucking fact. CF every country where it's harder to buy guns and bullets, where the attacks tend to use much less lethal weapons, and where the death tolls tend to be much much lower.

There's a reason no one is driving trucks into crowds of people in the US, and it's because it's really fucking easy to get guns.

Very true. And well written.

For people who make that argument, it's an "all of nothing" kind of mentality. They also claim that gun control only hurts the honest gun owners. It does nothing for people who buy them illegally.

The question you have to ask them is "where are the illegal guns coming from?" Answer: from states that have lax gun laws. Example: Indiana bought guns travelling to Chi town.

Indiana's laws are so lax, you can legally saw off your shotgun. (You know, for those huge grizzly bear home invasions where you need a wide spread) They of course have the gun show loophole, so anyone can go to Indiana, buy assault rifles from a gun show (unchecked) and drive an hour into Chi town and sell them.

It happens in SC as well. A hand gun is relatively cheap here. I could technically buy 5 of them for a total of 2.5k and sell them in NYC for around 15k. It's a lucrative business for criminals and we need to attack it from that end as well. Not just gun control.

But we can't get there because the arguments stops before it begins. Because of the defeatist mentality citizens have and the lobby money paid to Republicans by the NRA and other gun manufacture interest groups.

Rest in peace.

Some Americans are more upset about people being anti-gun than they are about the victims who died.

My uncle showed more fury about Hillary Clinton tweeting about standing up to the NRA than he did about this.
They just make it more and more obvious that they value their previous little bang bang toys than saving future human lives.

Its status quo, through and through. People will post meaningless "thoughts and prayers" and move on. Our culture is the worst.

I can see Vegas disallowing firearms into the hotels and casinos. I can see Nevada cracking down in a state level in terms of ownership. This is going to hurt the economy of Vegas (and already has) and since Vegas runs on outside money they have the power and incentive to do something to project a safe environment to their clients.

So... Basic ass dude, with no history background or military training, priors or criminal record, family and friends refer to him as friendly and kind, and say he owned no weapons, and "not a gun person" etc etc.

WHY IN THE FUCK DID HE DO THIS.

It's a good question. I simply can't comprehend how someone can do this, it just doesn't register to me.

What a terrible tragedy.

America needs more gun control, how much death needs to be dealt like this before people are convinced? :(

We are through the looking glass when it comes to politics nowadays in the U.S. There used to be a day or two before the politics of these things came into play. Now, its immediate.

I've noticed that at least in Dallas, they now set up barricades so cars don't have access to the space where large gatherings are.

But this 'let's ban cars too' argument is still stupid. Cars, kitchen knives, etc -- these are utilitarian items that have uses that make them worth having, despite the dangers. Guns are just killing machines -- society operates just fine without 'shooting stuff' being a popular hobby, just look at most other modern countries.

More than 30,000 die each year and more than 70,000 others are injured by gun violence in the United States. That's more than 80 dead and more than 190 injured every single day of the year, and 99.5% of those days do not have a Mandalay Bay type of event.

Every single day is a day worth talking about gun control because no day is absent of massive amounts of gun violence.

Yep, let's just keep on doing what we're doing, never dealing with the problem because that would "make it political." So nothing will ever change. Funny how it's the side of the debate that wants to keep the status quo that is always so concerned and offended at the timing of these discussions.

I won’t gloat if nothing happens. I would be sad.

What it's coming down to is that, IMO, if this kind of random shooting happen a few more times in Vegas and it actually impact the bottom line of Vegas business. Then maybe, just maybe Vegas will get tougher gun laws. And I don't see anything happen in other gun states.

I don't even understand why firearms are allowed inside hotels anyhow

But guys, it won't matter! If we ban guns the thugs will still find a way to get them and then we won't have anything to defend ourselves!

Yes. I've actually heard this.

Defined as a shooting where 4 or more people are killed by the US. That seems pretty likely to happen once a day here.

A "mass shooting" is defined as an event where for 4 or more individuals are injured or killed by a firearm. They do NOT necessarily all have to be fatalities.

I believe, it was the first time, where terrorist used a car to attack people. So the police and the public wasn't prepared for it. It would be much harder to be as "effective" now.
One could argue that an attack like this will be far less effective in the future as concert venues and nearby hotels/buildings with clear line of sight increase and improve security measures.

About the ISIS claim:

I think it's a pretty big sign of their desperation that they are claiming more and more unlikely attacks.

250+ this year not good enough? You need one literally every day?

Ya that's what I said, I need a mass shooting everyday. Bro.

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/03/...rage-every-day-records-show.html?mcubz=0&_r=0

This is different than an indiscriminate killing which happen less than 10 times a year

So not everyday. Still crazy to think there's that many people getting shot.

Seems likely <> Is fact.

