Steven Universe: Save The Light (CN/Grumpyface) announced for consoles/PC, ATL sequel

Is anyone going to address this?

Hey, dev here...

So, I totally get it's frustrating how vague this has been. The jist of the situation is that CN is still finalizing some negotiations that are putting a hold on announcing the full list of platforms. The only platform confirmed for now is PS4 (however we have revealed that it will not be a PS4 exclusive.)

So sorry it has to be so vague right now, but our hands are tied. I believe specifics will be confirmed very soon though. Hope this helps a little :/ Stay tuned!

What about whether it's retail or not? I'd imagine it'll be a downloadable game, but if that one crummy beat'em up could get a retail release, it'd be a shame for this not to.

That's pretty informative, actually. Really appreciate it. Hope someone pushes for a PC version.

Thank you.

I shall invest in this heavily.

Small Save The Light update from the Grumpyface twitter.

Demo impressions and articles
Polygon: Steven Universe: Save the Light is a game by fans, but it’s not just for them
Polygon: Steven Universe: Save the Light’s cast gets bigger with its coolest mechanic
The Verge: Steven Universe: Save the Light will build out the beloved series’s mythology

“It’s been liberating, really,” said Graham of Steven Universe: Save the Light, which is both an Attack the Light sequel and Grumpyface’s first console project. “We always had a bigger vision for the mobile game than we were able to do ... [with] the show lending itself to the scope we wanted and us being RPG fans and kind of wanting to get into some of these deeper RPG mechanics.”

It’s those mechanics that seem like the most likely way to pull in those who don’t necessarily love Steven Universe, but love a good, old-fashioned RPG. We got to demo a few levels of Save the Light on PlayStation 4 and quickly found a lot to love. The 2.5D graphical style is gorgeous, for starters; it’s a more stylized version of the beautiful Steven Universe cartoon’s animation, and it helps to set a lighthearted tone for the game. Even those who don’t recognize all the background characters populating the main hub world, Beach City, will appreciate how detailed each one is, and how adorably everything is drawn, from buildings to trees.

The battle system is also familiar and fun. It’s a combination of active time-based battles from Final Fantasy, where characters wait for a timer to go off so they can attack, and the Mario RPG games, which grant attack bonuses when players hit the button at just the right time. Save the Light also adds in relationship stat effects and a skill points gauge, so that the team of four can perform special moves to cut down the time spent in a fight. It’s one of those easy to pick up but slightly tougher to master kind of games, based on what we played. We couldn’t get enough.

That much was obvious in the opening moments of the demo version we previewed earlier this month. From the beginning, it plants players in a fully realized, 3D version of Beach City, Steven’s fictional hometown. The open world isn’t as vast as, say, Hyrule in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it’s easy to see that a great deal of care went into re-creating the boardwalk from the show, complete with its shops, hideaways, and the colorful supporting cast milling around. (Graham also admits that the game’s style was inspired by Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, so the team’s love for Nintendo is as clear as ever.)

In Save The Light, Steven explores a variety of worlds on his quest to rescue the ancient light weapon he befriended in the first game. Joining Steven on his adventure are the Crystal Gems — alien warriors Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl — along with Steven’s best friend, Connie, and his father, Greg Universe. As in the series and original game, the Gems have a variety of combat abilities, like Pearl’s spear and beam attacks, and Garnet’s magic gauntlets. Connie and Greg add even more depth to the action; Connie’s sword makes her a frontline fighter, while Greg’s guitar lets him amplify the abilities of other party members. Steven, with few offensive abilities of his own, serves as the support character, since he can heal his friends, shield them from danger, and even resurrect them if they’re defeated. Not only are these abilities useful in battle, but the developers brought some of them — like Greg’s musical talents — into the open world, too, adding platforming and puzzle-solving elements to the game.
"“Who you’re trying to impress or support is a huge part of the gameplay.”"

“When we did the first game, we had all these big, ambitious ideas that we had to put into a smaller game,” Sugar says. “Now, we get to expand on everything, especially a lot of the relationship dynamics that in these small ways, sort of snuck into the first game. Like, you tell a joke that you know one of the Gems will laugh at. Who you’re trying to impress or support has gone from a kind of Easter egg to being a huge part of the gameplay.”

That relationship system is key to the game, and it’s part of what makes the adventure fit so well alongside the series it draws from. During battle, the game rewards players for defending teammates, or executing a perfect combo by having characters build up relationship points with each other. Those points build up over time, and when maxed out, they can unlock new abilities. For instance, Steven and Connie can gain the ability to fuse into Stevonnie, an “experience” who embodies the best of both characters.

