The pacing in the first game is godlike. 20 hours of incredibly varied gameplay and environments which just flies by. By contrast TEW2 feels grindy and repetitive due to pick-ups being more abundant and less useful. Even later when the game becomes more linear, there's still moments when you don't feel like you're accomplishing much.

I'm really impressed with the visuals though. It's true, it's inconsistent. There are times when it looks pretty underwhelming, but at its best, it's a real looker.

Pacing is too almost different to compare imo. TEW1 is a propulsive game that sends the player barreling through different scenarios, one after the other, often built around combat encounters. TEW2 is much slower and methodical, often preferring the to let the player meander for hours on end in large non-linear areas where combat is generally more emergent than scripted. Some sections of TEW2 definitely resemble the first game's design, but those moments are ultimately fleeting and still often choose to trade some of that Mikami setpiece encounter goodness for slower progression and horror sequences.

To be clear: I don't mean to imply that one is better than the other. They're just super different. TEW2 is absolutely not the sequel I wanted. TEW1 is fucked up enough that I really just wanted that design again, but polished to a mirror sheen. Despite that, I'm still having a great time with the sequel.

I also loved TEW1 but it was a messy mix of inconsistent and unrelated ideas a lot of the time.

Call it anything but TEW1 was not a consistent cohesively designed gamed.(probably on purpose)
 
Anyone know how to progress in the warehouse in town? You have to hit a switch to turn on the switch that opens the big door, then go inside where there's a red barrel you can kick over and what looks like a crouch opening covered by a piece of wood that I can't seem to break. Any ideas?

Do you get anything if, after tripping one of those cables that slows down time and makes an enemy run towards you, you manage to kill the enemy before they leave the slow-mo area? I missed every time I tripped one of those cables so far lol

Otherwise, I played 5 hours so far without even going to the first story mission. I explored the whole city and got a couple of new weapons, did quite a lot of skill and weapon upgrades too.

Then on to my new question. Gun upgrades are for all guns of that type right? So if I upgrade Shotgun, if I find three different types of shotguns they all get those benefits? If that's the case, any suggestions on best gun types to upgrade?
 
Really enjoying this so far. I spent three hours running around the town hub in chapter three collecting everything I could find and exploring. This game is a definite improvement over the first, but a part of me kind've misses the environments in the first game -- I liked the gothic style some areas had, and visually it was very memorable at times. Obviously I'm not far enough into the game to see what other environments there are though, so this compliant could change.

Yes, but there are some later weapons that certain upgrades won't apply to. Definitely start upgrading ASAP.

I haven't tried Casual, but Survival is pretty easy, so if Casual is substantially easier even than that, it'll pretty much be a cakewalk.

You can't literally autopilot, but as long as you understand the systems and prioritize efficiency, it's very difficult to actually die.

You don't get anything special for killing the enemy fast. The one tripwire on the second floor of one of the buildings leads to an important upgrade though.

Not sure how I came off in my post but I loved the pacing in TEW1 the game, every moment was most unexpected as another poster just said it barrels you through one scenario after the other. TEW2 pacing is terrible in comparison so far yet some reviews have stated it's better than the first.

Predator is really bad. It works, but you essentially have to be ten feet or less away for it to activate.

I'm not finding Corner Kill all that great so far (up to Chapter 12) either. I saw someone suggest alerting an enemy and then running back to cover, but that almost never does anything for me. They usually just stop too far away for the skill to activate, and they literally need to be 1-2 feet away before the icon lights up. Now if an enemy is standing directly inside a doorway and you're on the other side crouched, it seems to work well enough, but I rarely ever find myself in that situation.

Also, it's buggy as fuck. I can't count how many times I've tried to use the skill (sometimes the icon doesn't even appear and it will work) and Sebastian crouch rushes like in Gears of War beyond the enemy. You can't even do that normally, so it's an issue with the skill. It's trying to behave like Predator when it shouldn't.
 
For folks that have it what do you make of the SloMo skill ? Worth the 75,000 gel ? I love slowmo in games so I'm saving up for it but wondering if it's an actual worthwhile skill ingame. I'll just make a save before actually buying it but just wondering if many folk are using it at all.

Push Kick is for fuck all as well, I honestly can't get it working at all. I might have saw it once and that was it but I can't get it reliably working.

That's correct. Don't know about consoles, but the tutorial for pc controls was wrong and caused 1 out of like 5 total deaths in the entire game. The pc tutorial tells you to position yourself behind an enemy, click "space" (which is the cover button), and the press "E" (which is the interact button, not the stealth kill button). I did that and I ended up sprinting head-first into the back of the enemy because I was supposed to hit "F", not "E" like the tutorial told me. Got immediately spotted by like 5 enemies and died. I did'nt change the default bindings for any of these buttons so Tango appeared to have messed up explaining an already inconsistent ability.

No it's not. At all. Pacing and the tone are all over the fucking map and not in a good way. It starts out really strong, gets worse, kind of recovers and then shits the bed becoming RE5 and RE6. It's definitely way more memorable than this game however.
 
Finished. Gameplay-wise, the final chapters were pretty great. The final boss in particular was gnarly as fuck, which I appreciated.

The story never really hooked me though. I never felt particularly invested in anyone, though I did think that Sebastian's character arc was well executed.

Overall, I think the game was pretty stellar and I'd recommend it highly to people looking for a spiritual successor to RE4. It doesn't quite reach the highs of that game, but it doesn't sink to the lows of TEW1 or RE6.