Guns are not allowed on any hotel in Las Vegas, there are clearly signs that say firearms are not allowed on property. It should not be a real shock that someone who wants to murder a ton of people doesn't follow the laws. With 10k+ people going in and out of most hotels each day its hard to actively police everyone, especially with elevators that go straight to rooms and people walking in with giant golf bags and the like. Security was really tight for a few years after 9/11, then got lax in the last few years. I imagine it'll get tighter again - for example they would search cars going into parking lots, blocked off the parking spots closest to the elvators (car bombs), etc and a lot of that got rolled back in the last few years.

Listening to MSNBC and they mention there's a major gun show in LV soon.

There is a gun show every weekend in Vegas, its pretty small and mostly hobby stuff and mostly knives/ammo/etc. All guns sold in Nevada require a background check, even gun shows and private party sales - it was a citizen law passed in 2016.

Already is. But hotel security isn't gonna run every person through a metal detector before they walk in. Not a good look for a tourist city. We're slowly becoming a blue state (thanks Clark County) and getting tougher on guns.

Still won't stop any psychopath from getting a cache of guns.

There are victims right now that deserve support after everything that's gone down. Please don't turn this into a gun control debate or whatever and distract from this heinous crime.

While your heart is probably in the right place, this is an ongoing problem that isn't going to be solved by thoughts and prayers.

Not being able to find a motive would be far scarier than finding an easy one. What it means is that because of our culture of guns and violence in the US, literally anyone you think is “normal” or “nice” can become a mass killer with ease.

Dumb lazy logic always ruining everything

I’m quite surprised that switzerland is so high up on that graph. But man, America is hurting itself by not implementing gun proper gun control. It can still be legal, but make the people who want one, really work for it.

.... I feel the timing of your statements, that I do not agree with any capacity, are a bit wrong. There are victims right now that deserve support after everything that's gone down. Please don't turn this into a gun control debate or whatever and distract from this heinous crime.

How and why did this happen? I'm legit shook because this is the last thing I expected to wake up to. Everyone in the venue outside of this gun wielding maniac are great people so it sucks to see this happen to them. We're due for a response from the person that resides in white house at 10:30 am. Just show some empathy for once and try to live up to your responsibility.

Yes, when a mentally unstable person kills dozens of people, months after Trump made access to guns for mentally unstable persons easier, is obviously the wrong time to talk.

How fucking irresponsible of me.

Because it wouldn't make a difference? You seriously think if they ban guns and someone wants to hurt a bunch of people, they won't sneak to in anyway? If people bring their firearm to a hotel, it's for self-defense.

I just heard about this at work and then went to OT.

Holy shit, this is so fucking free. RIP and respect to all the families and those involved with the victims.

Also, this was a pure American it seems, I'm curious to see how this will get processed in the coming hours/days.

Of course. The system doesn’t work if there is a loophole. Chicago is evidence enough of that. That is why there needs to be a state level start to this. The concept is a clearer projection of what is and is not allowed in the city. I was just in Vegas and I saw no indication of firearm laws and in a place like the US where many are packing it is oddly invisible.

The Swiss all keep their army gun, if i remember correctly.
So many homes have a gun.

Lol, Iceland is amazing. There is basically no crime there, it seems.

Other than secret service level security, I don't know how you reliably prevent something like this if there are buildings that overlook these venues. Not without these businesses taking extreme screening measures that no one is going to like. I'm not sure what else you'd do beside provide some kind of preventative covering, but you may as well just host the event indoors at that point.

Possibly but that would require people understanding this from an economic perspective rather than a 'DONT TOUCH MY GUNS" point of view in order for the people to support any statute that prevents that kind of ownership. Needless to say, i don't have the most faith that will happen.

Precisely. Vehicles, knives etc have certain functions that are integral to all societies around the world.

Guns are designed to destroy whatever's in their way. That's it.

It's amazing that we're still debating gun control and not acting. Meanwhile, incidents like these will continue to happen on the massive scale, and the NRA will continue to put the politicians in bed with them.

Also, last I checked in most states its harder to get an 18 wheeler than an assault rifle.

Would stricter gun laws have even stopped a case like this (besides barring all gun ownership)? Man had no criminal records nor had a history of mental disease.

Damn up to 58 dead now and 500+ injured (Per CNN). That is scary.

I have a Vegas trip planned for December, which includes a concert... makes you really think.

I should clarify, someone stated that guns were allowed and I was wondering why. I know rules wouldn't stop them, we need stronger regulation as a whole

It depends on your definition of mass shooting, if its 4+ deaths then there have been 35, if its random civilians then its closer to 14 or 15 this year in the USA. The 270 number widely quoted around includes a lot of gang violence shootings.
14 or 15 is just about one a month! That's practically NO murder at all!

I feel a lot better now that I know multiple people aren't being shot dead on a daily basis in the US. Thanks!!

Last thing I want at a hotel or anywhere is security like this. A heathy society shouldn’t need it. Vegas especially doesn’t want it because it pretty well prides itself on its moral freedom.
