The state of NeoGAF

im glad that neogaf is back but to blame this on the off-topic is bs people didnt like that it didnt fit the political view and thats fine every website leans to a side and its never gonna cover everyone and people who didnt want to participate didnt have to so i find this decision heavy handed but ill still see how this is gonna go for now.

This whole ordeal reminds me so much of this:

Welcome to the NeoGAF lynch mob, where you are guilty until proven innocent, where relationships between humans are pure black and white and can never be ambiguous or misread, and where backing off when asked is akin to full-on rape.

Okay.

Simpsons moment for everything foreal.

You're so right though, its pretty pathetic how quick people judge and react.

What other forum? Kotaku references this same fucking story. Tyler has a history of this shit and it's just "gossip" to you.

So ummm, I checked the kotaku article and HOLY SHIT:

In a phone conversation with Kotaku, Leupp said that even after the alleged shower incident, she'd continued her friendship and even had a brief physical relationship with Malka until they had a falling out at E3 2015.

They had a sexual relationship after the alleged incident? So why I should believe this person's accusations again?

Man... I don’t know how I feel about this. I’ve had close friends who’ve been harassed and from time to time they break down and cry. It’s really heartbreaking to see.

It’s bittersweet. Ive been a member for 11 years now and it’s tough to hear all this.

I just don’t know...

Honestly, I don't think doubling down on the lack of moderation transparency is going to help in the long run. How about actually coming up with better moderation guidelines, a less absurd system of punishments than junioring or flat out banning, holding mods accountable when they fuck up, and maybe make an appeals system to handle situations where questionable decisions were made?

This is something I've never understood when I was cleared for registration in 2015. So many times I had seen ridiculous posts but no way to report to mods, vs. TONS of other forums having this as a standard feature.

I'm as liberal as it gets, and I certainly wouldn't be the first to defend Evilore, but let's not make the situation out to be more than it was. Tyler awkwardly misread a situation, but the internet is making it seem like he assaulted the poor girl. When a man and a woman are sharing a hotel room, and there's alcohol involved, and someone goes in the shower and leaves the door open - it's not out of the realm of possibility that a person could misread the signs and make a pass. What's important is that both sides agree that, when she made it clear she wasn't interested, he backed off and respected her wishes. That's the difference between consent and non-consent.

If every man (or woman) was ripped to shreds and had their careers ended because they misread some social signs, half of the country would be out of a job. It sounds like a misunderstanding that never escalated beyond that point. I don't see how anyone can equate this as a 'me too' sexual assault situation. Yes women need to be believed, but in her version of the story he made a mistake and backed off when she made that clear. That's all you can ask of someone in that situation.

This definitely feels like the spark that blew up a gas tank, but let's not make the spark out to be a forest fire. This is a real person's life we're talking about here. This is nothing close to a Harvey Weinstein situation.
Anyone who wants to know what happened, link them to this response, this is 100 what happened. And they remained friends quite a long time after and eventually more. The one time Gaf gets to show they aren't what the woman alt right man children say we are. Way too many of us prove them right. We will rebuild for damn sure though. Thankfully some responses in this thread make it way too easy.

But you see, that's the thing. Tyler let that happen. And he never gave any indication that he cared. Whatsoever. He could have stopped it. At any time. But didn't.

So why believe him at all now, when he says he suddenly cares? When he let that go on for months, with no indication at all that he cared for found it to be a problem at all? If this is how Tyler truly felt, he could have done something a whole lot earlier. But he didn't. He did nothing instead.

So why believe him now instead, that he suddenly cares about any of that? I prefer to believe who people are the first time.

It just makes no sense to do this NOW, instead of say right after or during the US election stuff. Why only blow up the OT now, in the middle of all this harassment-allegations stuff instead? Why were absolutely ZERO indications given that this was something Tyler was considering or how he felt beforehand, absolutely ZERO, if this has nothing to do with the allegations at all? Why now, instead of then?

Nothing about this makes sense. And if this is how you truly feel, that should only make you condemn Tyler moreso, and lesser. Because he had all the problem to do something, for months. But did nothing instead. Just let it happen, without any indication he cared at all.

Until now. I wonder what changed...?