Really hoping there's a future for open-world horror at Tango and Bethesda.

Man, predator freaking sucks and is janky af. The prompt to run up to sneak kill someone is incredibly inconsistent and impossible to predict how close you have to be for it to trigger.

What a waste of 12k boogers :(
 
Just a few quick thoughts, still very early into the game:

-People mentioned these new enemies are like clickers, but I did not realize the extent- the "lost" are literally clickers in the way they move and their sounds. Seriously, it almost sounds like the lost sound effects were literally ripped out of TLOU.

-I see Sebastian's melee attacks are still him drunkenly flailing his arms, at least this time its with a knife.

-Union has kind of grown on me, still prefer my medieval castles/villages but there is a certain joy is going from house-to-house and raiding its supplies. Good to see atmosphere is still strong. Wish we saw more of that art house in the beginning though...Stefano and that house have real strong Hannibal (the tv show) vibes and I would love to see more of that.

-I really don't like how there are so many resources to keep track of now.

Also, what do you guys recommend upgrading in terms of weapons? Is sprint time still a must like it was in TEW1?
 
I'm in chapter 7 or something.

Going with the more open levels I think is a mistake. You really take away a lot of the forward momentum in a game like this.

Still enjoying it, despite not really liking the combat. :P It can be really unnerving, I don't get people saying it's isn't scary. Narratively, I don't like the whole Matrix-like thing. Didn't really like that twist in the original. It completely takes away from the supernatural atmosphere. I don't see how it's in any way an effective idea for a horror game.
 
Whoever invented the
ghost lady
in chapter 3 is a genius and at the same time should have that concept go die in a fire multiple times.

I think its the first feeling when I was
trapped in the small white house and the ghost lady's blue background and humming song happened...I WAS FUCKING TRAPPED IN THE FUCKING ROOM AND I HAD NOWHERE TO GET OUT...claustrophobic as fuck

Upgrading harpoon arrows is still really useful, excellent damage against bigger baddies and pipes are plentiful to craft extras. Shock arrow upgrades are very useful against groups of lost to stomp em.

Lvl 3 smoke arrows allow you to sneak to kill enemies, but I haven't gotten it yet. So I don't know if you can front kill them like TEW1 with flash arrows. I would have test it to see if it's better than shock arrows because TEW2 has longer stealth kill animations than the TEW1. With shock arrows the stomp animation if fairly quick, allowing you to pull off multiple kills.

As for body upgrades, movement speed to 150% while in stealth and less noise while walking is a must. 170% sprint recovery is also incredibly useful.
 
The shootout minigame was really easy until Very Hard in Gallery Mode... Holy fuck this is strict. Seems like it was made with a mouse in mind but I'm on PS4.
 
So I'm 9 chapters in. It's very good, but I have to say that I prefer the TWE1. The open nature of some of the levels really drags down the pace of the game. I think stealth feels less smooth and less effective. I miss having grenades. The enemies aren't as scary. The game itself isn't as scary.

So personally I prefer how TWE1 was put together, but TWE2 is still very good.

Yeah, the aiming is like how it was in pre-patch Uncharted 3. I don't remember if this was the case with TEW1 but this shooting gallery mode is the only time in this franchise where you really need to line up a ton of good shots in a row. Never had to aim like this in Akuma.

Yea it is pretty bad. The PS4 version also doesn't have a lot of the graphical options the PC one has. Some of them make sense, but we could at least get the FOV slider...

For handguns, (spoiler for a late-game weapon)
the revolver
seems to aim smoother for whatever reason. I haven't been having too many issues lining up headshots now. Before, with the combination of the quick enemy movement, precise hitboxes, and crappy aiming sensitivity, it felt impossible at times.

There are a lot of atmospheric and encounter design changes in EW2 compared to EW1, but the biggest mechanical change is definitely the lack of matches. I have no clue why they nixxed it, it was one of the mechanics that gave EW1 a more unique game flow.

1. Is the Push Kick glitched or something? I'm on Nightmare and I never get the prompt to do it, even though the enemy looks stunned. How are you supposed to stun the enemy in a way that allows you to use the kick?

2. The Enemy Alert icon that can be toggled on and off in the options menu (that was in the first game) hasn't appeared for me at all even though I have it turned on.
 
Curious on how people are upgrading their weapons.

I've got damage, clip size and crit on my pistol and shotgun.
Is the crossbow worth upgrading? If so, what would you guys prioritize? The "enable stealth kills in smoke"? Harpoon bolts? I rarely use the crossbow - would love some advice!

I think it's glitched, unfortunately. Never gotten the prompt to trigger either, in 5 or so hours since getting it. That or I've yet to find a way to stun enemies (but like you I've seen the enemy look stunned, just not sitting on their knee like in the Kick Punch tutorial screen). Shock bolts pins them to the ground, which gives you the ability to stomp, but no kickin'. Shame since Push Kick cost ~9k green gel plus a red one.

In your second question, do you mean the "eye" at the center top part of the screen? That one works for me, but I never tried toggling it off. edit: Checked Tutorials and it seems you're talking about what I thought. Really weird it isn't showing at all for you. Is there some other UI option that also hides it maybe? I'm clueless atm, sorry.

Hit them in the knee caps, sometimes once, sometimes twice, they’ll do the stunned animation and the prompt always appears for me.
