But if the guns and massive magazines are legally purchased and you're a youtube search a way from a way to make that gun automatic... You see my point?
So then what you are asking for is a complete ban and confiscation of all guns across the US, similar to the UK and Australia. I think that's an unrealistic idea.
Look up gat crank and bump stock mods on youtube, they are fully legal.

True that fully auto receivers are illegal, but it could have been a gat crank or bump stock.
That's interesting. I'll look into that. But I don't think the legality of the weapon is what mattered to the terrorist.

This is frightening. Almost half of the US has such a difference in opinions on gun control. There's no way any concrete control laws can be passed with a divide like this.

There's a clear majority in favour of the first five, and that would be a great start.

It seems there is some common ground on gun reforms that everyone can agree on. Congress just needs to stop being a pussy and get this done.

Have there been any studies which question whether banning the mentally ill from owning guns could lead to people that are mentally ill avoiding going to a doctor for treatment? I've always strongly supported banning gun ownership from those that are mentally ill, but just today I had the thought that it could have the unexpected repercussion of even more mentally ill individuals not getting the help they need. Along those lines, what mental illnesses qualify for a ban? >18% of the population has an anxiety disorder - but there are many different disorders that are classified as anxiety disorders. Which qualify for the ban?

I hate they call themselves Pro life and dems don't call them out on that. They're against abortion. That's it.

The term actually started by actual pro-life people who were against war, death penalty, and abortion.

It was then used as a political marketing tool, to make the other side seem like pro-death. Of course to combat this they adopt pro-choice. I doubt pro-choice people are consistently pro-choice for everything either. Although the pro-life side did start it.

Really both sides should use honest terms these days.

I mentioned magazines. Capping magazine sizes and the amount of ammo a person can purchase at once would be a great start for making sure shit like this doesn't happen. The previous assault rifle ban would also ban long guns that could be modified to be fully auto.

But, sure, do nothing. Watch the copycats roll in.

This is frightening. Almost half of the US has such a difference in opinions on gun control. There's no way any concrete control laws can be passed with a divide like this.

After the Trump speech in Huntsville, Alabama I had an epiphany and even spoke to a friend about it that night. The one issue that unifies 95% of conservatives in California, Michigan and Alabama is not religion or economic theory it's "gun rights" and the 2nd amendment.

About 5 minutes into the speech Trump says something to the effect of: "If you would've voted for Hillary, she would have taken your guns away." The crowed roared like feeding red meat to Lions.

I think that President Trump, being a New Yorker, actually believes in gun control. But he's the scummiest politician who received millions upon millions from the NRA.

I believe most Americans (60% or so) would want more stringent gun control but the right, as Sarah Huckabee Sanders just did, will frame the debate in a different way. "Well Chicago has the toughest gun laws!" It is infuriating and depressing.

Sorry I'm behind on the news. I know he's dead but were they able to confirm the shooter's motives? I've seen people on Facebook claim "ISIS is taking credit" but these are pro-Trumpers it's so hard for me to believe what they say.

Yeah I think I am goign to take a break from this for the rest of the day, been glued to the TV since 6am, my head hurts.

Anyway, be good to each other GAF, stop hurling insults at each other and pointing fingers, let's find the truth in all this, what caused and what can we do to prevent it in the future... and stop convoluting it with political and social topics that only distracts from the truth.

But if I amy give my two cents; As a Canadian, gun control, stricter gun possession rules and what have you is a good place to start.

Good day and God bless!

It's annoying because it directly affects us as well. Roughly 70% of gun violence in Toronto was from guns smuggled across the border and gun violence is rising. Until they apply some sort of gun control we will always share a part of their problem. When I was a kid they busted a guy who had smuggled something like 30 guns from the US, lived just across the street basically.

One side is a little less heinously disingenuous and hypocritical. I think you know which.

Good questions, it's a super open ended poll most likely. Not sure what "mentally ill" really means in the context of diagnosis or how they keep track of who is on the list. Good point about if people would skip going to the dr. in fear of getting on this list, but I have a feeling that most people voluntarily seeking out treatment know they need help, even if that means they can't purchase guns anymore.

There are multiple reports that ISIS did take credit and claim that he became Muslim in the past few months.

Like all reports that come from ISIS with regards to these mass shootings in the US, ISIS is full of shit. It will take time before we learn a motive.

Gun ownership is essentially the modern day equivalent of Gladiatorial games.

Let the people have their good old senseless violence to distract them from everything else that is wrong with the country.

I could sneeze on a sandwich and get someone sick and ISIS would take credit for it

-Muslim does something bad

"Muslim ban now!"