Either way, how can you trust the judgment of such a man who's decisions and feelings just change on a whim like that? He gave no indication of that before. And if that's how he truly felt, he had no reason to keep it hidden. So what does that mean, not just for the present, but also the future? What else is he keeping secret? What other huge changes can happen on a moment's notice?

If that was how he truly felt about he OT, there was no reason not to be more forward about it. He had all the ability to. It's his sight. But he did nothing instead. Until now. Suddenly, all at once. In the middle of something completely unrelated.

That doesn't sound like good judgment to me. Just keeping something like that all bottled up, for days upon days, weeks upon weeks, months upon months, until it all boils out an once. Why not do something sooner? Why not at least give an indication, a warning that things need to change, ANYTHING, ANYTHING AT ALL, that things need to change in the OT, if that's how he felt?

Why now, instead? How can you trust the judgment of a man who hesitated so much, if that's how you truly feel? How can you be sure he won't hesitate again?

This just doesn't make sense at all, and I can not possibly be satisfied with such an illogical response.

I think he's implied that a lot of people were kinda afraid to moderate the OT board once it started getting out of control, for fear of being called any number of names or being piled on. Ironically the labeling of everybody as a trump voter or a nazi sympathizer was rampant there if you disagreed with something.

Is this site gonna become another alt-right haven like 4chan has become? I hope not, but the way some people are talking in this thread...

I don't think so. I assume the new mods will behave in some of the same ways to prevent that kind of cancerous discourse.

Been a member since 2005 but I'm done, I can't support a creep like Evilore. gamergaters can have the ruins of the site don't care

Dude, she literally slept with him afterwards and remained friends for a time. He read some signals wrong while drunk. He fucked up for sure. Nobody was raped or murdered. In a more sane time, both of them would've laughed it off nervously the next day and gone about their life.

If this happened just ten or fifteen or so years ago it woudn't of been a big deal to anyone, to Tyler, to her, and likely most of all the GAF community at large.

But everyone has to be a victim now for social brownie points, so carry on.

For all of the uprising, and all of the internet justice police out there dedicating time towards making this world a better place....i just hope in a court of law, not the public vantage point that everyone has the right guy doing the wrong things.

I come here for the community, not because of Evillore. I dont even know the guy. I do love it here because of all the good and diverse folks who make this place what it is.

I sometimes have to wonder a few things:

1. The presumed assault took place, then later they become a couple?

2. I do not understand those who have to announce they leaving a forum, and in doing so, by conviction, do it with the addage of acting like 12 year olds using curse words, and vile comments. Why?

3. What if in many peoples infinite wisdom of being judge and jury, just for a pause, end up being misinformed in some capacity, and by rare chance this incident ended up meaning many bastardized the wrong person? Will it just be collateral damage, because the person accused doesn't seem to have shown the best judgements in the past? I mean too many woman in the past never spoke up, so every female that does has to be automatically #metoo?

We all need to stand for every woman using the platform of social media, to hear their stories, and to bring stigma out in the open. I just hope that folks don't confuse standing up..also should ....include " justice for all" .

Because of the justice for all, i can stand for the woman who tell their stories, but i can also keep myself in check and ask myself, am i in any position to truly act like the justice system myself?

There are alot of whys here, and alot i don't know, and alot others don't know. Does this mean i absolve? Hell no. Does this mean i am going to disown this forum because of alot of accusations?

I don't think so.

NEOGAF WILL BE FINE!

BECAUSE THE COMMUNITY HERE ARE MADE OF MOSTLY GREAT PEOPLE!

/end topic.

When it comes to all the users who were banned unfairly (ala when the unnamed mod banned hundreds of users without due process and without telling anyone), will there be any kind of appeals process? You'd think NeoGAF would try to address what may be a severe user drain by acknowledging former veteran posters who do want to post here.

See this is just crazy. 1 idiot writes this and you try to condemn a whole website. How the fuck is this logical? Lots of recent OT members were like this. I just don't understand

It's gonna depend on if these losers whining about "sjws" or "male feminists" or about winning a fucking "culture war" are allowed to stick around, now isn't it?

They sure as shit aren't catching a ban right now, in a sea of people catching bans.

Until then, GAF should be considered hot trash in good conscience.

This whole thing is bullshit. You're all setting fire to your accounts out of a false sense of righteousness.

