Thank you for the write-up! I enjoyed both movies as well and was pleasently surprised by how much I love Kimi no Na Wa considering I didn't like Shinkai's earlier movies too much.
Koe no Katachi isn't perfect, but I feel like it's a nice kind of summary considering that the manga isn't all too short. Waiting weekly for a chapter to release took out a lot of the emotional stress as well, so the later parts weren't all that impactful for me in the manga. In the movie though? Damn... The music also added a lot to it, especially for scenes like
the fight between Shouko and Shoya
. It was a lot worse in the manga in terms of imagery, but the music really got me in that scene and I actually teared up a little.
I really need to reread the manga.
Yeah I was so happy they didn't include that part.
I really liked all the character back stories. Shoko's mother's story is probably the one that I missed the most in the movie. Mashiba as well. He seemed kind of unneeded in the movie although I liked him a lot in the manga, especially because of the scene you mentioned. Him
spilling water on Ishida's teacher
was insanely satisfying!!
I know a lot of people will disagree, but I really prefer the movie's ending. It was a nice conclusion and had some heavy emotional impact, for me at least. The manga's ending was so... unexpected.
They've gotten better, likely because after S3 Ep1 came out people sought them out and were like "these are terrible, I can at least make it somewhat better."
It's just a shame that the author seems to be into naked kids : /
How many scenes do we need dedicated to people talking about the main character's (a 12 years old looking boy btw) penis? Why is hanging girls naked some sort of punishment in this world? Why is the main female character (a 12 years old girl btw) naked in so many scenes? Why is one of the final scenes of the season 2 kids bathing naked?
What's worse is that from the little googling I did it seems that the anime is actually holding back some of these elements with the typical convenient camera angles. Apparently the manga goes with full on nudity which makes me lose any interest in reading it.
It's a shame since everything else is so great.
Hopefully this gets a season 2. I'd love to see where the main plot goes, and at least the anime is trying to keep the nudity to a level that still makes the other elements enjoyable
100% agreed with this. Thats one of the main reasons why I dont really have a desire to check out the manga. I might just read spoilers or something since I am invested in the world and there are many questions I want answered.
In addition, I also just dont understand the trope of putting little kids through all that. Would the story and themes really change that much if the characters were much older?
Nanachi and Mitty's story would still be tragic even if they were much older.
I feel like putting adorable kids through immense suffering is a cheap way to elicit a reaction among viewers. I really dislike the suffering loli genre.
For me, it's between this show and MHA. I still have yet to finish Eccentric Family S2 so that might be in the race as well. Everything else I've watched were meh to good. Even though Abyss had its share of problems, it's hard to ignore all the things it did right and immensely so.

Thats fair, I edited my post to better reflect my feelings on the two separate points. The lewd stuff was irredeemable for sure. Regarding children undergoing torture and stuff, unless their young age actually adds something meaningful to the storyline and themes, it just feels cheap to me. Kids can undergo tragedy and struggles, sure, but I'm just uncomfortable when things become extremely violent and gory.
I agree in general with you guys about these problems with Made in Abyss (although I never felt it was prominent enough to dampen my enjoyment or stop me from recommending it), but I was curious. Do you guys believe there are ways to do those things tastefully and what would they be? For exemple, these kids are going on an adventure, and they need to not only bathe, but other stuff like poop as well. Is there no way to show that stuff tastefully? I know in the case of Made in Abyss the author is a lolicon and the intent is there, but if my intent is just to show that these kids are having to deal with these natural parts of life, is there no way to escape these judgments?

I guess the question is, what do scenes of them bathing and pooping contribute to pushing the story forward? What would the author accomplish by adding these scenes that they absolutely couldnt in any other way? It's implied the characters will bathe and use the bathroom so why is it necessary to show them if they dont add anything of value?
I know this is a mistake. But it's okay. I'm suffering with a friend who read through the VN. We'll watch /UBW and and /Zero when we're done with this.

The anime continues to make Terunori Kuga amazing, and also hearing Yuki Kaji in three anime this season, wow, I love how he is actually a different type of character in each of the anime that they all end up feeling unique. Kuga teasing Yukihira was the best
Also those SoTaku feelings. Amazing.
The anime makes all the food explanations so much better than the manga, I often just skim or skip most of them in the manga since the anime explains it better.
Internet addiction remains compelling as well as how extreme some people are for their phones but some other parts of this anime are kind of dumb and really makes me wonder about the chinese comic artists cause that whole plot about the girls needing to make Hibiki into a man was just awkward, actually this whole subplot continuing on from ep 1 was just awkward and everybody and their granma knew they wouldnt.
Hopefully the anime puts this behind them fast and we can get to the real meat of the story. Please.
This one is focused more on our Yellow Girl, Teru Hayama, the girl who has the heart of a demon outside of pets. Given that she's a demon, it is clear she will have a sister, and she does. Who likes to cook strange shit as a result of Teru being a sickly child. Ironically, it is the sister who puts our other two girls out of commission.
UQ Holder 3 was so stupid. It was a decent ep, but most of the changes were pointless since they sped through it the way they did anyway. And they ruined Shinobu.
The fact that the Council of Elders sent out their own secret scouting party indicates that they have some inkling of what's going on. Their motivations and goals are unclear at this point, but I'm not sure they're incompetent so much as pursuing their own agenda.
Physical torture of children is something that has long been a part of lolicon media, from Enix's Lolicon Complex to Nippon Ichi's Criminal Girls. By setting up the world of Made in Abyss the way he did, the author has given himself plenty of opportunities to indulge in this. That the most popular form of child discipline in this world, as seen both in the orphanage and in Ozen's Seeker Camp, is stringing them up naked, speaks to the intertwined nature of physical torture and sexual interest.
Now I do feel there is artistic merit in the portrayal of Made in Abyss, and the anime in particular emphasizes empathy and humanity with the sufferers in a way that lends it genuine pathos. Nevertheless, I do wish the anime had gone even farther in toning down the manga's distasteful aspects, by, for instance, removing all mentions of being strung up naked and all the gratuitous removing of Riko's clothes.
Alien 9 is perhaps the only anime that does things right without resorting to torture porn. Despite the heavy bodily and psychological tension of entering adolescence, things are presented rather symbolically. In the manga too.
Gunslinger Girl too in a sense.
Narutaru...not so.
Though Alien 9 manga author crossed that line later with Milk Closet manga.
This is Sonobe, a former maid for Yoko. She is also in her thirties. She is clearly in her thirties. She likes to infiltrate schools to self promote. And she gets to be the boss of Yoko.
It turns out the Glutton can actually cook too! How novel. Yamaji got demoted into dog status, as he can be summoned with a stick.
We got two more characters. The little boy who is the "fiance", and the Glutton's young cousin, who knows the little boy, and wants him. She planned out her life up to her 50s.
I can't get over how beautiful this anime is, like damn.
But omg, I thought I was gonna go crazy with how long they drew out the thing Lykos was trying to say at the end. Just spit it out already! Also that ending. Of the things I expected
clowns
were not one of them LMAO
And while the visuals for the ED are pretty boring, I suuuupper love the song. Kinda made me think of Nier music.
Black Clover ep3
Holy shit Asta shut the heck your trap already, my ears are friggin' bleeding over here. Seriously, I do not think I have ever seen a main shonen character so dislikable as this boy, jfc.
I'm interested in the world and what the other characters will be like enough that I keep going, but holy moly his voice. 😬
Juni Taisen ep 3
I am loving this anime. Yeah, it's totally predictable, but I am super enjoying the characters and how they play things out enough that it's still a really fun ride. Even if I know who's gonna die, the deaths still get me like O_O dang..... brutal....
Today's kills were especially brutal, too. This girl isn't messing around FFFF
