Just horrible. I'm anti gun ownership outside of very controlled scenarios but that's for later discussion. Right now a huge number of lives have been lost, friends and relatives bereaved and people injured and scared witless and it's just terrible to see/read about it and know it's pure luck who lived, died or got injured.

Condolences and I hope help and counseling is provided for those alive and impacted by this.

TV news saying shooter went on a large gambling binge before the shooting. Tens of thousands.
FYI - the source there is the Wall Street Journal:

WSJ : Las Vegas Suspect Likely Used Automatic Rifle in Massacre

The gunman who authorities said killed at least 58 people at a Las Vegas music festival appears to have used at least one fully automatic rifle and had more than a dozen other firearms in his hotel room, a law-enforcement official said.

Investigators found 18 to 20 firearms, some fully automatic, in a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, the law-enforcement official said. That is from where the suspect, identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, allegedly fired upon thousands of concertgoers below. The weapons included AR-15-style and AK-47-style rifles as well as a large cache of ammunition, the official said.

And tweeted out by the National editor of The Daily Beast.

The whole concept of trying to "help" the situation by grabbing a gun and coming back into a dangerous situation, essentially making yourself another target and putting even more people in danger, is just baffling to me. Let the police do their job.

Agreed. The idea that things would have been better if somehow x percent of people had been armed here (even if adequately trained) is insane. Every person that pulls a gun in a crowd this size, in that much chaos could now be mistaken for the shooter. That's before you consider the location of the shooter and the issues that would've arose there.

This delusion exists that an armed citizenry is going to magically turn into a SWAT unit in every relevant situation and it's fucking mind blowing.

Fucckkk. I feel like the death toll will rise with that amount of injured. God damnit
Sadly, wounds from automatic weapons are usually severe. As a Norwegian, we learned that from our own mass shooting 6 years ago. I fear it might increase some more.

How? Why? This is beyond bizarre.

Apparently he was shooting at people 12 football fields away? 1000+ yards.

I practice shooting a few times a month, and have been a shooter since I was very little. Only Prone, or on a bench, can I hit a target 700 yards away. And that is with a high mag scope firing very slowly. At that distance rapid fire shots would spray everywhere, there would be people hit or dead that were not anywhere near the concert. This keeps getting stranger.

I could wrap my head around it if this guy was a seal sniper maybe. Even then its insanity.

Seen a few places state he was a regular on the strip and people knew him as a rich asshole.
Yeah this is very strange. My right eyebrow has been elevated all morning. The addition in all this isn't adding up to me.

The Venue was packed with people. It's not like he was taking aimed shots at that rate.

He was shooting into a crowd. His effective target area was pretty big.

When do we get to call him a terrorist? Didn’t he literally commit an act of terrorism?
When he is revealed to be a terrorist. People here dont actually seem understand the word terrorist that all. Til his agenda is revealed he is and was a useless sack of shit.

The target was massive.

Motive defines terrorism, along with intent to cause (wider) fear. If he killed just to kill, it isn't really terrorism.

They’re still digging into it. Something will come up about his opinions or views- but yeah, I get that it’s not textbook.

Still, the “Kenny Rogers-ification” of this man would be a disgusting thing.

This story just gets more disturbing. Unbelievable.

Take this shit to the other thread ffs.

There are many posters on here whose sole interest is whether or not this guy will be called a terrorist. It's ridiculous.

A lot of people think terrorism is just trying to scare or put fear in people but that is only half its purpose—it must be for a political agenda as well. If it turns out this guy had a political ideology he wanted to enforce and killed people to get it across then it would be, by definition, terrorism. Even CNN doesn’t understand this.

Which is worse? Religious extremist organizations carrying out acts of mass violence, or a supposedly free society that spontaneously generates even bloodier acts of mass violence on a regular basis?

Honestly, I don’t even care if this is labeled as Terrorism or not. Would it change anything? I’m just bewildered we know and have the means to curb this and yet we still do nothing hoping all 300 million of us will wake up one morning and forget about all of this and assume every gun owner will always do the most sensible thing to do.

I actually believe in responsible gun ownership. I have friends and family who keep a single handgun SAFELY in their home in case of serious emergency. But what moron wants to say that this dude could have gotten away with hoarding 20+ firearms, including rifles, and not been on somebody's radar in Japan, Australia, or Germany?

But here, he blends into the crowd until he snaps and then it's too late.

He coulda been a egotistical, sociopath, who was considering suicide but had too much pride to go out quietly in the night, decided to commit this horrific act.

Honestly, as much as people think this needed days in advance preparation, I don't think it did, he lived just outside of Vegas, was a regular in town, his home and cache of guns was literally an hour drive away from Mandalay Bay.

As unnerving and shitty as it is, this guy had all the time and privacy to set up camp in his suite to do this... He didn't need to be sneaky (not at all) He didn't even need to be a professional/military to execute this. He just had to be a madman, a psychopath with access to waay too many guns than any human being should have!

Shooting from 32 floors up into a concert crowd of 22,000 (tightly packed) = spraying everywhere was all he needed, unfortunately

So everyone who owns guns is racist and xenophobic?

Nope. That's why I included the word "and".

It's stupid & naive fantasy wish-fulfillment , but it's just so hard to live in a country that so aggressively creates self-inflicted wounds (bullets or no).

Bah. Maybe I should just stay off the internet today.

I care because as of right now the press and a lot of shitty Americans use "terror" synonymously with "Islam" and "Muslim". That's fucked up.

I would definitely at least stay off Facebook... I'm probably going to go on a long walk after lunch.

Horrific tragedy and loss of so many innocent. But its just a shooting, a lone wolf, a deranged individual, but nothing related to terrorism cause he was not someone named 'ahmad' or 'muhammad' etc

Thank God this was not a so called "muslim" or us muslims probably would have been deported or rounded up by now.

The target was massive.
Exactly, and at this point it didn't matter. If he were closer, the death toll would be higher. There's many factors such as windage that can change the amount of accuracy.

500+ people injured is simply due to ricochets and possible injuries in crowds.