There's no assault here.

He left when she said fuck off.

Really bad time to present yourself. But ok... you hook up weeks later.

This is what you're setting fire to your accounts over.

Get some perspective ya weirdos.

It's hilarious seeing people go ape shit over a total non-story. He misread the situation and made a move. The horror.

The pitchfork wielding mobs of the internet should not be encouraged or given room. It is destructive and unjust behavior. Sexual assault is a real problem and there have been a lot of public cases recently that made this a hot button. Based off of the information we have on this one I lean towards calling it an overreaction. By her own account it wasn't a huge deal, more that she was peer pressured into giving up a sacrificial offering lel.

Tyler was very brave to speak up about his side of the story but you're all throwing it back at his face...

Brave? Yeah taking five days to write a statement is very brave. He knew about the allegations since last Wednesday.

Given his position he had a responsibility to create that statement. All of this was handled very poorly and the community is now in shambles.

As I've said before, I'm not entirely accepting of Evilore's assertions of innocence, but I can't really disregard them either. Sexual assault allegations are almost inherently unreliable--not to say that they're presumptively false. So many do turn out to be false, though. A mere allegation, therefore, is not enough to support a guilty verdict. Unfair, is what that is. Lest we are inclined to become a community of trolls and witch hunters, we should wait. The full accounting of the evidence will come. I hope we have the patient to make it to that point, and I hope that Evilore is vindicated. Such is what I hope, anyway. Evilore has done so much for this community. Very few of us would be here if not for his efforts. I doubt that I would. Lol.

Probably not, not with the mod shortage. They have to figure that out first.

If this thread is anything to go by, it seems like NeoGAF will be infested (or better yet, was already infested) with people that thinks standing against mysoginy, defending LGBT rights and calling out neonazis is considered SJW stuff.

No wonder Trump won the elections and Bolsonaro is heading its way to won in Brazil too. Having empathy became some sort of leftist meltdown, how fucking sad is that?

I think this situation was more than poorly handled.

I have no additional insight into the events but with the allegations in the past and how poor this one was handled, I'm just going to leave and go somewhere else.

It was nice while it lasted and I love a lot of communites and people I met here and hope I get keep in contact with a few of them in some other form.

With that I'm signing out!

Perma ban me pls
I'm glad I've always used adblock now
My gut tells me your full of shit, and it's usually correct
Shit like this is why I don't use the term gamer to describe my hobby

This mob justice behaviour is embarrassing. It's 4chan levels of embarrassing. An allegation has been made, no proof has been delivered and people are losing their minds. It is truly sad.

This, I hope the community returns back to what it once was. I really liked off topic

You'll notice by my post that I haven't touched the EviLore subject at all. His actions in response to this debacle have ruined this community, and not what he may or may not have done with that lady back then.

You won't have a hard time finding discourse usually associated with the alt-right in this thread - stuff that a lot of users have been keeping to themselves in shame for a long time, but now feel safe enough to spit out there. It's dishearthening.

It's crazy how this mirrors real life. Negative behavior by an authority figure is recognized, denied and the accuser is attacked, then those that behave similar to the accusations feel emboldened by the lack of consequences and become more open and vocal...

Glad GAF is back. I was worried when I heard it was down and might never come back.

I stay out of all the drama, rarely go into OT and am here for the gaming discussion. I am glad I am not as invested in this as some people are, because some of these reactions are just crazy...I miss the days when the internet was a place to have fun and not make a huge deal out of every little thing like it personally affects you. The web has just become an anonymous anger outlet where people run their virtual mouth just to feel better about themselves.

Anyway, glad to still have a forum of hardcore gamers who can have a place to come together and discuss our love for for the hobby. I look forward to posting the the Odyssey OT which is almost here!

I'm glad this place is back. It's still my favourite gaming forum, mainly because it's just that - a forum of threads and posts, with none of the needles social media/aggregation hooks of other sites.

That being said, the new management structure raises some concerns and questions which I hope are answered in the near future:

- If moderation is going to be anonymous, how will moderators be held accountable? You will need a process to review moderators and their decisions to ensure the rules are being applied consistently and fairly.

- How on Earth are you going to police political discussion? There are so many ifs and buts and politics reaches so deeply into culture and media that attempting to determine what constitutes a political thread is going to be more trouble than actually moderating it.

