The state of NeoGAF

And he can hand over the business to someone else, no?

Thats... not how the world works. That is not what the word "business" means. People should just give up their houses!

I was discussing the situation minus GamerGate, and then after something like 24 hours of being asked in the thread how I can condone someone being fired when some GamerGaters wanted her fired, I said the broken clock bit.

Are we clear? I didn't bring up GamerGate, I don't know anyone involved with it, I really don't have any time for it. That doesn't mean I'm going to take the position opposite of them as a blanket policy, that's ridiculous.

Even bad evil broken clocks would apologise to jholmes here now the CONTEXT is in place, but y'know, that's just how it is these days.

What you call toeing the line I call respecting the TOS. Funny how semantics work.

The moderation of the forum the last few years had nothing to do with the TOS. There were dozens or obnoxious rude assholes here who rarely got banned because they had the protection of their mod buddies. That's the kind of consistency I also expect from the new hellhole that is being advertised here since yesterday by the usual suspects.

You're a very dramatic person. Obviously, he would have to sell it, but you get the point. He would be giving someone else the rights to manage the site. Is this or is it not possible? That's all I'm saying he should do.

Tell me where you're going, I'm not interested in GAF's future or reliving the greatest hits of awful administration at ********.

Yes, someone could do that down the line. The insanity of this week would mean nobody would go near it for a sale and I imagine Mr Malka is in no frame of mind to vet potential buyers either. Most people on the internet don't realise this was a business by the way, so many have unironically said "y he no step down?"

Its a moot point anyway as the most likely buyers have decided to set up their own bouncy castle from scratch down the road and hope to become half as big.

Dunno man. Internet discourse seems like one great big shit for the next decade til the idelogical purists get made fun of on the level of 60's hippies. Maybe one of Button Land's All Stars with the most genders will turn out to be an even bigger paedo and that will underline the whole era nicely.

I'm one of the receipts. Bish banned me on one of his rampages when The Usual Suspects in PoliGaf/BCT must have pm'd him or something(always pathetic when that happened, worst was when the Nintendo lot did it in a Media Create thread) over me using the word "fam". I had just been in there saying the left needed to calm down and plan and not keep threatening allies with punches to the head or "the end of whiteness" or whatever the fuck. Borderline racism lets be honest.

I guess my bizarre ban and many others broke the camels back and I got unbanned a lot faster than expected and Bish slunk off once he couldn't power trip anymore.

Happy to be a part of the de-modding of this forum. They had all collectively become a cancer.

I got banned by him as well about a week after the election. I forgot about that ban; I had previously stated that a ban in early 2016 was my most recent. It was a one month ban, but my account was restored weeks early coinciding with his de-modding. Maybe at one time he was upstanding and rational. But at some point he lost it.

Someone asked how you condone it, you didn't give reasons you just said gamergate can be right sometimes with your broken clock bit. You don't see how that would justify a ban? Not even a permaban, a timeout ban where you can think about what you did.

I received one ban in my time here.

I said that a comment made about white people was a racist comment and questioned why it is allowed on Gaf

3 week ban. For being off topic. But the ban message was very smug imo. "This thread is not about your hurt feelings about reverse racism"

I didn't come back after the ban. Not until Monday when I heard old mods gone. I am willing to give new mods a chance.

Yes I believe it was a BS ban.

So what's the future of this site?

Considering GAF wasn't strictly moderated at all (well, maybe in comparison to places like reddit or 4chan), that doesn't sound too good.
I don't know any forum that was more moderated than NeoGAF. In fact NeoGAF and it's users prided themselves on the strict moderation that was among others culling hate speech.

/r/games is a neat place. There are idiots, just like everywhere, but overall, it's pretty good. Why don't you give it a shot and take a peek?

So what's the future of this site?

I hope that EviLore finds a way to sell or pass the site along. I'll hang around for a bit to see if that happens. If he just digs in his heels and stays put, I'm out. I think lots of people feel that way as well.

Long term, I'm sure NeoGAF will always have its presence, but a lot of pillars of the community have fled. It will never be what it once was.

I admit, I missed it being there but you know what I meant to say. Something like this would usually get its own thread and a decent number of posts.

Yeah, I know. We will see how it develops during the next few days (and especially the weekend). Media Create is continuing at least and Chris may or may not come back. He is waiting until the dust settles to make a decision which is definitely the best thing to do. I'm sure other users feel the same way.

Can you elaborate or post some links? I always thought that aside from other message boards thinking that we were elitists of some sort, that NeoGAF was always kind of respected.

Just go to Reviewtech's recent video on youtube. Listen to the guy, then proceed to the comment section. Ok, I know what we all think about YT like these...

Then there's a big German website (4players.de) with a little but generally alright and well behaved community who seemingly isn't very fond of Gaf either.

Let's not even start with the other sites mentioned...I won't post links to websites that usually get you banned. Just because lazy.

There's plenty of videos on YT right now dealing with NeoGaf. Just type in "NeoGaf down"

The funny thing is: most comments are not adressing the incident but the community.

You're both patently wrong, why is an apology necessary?

Alison Rapp's past as a sex worker was not gamergate's motivation. They had been targeting her before that information even came to light. It was a tool they used to further their harassment campaign against her.

They aren't "right". They just happened upon information they could use to harass her.

It's so scary how you can't see this and think you're being victimized in receiving justified backlash.

I hated the mods chosen by El before but these new mods chosen by the same person will be different. Even if things are even more nebulous on the modding front than before.

Feel free to not join.

Doesn't hurt to hope

Just pointing out the hypocrisy of people complaining about the old mods and how things were unfair and not transparent enough when things are even more nebulous on the modding side and all this because of the fallout from the personal life of the owner.

I don't think it's hypocrisy. I like this place. If it's even a slim chance... it's a chance.

It is though. Things are even less clear on the moderation and this is all because the owner fucked up badly on the response to the scandal which means it could easily happen again if he does something stupid again in his personal life. That doesn't seem like something that stirs hope.

Someone asked how you condone it, you didn't give reasons you just said gamergate can be right sometimes with your broken clock bit. You don't see how that would justify a ban? Not even a permaban, a timeout ban where you can think about what you did.

He condoned it because his opinion on the situation was formed completely independently from anything gamergate said or did. The comment didn't justify a ban. He offered no endorsement of gamergate of any kind.

He just asserted basically that they are right for the wrong reasons in this specific situation, but they are a "broken clock" meaning they are garbage in general.

Completely unjustified ban.

I'm just going to say that I've been on another forum for 12 years that had zero moderation. Compared to GAF that had a much higher rate of moderation.

The unmoderated forum was fun in a way, discussions were more like real life where people took sides and had dramatic arguments. But it drove people away. People didn't get banned, they straight up left because they didn't feel like dealing with the BS anymore. The only people who post there now are because it has now been reduced to about 12 people who consider themselves friends, but the forum will likely never gain a new user ever again. And now that the users aren't just a bunch of teenagers, and have real lives, the forum barely has enough activity to sustain itself. And it used to be one of the biggest Pokemon forums between 2004-2006. The old regulars had favors over new people, and the only soft rule was "don't be a shitposter" and if you were someone the regulars didn't like they would dogpile on you.

Compared to that, GAF had some favoritism, but the community was diverse enough to where people could have small groups of support for each other. I'm not sure where NeoGAF is heading, but I want to see it improve from where it was and currently is. Will I continue to enjoy Neogaf? I want to, I surely do. But there needs to be some level of order. It's too early to tell right now what the future holds.