-Mexican does something bad

"Built the wall!"

-White man does something bad

"Let's not talk about consequences. Respect the victims!"

White supremacy in a nutshell

its so fucking embarrassing that everyone ignores this every. single. time.
Only one type of person is “ignoring” this.

What ethnicity was the shooter? Terrorist, thug, or lone wolf?
I’ll let you guess based off of media coverage and social media.

Wish he wasn't dead already because I'd like to know if the country music concert was chosen only for the density of the crowd or if it held some other significance.

Haven't had a chance to say it before, but for what little it's worth: my condolences to all involved and affected.

To paraphrase a former U.S. president: "As long as you let the poorest white man own as many guns as he likes, fire them in his back yard whenever he wants and make him believe he's "protecting his home and family", he won't mind that you're stealing from him, lying to him and fucking him over in almost every other conceivable way."
The definition of stupidity. But hey, mah gunz!

This just makes me think of our priorities in general. 45k people die every year due to lack of healthcare in America. 30k people die due to guns every year, 10k of those gun deaths are caused by homicide. More civilians have died from gun deaths since Sandy hook than soldiers who died in vietnam total...

What will it take to recognize that these things are an epidemic of America's failures as a society?

I don't care about what argument you want to make about "well you cant prevent people from not caring for them selves healthwise, people will get guns anyway somehow ect", we could ABSOLUTELY chip away at those numbers to a notable degree for both problems if we had our priorities straight, even if we didn't eliminate the problems entirely. That's more than enough of a reason to try.

But of course we obfuscate and allow people in power and in the media to distract us because meteors aren't falling down from the skies for each and every one of us to see...its just sad. This will also go on with nothing done, until the next incident, because civilians have super low attention spans

In the 2015 San Bernardino attack, they used higher capacity magazines than what is legal in California.

Maybe making all states adhere to the same regulations will make higher capacity magazine harder to obtain but could that really happen?

You mentioned it yourself. It's not hard to get guns across state lines. Hell, a lot of the guns causing problems in chicago come from out of state. This is why shit needs to be done at a federal level.

Again, what you're arguing for is to let this shit happen. To try nothing and do nothing. You will see a worse tragedy than this one in your lifetime with that attitude.

Hey GAF friends, I'd start up a new thread myself, but I'm still a junior member, so I feel this would be the most appropriate place for this.

My friend, Aubree's boyfriend, Austin Davis, was at the concert, but has not been heard from since the shooting started.

From my understanding, Aubree has provided his description to the various hospitals and places treating the wounded out there and called the various numbers that have been provided to her, but has had no luck so far.

If any of you from VegasGAF or who are currently in Vegas can keep an eye out for him we would all be very grateful. Feel free to PM me here or contact Aubree directly if you come across him or any info. Thanks everyone.

Edit - Here's the thread that efyu_lemonardo started up for me to keep everything in one spot: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1441820

Republicans don’t care because gun violence and lack of healthcare both disproportionately harm poor people and POC. Meanwhile, try putting a roadblock in the way of rich white men and it will be eradicated in no time.

Paradoxes in conservative thought?

What a shocker. ;)

It reminds me of those people yelling about gun violence but paradoxically also not being for more border security, almost like magical spells are what's bringing illegal weapons into the country!~

Fine. But in my opinion, as long as you guys can buy them "because you can" and "to have fun" things like this will continue to happen. I hope you see this or that I'm wrong.

Thats why I am in favor of way more harder gun regulations.

edit: anyways I feel like I am derailing the thread.

Maybe PM a mod and see if they can post it for you, I feel it'll get buried in this thread as it moves so quick.

“Too early to call this domestic terrorism”?

Like, what? So this guy was shooting people to show them a good time?

So...

Not illegal?

Edit: Heard the guns were modded any tho, for clarification.

Well, I don't imagine anyone is going to go on a rampage with a legally owned fully automatic weapon in today's age.

And if he illegally modified a normal semi-auto firearm, why are we talking about gun control?

I'll make a thread. Is the title "VegasGAF: Your Help is Required" ok?

Edit: thread is here

True that, US is like our corrupt and shady big bro that keeps bringing its troubles home with him, and we are forced to deal with them without voluntarily choosing to be part of it.
It affects us indeed, whether we like it/want it or not.

And nevermind all the guns being smuggled to Canada, what about us visiting the US? We share a 9,000 kilometer long border with them. I find myself in the UIS a few times a year, and you bet an air of tension takes over my body everytime I cross the border to Buffalo... I am always a nerve wreck, I know if I find myself with in a predicament with stangers/cops in US, shit might turn lethal in seconds... I try to keep to myself.