Digging that battle theme. It's almost like the show's soundtrack composers are helping out with this project (which would work super well). I'm sure I'll enjoy it either way, as it seems to expand upon the mobile game, but I do wonder the price range they're going for with it.

Oh man, as a huge SU fan I can't believe I missed this until now. I bought Attack the Light day one, an easy decision considering how cheap it was, and loved it. Being able to run around Beach City is going to be so awesome.

The one thing I really hope the most is that there are more fusions, ideally all of them. It would give the game such a huge tactical aspect deciding who to fuse and when, like Chrono Trigger's dual/triple techs on steroids.

Aside from Stevonnie, the cast could form Opal, Sugilite, Sardonyx, Alexandrite and Smoky Quartz, which is a huge variety of weapon and fighting styles.

been quietly waiting for this since they announced it.
the mobile game had some intense flaws and boring writing but showed a lot of promise and really reminded me of old paper mario games

happy to see minor fusions and more characters and hopefully some more variety in enemies and puzzles.

mobile game was way too charming

Snapped a few screens from the Gamespot footage:

Looks like an amazing step up from the original. Beautiful 3D world, complex upgrade paths, musical puzzles, fusion... it seems like everything I wanted in a sequel.

My only regret is that I'll only be able to have one of the Gems on my team. No way am I ever benching Connie or Greg.

This Gamespot article has about 20 minutes of gameplay footage. You get a good look at the battle system, overworld traversal, the quest system and how the dialogue choices affect what happens in the game ("Dave"?).

Sold on that guitar add to the music when Greg activates his attack. Looking forward to this, Attack the Light was fun if not a tad bit simple in areas. This seems to be a full fledged RPG as I like 'em.

That information is outdated:

There's nothing to negotiate on the PC, though, unless it's a reference to internal negotiations regarding a final budget for the game, in which case platforms will need to be prioritised. I also see three other possibilities:

- Sony coughed up some cash for temporary exclusivity
- CN hadn't yet decided whether a PC version is worth pursuing and is waiting on other pieces to fall where they may before announcing it/hasn't yet decided whether a PC version is worth pursuing, or
- There is no PC version

This blog post basically confirms that the only console platforms officially being worked on are PS4 and Xbox One, but doesn't preclude there being additional platforms added in the future. It's up to the publisher (Cartoon Network). Seems Grumpyface is ready and willing to port if they're given the go-ahead.

Not sure if we're still including PC in the equation, as it's not technically "a console". Some clarification would be nice.

Have to try Attack the Light first as Im hearing great comments about it. Is its story canon?

Also, since we are getting stevonnie: Lapis/Peridot fusion pls. kthx.

Booo, was hoping to get this for Switch and PC :( I don't own a Xbone or a PS4 :/

So any announcements come from the stream? Release date? The remaining two playable characters?

EDIT: Checked GrumpyFace's Twitter and answered my first question. Looks like the game has been delayed from Summer till Fall.

Looking rad. Shame PC is off the table for now. Meanwhile, I need to get around to playing Attack the Light.

It is? Andre mentions PC multiple times in the list of platforms in the above stream.

EDIT: Dang it, so I guess that was a goof on Andre's part. Ah well.

Pardon the bump but both the OK KO game and Save the Light will be at PAX West.
If anyone is going there please post any info you can about it from there.

It's been a while. Grumpyface recently posted on Tumblr that they won't be at NYCC, but they will have "some very big reveals coming" after NYCC. They've also been pretty adamant on Twitter that they're in crunch right now and that Save the Light is releasing "soon".

Also Wikipedia is claiming a release date of November 5th for PS4, XBO, and Nintendo Switch(!!), but Grumpyface has said on Twitter that info is false.

I hope this is coming to Switch! It was announced right before it became a success and they never specified, but it's the perfect place for it.

Hello, GAF friends!

Today CN announced our launch dates! It's 10/31 on PS4 and 11/3 on Xbox One. We hope you'll pick it up and cannot wait to see what you think.

We've poured mucho blood/sweat/tears into this one, especially with it being a learning experience as our first console game. We hope you love it, but we're also looking forward to all constructive feedback in order to learn more for the future!

For Switch/PC owners: I've been making the rounds with this PSA, but we're very aware of the demand for the game on these platforms, and also very sorry we weren't able to make it happen for launch. It's a combination of publishing logistics and our team being on the smaller side, and being very loaded with getting the first versions we started development on into the best state they could be for launch.

We very much want the game on Switch/PC and will be doing all we can to make it happen as soon as we can. Please keep an eye out for when we can discuss more.

For now... here's some new screens!:
