To be honest? Every single forum I've been part of during my time on the internet. Granted, most of those were in my native language and for whatever reason, people are way less aggressive there. I was even an s-moderator in a larger one, so I'm pretty familar with what works best and such things.
On the international side, I'm part of TeamLiquid which had and still has stricter moderation. Other forums pretty much died out and one pretty active one I ignore since the community is "meh" (some anime listing site which you may know), so I can't say much about that. There is also a really great forum about IT, finance, business and such. Don't really want to name it here but I can send you a link if you are interested.
Though, one forum that actually is less moderated came to my mind...and that is the GOG forum. Granted, it's not nearly as bad as this place, so it does need less moderation but I'm pretty sure they either have no moderator or it's so rarely moderated that people don't see it.

Sorry, but that style of commenting doesn't really work for me, at all. It's why I stay with "traditional" forums and also why I really appreciate this place, as it is nice, clear and easy to read.

At the moment site just recovered from few days of blackout and boards are mess due to people posting account suicides which discourages posting.

I don't really think Discord does that at the moment but people really need to think about the time when the investors want to have their money back and more. It's losing money right now and isn't sustainable, thus, they will need to think of something when the time comes.

You got your servers on the left, each server can have multiple text and voice channels and you go from there. Its a very nice replacement for Skype, but not for a forum for obvious reasons

I'm not sure where NeoGAF is heading, but I want to see it improve from where it was and currently is. Will I continue to enjoy Neogaf? I want to, I surely do. But there needs to be some level of order. It's too early to tell right now what the future holds.

All of you guys that didn't like the previous moderation had plenty of other places to go. So why didn't you go there? The thing that made GAF special in the first place was the moderation. If you really hated it so much you should have at least turned that energy inward and questioned your own behavior instead of blaming the mods for something you have the power to change. Y'know... being able to question oneself and accept criticism is kind of a cornerstone of living a healthy, happy adult life. Unfortunately EL couldn't manage even the slightest bit of it, so here we are at last.

Without the moderation GAF is no different from many of the other unmoderated spaces on the Internet you could freely participate in. I don't see the point in having yet another space like that when they're a dime a dozen. Go pick one and stick with it. Or, if you really don't like those spaces either, maybe question why that might be the case?

Double post, but I have also experienced this. It was called MSB FTW. Bunch of folks caught bans on GameFaqs and decided to make their own forum: "Madden Social Board."

The "FTW" should give you a clue as to how long ago this was. But it's dead now, because folks are too grown to keep up their teenage antics.

Almost 100% similar to my ban, except mine was on topic.

My response was given due to a post that stated “Fuck white people...” Yes, that was the entire post. Then others went along with it.

I asked why that was okay and that it isn’t right to lump all white people together as racist and such. It was a very tense time, right around the time Trump won.

I got a month long ban for “hand waving”. I can’t 100% be certain of the thread title, but I know it had something to do with police, which I was always in support of BLM in and outside of GAF.

After that ban the poster who wrote “Fuck white people...” was still there and not banned.

I was upset by the ban because I frequented OT daily and my entire post history was very pro minority, stemming from being in a racially diverse family as well as being supportive of many other issues such as gay rights, which I gained from having a transgender sibling and how he was around everyone else growing up began to make so much sense to me as I got older when he finally found the courage to come out and tell the family. It was truly eye opening and made me seriously question how mean I was to him, although I chalked that up to the usual bigger brother (him) and younger brother (me) rivalries.

None of that mattered, because I became nothing but a racial sympathizer that day. The fact that my entire history showed me to be on the same was tossed in the trash.


It basically killed my enthusiasm for OT from that point on. I didn’t know what I could or couldn’t say and honestly felt that unless I just accepted everything people said, I may run the risk of being ousted again on bogus claims.

This is what has been killing me about this whole thing. If you didn't like GAF because it was more left-leaning and it didn't allow certain sorts of opinions, that's fine. You had multiple options. Pretty much every other website will allow the kind of opinions that weren't welcomed in NeoGAF. Why can't we have just this one place for ourselves?