He could allow the polite agree to disagree style political discussion and ban the "if you don't agree with me you are a horrible person" style of non-discussion.

lol

He is really delusion enough to think the Winchester plan will work here. It didn't even work in the movie.

Also to the "give him the benefit of the doubt" crowd: this wasn't the first instance of the guy being creepy.

If the whole moderation team that knew him and worked under him didn't give him the benefit of the doubt neither should you.

Hi.

An allegation of sexual misconduct has been made against me by an ex. It's not true, the individual making the accusation isn't credible, the story doesn't reconcile logically with the facts, and there's plenty of evidence and witnesses to corroborate that. It'll be a process.

All allegations of this nature are serious, of course. I first got word of it on Wednesday when a screenshot of a Facebook post was handed to Voat. I immediately talked with my mod team about the contents of the screenshot and clarified that it was baseless and explained some of the details concerning my former associations with her, and tried to ensure any concerns from the team were addressed fully and transparently to everyone's satisfaction. On Thursday I heard that she had deleted the accusation from Facebook, and wasn't entirely sure how to proceed from there or how this would all play out in the public space at that point. Then, Friday morning, the screenshot made its way to NeoGAF and chaos ensued.

I was in the process of writing a statement that entire day to address formally address the allegation, but the community had erupted in a flash that morning. While the moderation team was trying to restore the peace, accusations and threats concerning the screenshot started shifting to them as well by association with me, and I was asked by my team to do something to fix things and get the heat off of all of them at least. I was beyond exhausted by that point, though, stretched too thin in the time since the post had first appeared and seeing unprecedented events unfold on NeoGAF. I was slow and weak. I failed to handle it quickly enough and let the team down. Before I could finish a statement and get it out there, understandably some mods hit their emotional limit, expressed concerns about the community coming after them, and decided to leave. A few people resigned, and many more quickly followed for similar reasons, citing stress and harassment. The site started breaking under load spikes leading up to the first resignations, too, and then flatlined altogether, so issuing a statement at that time on NeoGAF itself became impossible for the time being, and my attention shifted toward the moderation team's future.

Since that whole mess, lasting from Friday morning through Saturday, before we formally went offline for maintenance and repair and restructure, we've just been trying to figure out the best course of action for NeoGAF going forward. And as stories began being published by various outlets, I issued some comments to the press, since everything coming out was proving to be sensationalized, opportunist, and unprofessional.

We've all become increasingly stressed and weary this year in ways even I'm not accustomed to by now, and discussions on heated news, political issues, and social issues on the off-topic side of the site have become areas no one has wanted to moderate in the open for fear of backlash or just general exposure to the inevitable toxicity. I've gone in there myself to take the heat, since it's very much my responsibility to do so before anyone else's, but there's been little headway, mostly just more anger and resentment and a lot of bans. I don't think this necessarily reflects on our community; more so the tone of the entire internet this year with regards to heated issues.

That's all going to inform the way forward for NeoGAF as we refocus on what the main goals are supposed to be for the site. The mod team will talk about more specifics on what that will entail below.

One last thing. The NeoGAF mod team is here for this community; all of you. You have no obligations to respect me or believe anything I say about my personal life one way or another, but if you're going to be here and participate on NeoGAF, respect the mod team by following the rules and behaving. The team is diminished at the moment and the folks who stuck around care very much about this community and its future. Be considerate of them. That's non-negotiable.

Thanks.

how's that woman's pussy? was it good to grab her?

It's hilarious seeing people go ape shit over a total non-story. He misread the situation and made a move. The horror.

It's actually pretty funny when you think about it.

Yeah.he made a collosally shit play.

He backed out when told to. That's what matters. A brutal rape didn't ensue. He misread and left.

It was bold. But failed.

And they hooked up later on... so obviously reestablished a repor.

It's sad how people can't see how fucking ridiculous they sound.

OT should stay dead for a while. Too much toxicity that seeped into the gaming side.

Respect for the owner will never come back for some, to those, goodbye.

There was a lot of good users here in the gaming communities, and that was the only thing that kept me coming back. To them I say thank you for all the good times.

If all the reasonable people leave, then this is goodbye, maybe I'll catch you in some other place.