He, Nintendo, and Gamergate all thought that she should be fired. They didn't all take the same path to get there. But that doesn't mean any of those parties endorse any of the others' overall worldview and activities, in any way. This isn't that difficult to grasp.

Yeah why would a place that most of the major gaming news sites tralled for new stories respect this place? Why would a place where tons of tech experts hung around and interacted and helped the community get any respect? Why would a place where sales insiders and experts regaled us with all kinds of info and talked to us as openly as possible gain any respect? Why would a place frequented and talked about by developers from all over the gaming spectrum garner any respect? Why would a place that so many minority communities found as a welcoming home where they could chat and post without the overt harassment faced elsewhere earn any respect? Yeah who would honestly respect this place.

How can gamergate be "right" over something they had no say over? All they did was produce the information to Nintendo. Nintendo has the say on whether or not she should be employed.

Is it right to expose someone as a sex worker with hopes to get them fired? No.

Thanks dragonbane. I only use GAF on my phone at work basically so this may not be ideal for me. Will see what happens if I don't get banned first for my opinion on EvilLore.

Discord's mobile app is actually quite decent but the whole program is focussed around whats happening currently. If you are in a big server its impossible to keep up and can kinda be lost in the conversations
 
Honest question, what do you guys think? With the current light moderation, do you think that this place has turned into an Irish Pub/Russian bar post midnight when everyone has reached the maximum gauge?

Ok, I've mostly posted in this thread the last few days with some lurking and posting on the front page, but besides the cursing kamikaze drama queens and some truely stupid posts I don't see a big difference to what was going on before.

We haven't gone from Lord Hincersby's tea party at Chatéau Bellecock to Mermaid's Inn at the docks is what I'm trying to say....

I don't think that poster is saying NeoGaf was not deserving of respect. I think the poster was laughing at the inability to understand the deep deep hatred a lot of people (either far-right types, previously banned members, etc) have for this place.

Sure gaf is/was/has been deserving of respect for a lot of reasons. But you know how the world works. People are less likely to notice the good, while being more likely to notice the bad. And some of your bullet points have become less true over time. The alt-right type element whipping people into a frenzy didn't help the perception either rightfully or wrongfully. But there were other reasons that not everybody thought gaf was just swell, and they've been well covered in this topic. This is the reality.

My bullet points all stood true until the weekend but feel free to tell me how there weren't sales insiders in NPD related threads or how tech experts didn't flock to OT's like the television one or how minority communities flocked to GAF because it was welcoming and open to them and so on and so forth. To say GAF didn't get respect because the Alt Right whipped people up totally ignores the point that GAF is as huge and popular as it is because it earned the respect of a lot of people who provided a lot of great insight, discourse and content to the site for years and years.

If anything the Alt Right, GG, VOAT and others hating GAF so damn much is because it remained so well known and respected by anyone that hadn't gone down the drain.

A little from column A, a little from column B. There are the assholes that hate gaf because they are assholes. But there are of course the issues with moderation, and toxicity even on the gaming side dogpiling devs and press and etc etc.

That's what I meant about some of the bullet points less true now than in the past... some in the industry were driven away because people could go overboard.

It’s not much different than before.

In fact I expect that after this period of outrage things will return to normal. If people stuck around after those older EL problems, what’s to expect people wont forget and move on this time too?

Those who leave will be replaced with new voices. It’s not as if the site revolved around just those people.

In the past, if you did it very quickly and/or before anyone else posted, it shouldn't show it either. But now it never shows it.

Oh I absolutely agree. There are times where I started reading a thread, wanted to comment, but the amount of dogpiling on terrible comments was a bit too much. I always commented when things started to settle. But thats mostly the gamingside. Some folks could really pursue people and I wasn't interested in those kind of dicussions. I can totally understand people being sick of that.
